MIND STUDIO: Having revisited Tangqian a year after completion, we recorded our observations of the symbiotic relationship between community vitality and the landscape, viewed from a perspective of continued growth. When our design chooses to yield rather than predict, time and nature reveal a creative power beyond imagination—the community’s enduring beauty lies not in resisting the passage of time but in embracing nature’s unfolding narrative. Architecture and forest harmoniously interweave in the rhythm of breath, and the ecological base evolves with nature. We need not master the mountains and forests; they are already present.
Creating a truly healing habitat, we witnessed the quiet power of nature and time in balancing the mountains’ timeless wisdom with the community’s enduring growth.

Narrative: On the Symbiotic Wisdom of this City
Suzhou, a city of a hundred gardens, has been steeped in flowing waters and forested hills for 2500 years. Here, the millennial Suzhou-style mountain and forest aesthetic and the inherited culture of the literati garden quietly flow. Spanning a thousand years, yet the landscapes and ancient sites endure. Time has not passed here but has been deposited as a symbiotic art of landscape and life within the city’s very texture.
Located in Suzhou’s Xiangcheng District, at the unique intersection of “waterside wetlands” and “cultural mountains,” the project depicts the gentle, warm, and culturally rich literary atmosphere of the Jiangnan mountains and forests. But as time moves forward, epics fade with retelling, and ballads sink into the bluestone slabs. The city’s mountain forest remains as verdant as ever. Time has brought the people here a natural and intimate connection with nature, like breathing—a philosophy of living in harmony with nature.

Inspired by this, we envision a different solution for sustainable living—”mountain forest longevity.” Eschewing the typical large-scale residential development’s reliance on repetitive symbols, we embrace the “spirit of the mountain and forest” rather than the “form of the garden.” We transform the inherent love of gardens within the Suzhou character into a tangible, contemporary mountain dwelling lifestyle. We aim to create a self-sustaining, dynamically balanced, and therapeutic community landscape that truly allows “people to dwell within it, while the mountains and forests endure,” vividly continuing through time.

Slow Pace: On the Natural Dwelling and Exploration of this Land
Seclusion in the city, a return to the heart of the mountains and forests. The overall layout appears naturally formed. From the threshold, one leisurely enters the main axis, where the four-season reception courtyards, with their diverse, swaying trees, seamlessly blend, blurring the boundaries between architecture and forest, drawing people in so subtly that they are unaware of being within the mountains.
Walking north along the 130-meter homecoming stream path, one traverses the north-south central axis of the mountain-forest resort. The gaze is immersed in the morning mist of the “water and light forest.” Then it flows into the canopied, undulating, layered forest camping area—the relaxed feeling of mountain living naturally unfolds here like a stream.
Extending 300 meters east-west, the central promenade is immersive for exploring the mountains and forests. Along the way, the Starry Garden offers whispers with the mountain breeze while gazing at the night sky. The Nature Classroom imparts the wisdom of the rainforest to young children. The Children’s Dream Garden, shaded by trees, echoes with joyful laughter. Bathed in the delightful and carefree atmosphere of nature, time in the mountains moves slowly and gently.
Mountain-forest imprints, scattered like stars, are linked along the central axis, with winding paths ultimately leading to the residential gardens of each courtyard. The six private residential courtyards are like islands hidden within a secluded forest, ranging from forest relaxation and neighborhood socializing to outdoor fitness, aromatherapy gardens, edible gardens, and health and wellness spaces. Together, they form a rich field of natural healing energy, showcasing the authenticity of the mountains and forests and the intimate connection with nature.
The overall design is based on a mountain-forest theme, drawing upon the refined essence of Suzhou’s culture to incorporate more mountain living scenery. From the natural immersion of the main axis to the everyday life of the promenade, to the physical and mental healing of the private courtyards, one experiences a progression of emotions: “seclusion-returning to the heart-dwelling.” To live and explore here is not to conquer the mountains and forests. It is to coexist with nature, “unpossessing, untaming, undefended.” The landscape sheds complex elements, leaving space to exquisitely present natural mountain rock and water features. The mountains and forests are inherent; here, mountain living takes tangible form.

