PHTAA Living Design：Found Café and Studio is located adjacent to Found Wedding Venue in Soi Nuanchan, Bangkok. While the two venues share the same architectural elements and are visually connected, they are considered separate entities with their own entrances and landscaping to prevent any direct physical connection.
‘Authentic Fake’ is the name given to the design concept. The architects wanted to take an element that they considered ‘fake’ in a Thai context and reuse it creatively and authentically. For this building, various profiles of prefabricated concrete cornices, typically found as part of neoclassical designs, were used as the veneer on the external walls.
Not only is this a rejection of a fake style that is used inappropriately, purely as a status symbol, but by using only inexpensive prefabricated cornices, it gives the design authenticity. The external walls were left white to maximize the effect of shadow lines created by the bas-relief of the cornice profiles, giving dimension and depth to the surface.
The circular plan means the building has no hierarchy of front and back facade and so can be viewed equally from any angle. The studio takes up most of the space inside the 15-metre diameter building, with the café being a smaller segment of the circle. The studio is accessed via a semi-outdoor circular hallway running along the inside of the external wall.
The café has its own connections to the outside: entrance door, window with a view to a prominent banyan tree, and skylight. Arrangement of the café is so that the tables, seats and bench seat run along the inside of the outside wall, with the barista and preparation area as a focus in the middle of the circle’s chord wall. The preparation area is made stage-like with a parallel skylight above the bench, strip-lit mirrored recessed skirting, and two columns- fragments of the forest of columns in the wedding venue- framing the center of the bench.
