Tierra Design (S) Pte Ltd：Parkroyal on Pickering demonstrates how thoughtful architecture integrated with green intervention on a building in a space-starved, dense, urban, downtown neighborhood can help to establish unconventional gardens in the city. Located between the CBD and the districts of Chinatown and facing Hong Lim Park, the sixteen storey building combines both hotel and SOHO tower into an innovative development for the gentrified neighbourhood of Singapore’s older Central Business District. Zoned as a hotel site and a catalyst for development, Parkroyal on Pickering has become a destination for many different people; from hotel guests and office workers to architects, landscape architects and anyone with an interest in landscape design. The building has established itself not only as an anchor for this part of the CBD but also, as a signature piece for green integrated urban architecture. As a landmark for its public housing neighbors to the west the building affirms Singapore’s status in the global context as a biophilic “City in a Garden”.
The design strategy focused on engaging the adjacent park’s mature landscape into the lower portion of the building with open walkways, sky gardens, pool deck and terraces at every fourth level of the mid-rise hotel blocks. By designing these green interventions onto the building, the lushness of Singapore’s tropical green environment can be enjoyed by hotel guests and passersby from the street below. The building’s landscape interventions on many levels of the hotel amount to twice the green area of the site. Extensive palettes of plants were selected with six species of trees, five species of palms, and fifty two species of shrubs.
On the first storey of the building, generous planting runs the length of the hotel’s street frontage. The covered walkway at pedestrian street level runs between tiered water features on one side and lush roadside planting on the other. Calatheas, Hymenocallis lilies and sculptural Plumeria trees line the sides of the glass-covered walkway. The water features, plants and trees impart a sense of respite from the tropical heat while the glass canopy provides shelter from sudden thunderstorms. Within the hotel lobby, vertical planting and a reflection pool continue the green walkways and water features into the interior.
The sky garden great room on the fifth storey is a voluminous green space, protected by the hotel towers above. Open at the sides with its man-made serpentine shaped corbelled ceiling above, this generously vaulted 3-storey volume is planted with shade tolerant plants, plumerias, palms, shrubs and ground cover. Planting cascades over narrow accessible pathways, flows down from the swimming pools area over the garden terraces and man-made “eroded” rock formations in which ferns and bromeliads planted in crevices and ledges.

On the south side of the site facing blocks of public Housing Development Board flats, from every fourth floor, strands of cascading Phyllanthus cochinchinensis enhance the building’s rear elevation. Pouteria obovate and Cyathea latebrosa which are two native tree species were selected and along with Asplenium nidus, Nephrolepsis acutifolia, Phymatosorus scolopendria and Davallia denticulata, Monsteras, Alocacias and Calatheas to further enhance this elevation. At this rear, rising through twelve storeys, a green wall completes the planting system for the external pathways that service guest rooms.

Natural light and fresh air eliminate reliance on air-conditioning for these passageways. The softscapes; augmented by fertilizers are introduced to the harvested rain water as plants cannot rely on natural ecological processes. Rainwater collected from upper floors is gravity fed to irrigate the planters on the lower levels. NEWater or potable water is used for the water features.
The large sky garden terraces overhead cantilever every fourth storey between and in front of the guest rooms; visually merging with the large park across the street. The plan of the buildings accommodates garden ‘shelves’ and is enjoyed from the adjacent guest rooms as well as from the streets below.

The rooftop garden with comfortable indoor and outdoor lounges has unobstructed view of the city. From this vantage point looking down to the “fifth” elevation, the planning concept is clearly demonstrated. The cantilevered terraces display their own personality with gracefully cascading plants. Liberally planted with native and naturalized species of trees, shrubs, palms and ground cover, the flowers and fruit attract native insects to inhabit these gardens in the sky. On the roof, solar cells power lamps for softscape lighting to make the landscaped areas Singapore’s first Zero Energy Sky gardens.
Parkroyal on Pickering is a Recipient of Singapore’s Green Mark Platinum Certification as the first hotel in Singapore to utilize a solar-powered auto-irrigation system that harvests rain and recycled water for plant maintenance.