Detailed Portrait: On the Enduring Beauty of this Mountain Forest
At the beginning of the design, we considered the possibility of community sustainability, or rather, community longevity. We feared the community aging or, at least, hoped it would age slowly. Community sustainability speaks to the harmonious and lasting symbiotic relationship connecting people to nature and each other. Within this lasting symbiosis, does the passage of time only mean decline and oblivion?
Three years later, returning to this community, we see the design “taking root and sprouting,” “breathing continuously.” Nature and time have done even better than we imagined.
Plants are consistently the most vibrant storytellers in the landscape.
Within the community’s ongoing exploration of “mountain-forest aesthetics,” we focus more on the natural ecological beauty of plant succession over time than on the static ornamental qualities of traditional gardens.
In the four-season courtyards, the “undomesticated” hackberry trees display unique gestures. Mid-story Japanese maples spread their branches, while scouring rush and ferns, following the undulating terrain, intertwine and become increasingly lush in the humid air. Eschewing traditional, manicured horticulture, we emulate the natural succession of vertical communities in mountain forests. With minimal human intervention, we don’t contradict the environment but rather coexist with it.
Within the decentralized, de-emphasized plant communities, hackberry, River birch, Chinese tallow, and other tree species intermingle and alternate, forming a flowing, powerful presence. Intentionally unplanted lawn areas allow air currents, sunlight, and microclimates to flow freely through the gaps. By redesigning the site, we guide the branches to unfold in their most authentic form—a self-contained vitality that requires no embellishment.
“Spring birth, summer lush, autumn color, winter storage”—all living things have their rhythm. Nearly 70% of the district’s trees are deciduous, chosen both for seasonal comfort (warm winters, cool summers) and for their fallen leaves, which enrich the soil and sustain the plant community’s ecological balance. In midsummer, waxberries turn red, and loquats are covered in golden yellow fruit; in late autumn, silvergrass sways with a dry yellow color, yet contains vitality, only waiting for the new green after winter storage; river birch bark naturally peels off with time… These fragments, which are regarded as ‘imperfections’ in a refined context, are the silent narratives of the “mountain- forest’ original power and simple aesthetics in the seasonal rotation of the cycle of life.

Materials depict time’s most touching expressions.
Throughout the project, the material selection has avoided excessive refinement. We did not pursue endless polishing, nor did we envision excessive artificial ornamentation. Instead, we chose materials that could withstand the test of time—natural materials that better dialogue with nature and coexist with the climate, aging beautifully.
The project makes extensive use of native, aged mountain stones, preserving their natural forms and textures: some are firmly embedded in the paths, others stand bare on the mountain ridges by the water’s edge, some are integrated into the walls, blending with the light, and some pave the bottom of the pool, merging with the water. Time will add a more gentle and profound strength to their textures.
Railroad ties, sourced from old railways and embankments, are embedded in the gravel, leaving gaps for walking. Their natural traces of time are not afraid of wear and tear; on the contrary, their rustic and resilient beauty is enhanced by use. This is a power that requires no embellishment, originates from nature, and will eventually return to it.
In the outdoor soft furnishings and touchable spaces, we continue the narrative of approachable materials. Imitation rattan chairs, wooden tables, and rounded stone benches possess a gentle, skin-like touch beneath their weather-resistant frames. This is an honest dialogue between the body and natural materials.
A response with greater cultural warmth is our heartfelt tribute to local intangible cultural heritage. This project is adjacent to the heritage of Suzhou Imperial Kiln Brick. We used modern paving to translate the warm texture and craftsmanship of the golden bricks, embedding them into the site’s surface. This is more than just the use of materials; it is an awakening of local memory—the subtle luster and handcrafted markings that appear after years of deposition are inherited from the Jiangnan cultural context, silently conversing with the past and the present.
At the same time, beneath the irregularities of nature lies the framework of an enduring and classic proportional aesthetic.
Proportion maintains visual balance and emotional tension, creating an aesthetic order of space that is pleasing to the visual, practical, and durable. Truly moving proportions are never limited to precise numbers but lie in the ease and composure of using the space.
Within this mountain-forest context, we use delicate proportions to awaken rhythmic perception, inheriting the Eastern pursuit of “order” and “tranquility.”
Stepping into a relaxed realm: gravel, stepping stones, and wooden platforms, like the twists and turns of a stream, lead towards the depths of natural foliage. The density and sparseness of the plants echo the emotions, while the courtyard borrows from the miniature scale, low-lying enclosure, and lush greenery to surround a calm and peaceful interior.
Place attachment is a deeper symbiotic life community between people and the mountain-forest.
Just as the roots of the mountains and forests are deeply embedded in the earth, enduring beyond seasonal changes, so too are human emotions in a long-inhabited place. Like seeds taking root and spreading, these emotions eventually intertwine with the space and the nourishing mountains and forests, creating an irreplaceable sense of home and belonging. This is the true meaning of “Place Attachment”: people and places, along with the natural life surrounding them, quietly cultivate a deep emotional connection in daily companionship, sharing, and interaction, weaving individuals into a stable community network constructed by land, greenery, and neighborhood.
Therefore, we focused on the intimacy of spatial scale and the relaxed atmosphere of the setting, allowing the mountain forest to become the foundation and companion of our community life. Whether it is the readily available wildness in the ground-level green valleys or the clear atmosphere passing through the forest in the elevated corridors, there are no planned routes, only the authentic footprints left by children chasing fallen leaves and identifying birdsong, connecting shared childhood memories. The boundaries between people and spaces are as gently blurred as the light and shadow in the mountains and forests, creating a shared perception of the rhythm of the mountain-forest and the heartbeat of the community.
Emotions settled over time have not faded over time; instead, bathed in the mountain and forest light and shadow and nurtured by the changing seasons, they’ve grown clearer and warmer, like the annual rings of an ancient tree. These emotions solidify into an individual’s recognition of their home, their love and pride for this mountain forest, and become the deepest and most enduring feeling and belonging of this community.
This is the core of landscape design: to inherit the endowment of the land, to allow the power of the mountains and forests to enrich the community, and to create a living community rooted in nature, where the heart finds peace, and where emotions are connected.
Retrospective: Seeing More Possibilities for this Community
With a self-critical and constantly inquisitive attitude towards the current community environment, we believe that a more beautiful living environment should not be an empty promise with a limited validity period. Design needs to truly see the houses nearby, the connection with nature, and the return to the people. Construction has ended, but this mountain forest has taught us even more.
Learning the “imperfect” eternity from the mountains and forests, we see that a truly sustainable community should be like a native forest—seemingly mixed yet secretly containing a precise order, where even the seasonally withered silvergrass and exposed, weathered rock formations are part of the system’s resilience. Eternity is not in frozen perfection but in the natural wisdom of continuous adaptation. This mountain forest has ultimately taught us how to participate in an eternal dialogue as temporary beings. Someday, the “enduring beauty” of the mountains and forests will allow us to no longer worry about the community growing old.
The wisdom of waiting for a mountain forest to turn green is perhaps the scarcest spiritual resource in our era of quick success and instant gratification. When various “instant” landscapes are popular, ignoring and disrespecting the vicinity and time, we need to rediscover the power of slowness. This is not a rejection of efficiency but a respect for ecological order, a trust in the power of time’s depth, and a safeguarding of the thickness of design’s life. When we humbly read the land and explore truly sustainable community practices, we finally see that the mountains and forests are already here.
