TUNG DESIGN:Depth, Labyrinth, Infinity
“Depth and meandering” and “cyclical infinity” were the premeditated intent and esoteric essence in the design of Nine Flower Garden · Wall Street Work Valley Corporate Club, and they also constitute the core spatial aesthetic and the fundamental technique of spatial composition. By means of meandering paths and interpenetrating spaces, the concealment and revelation of volumes, circulation routes that envelop functions, layered superimposition, and the careful guidance of sightlines, the design generates—within a limited area—a psychological and visual experience of boundless depth, ceaseless cyclical infinity, and ever-shifting scenery with every step. This approach deliberately avoids revealing everything at a single glance, instead cultivating a restrained emotional progression akin to “mountains beyond mountains, waters beyond waters, then shadowy willows and bright blossoms.”
“Taking meandering as beauty, concealment as depth, and circularity as infinity”—within the confines of this residential garden, such principles prolong the perception of time, expand the experience of space, intensify spatial layering, and create a sustained sense of suspense. In so doing, the design attains the pinnacle of Eastern residential aesthetics: “a forested mountain within a foot’s span, manifold exquisite views, and a resonance that lingers far beyond the spoken word.”

Preface to the Residential Garden
The club is situated atop the Wall Street Work Valley office tower in Nanning. It is an integrated renovation project encompassing architecture, landscape, and interior design. The renovation spans two floors plus the rooftop level, building upon the existing fabric of interlaced beams and columns, light wells, and gridded spaces. By incorporating the design concept of the “Nine Palaces and Flying Stars,” each room opens onto a courtyard, each chamber embraces a garden, and the scenery shifts with every step. In this way, an elevated private club is created that embodies the seamless integration of residence and garden—a true aerial residential garden.
“Upon first setting foot on the site and looking up at the sky, I saw the great beams intersecting against the blue like a nine-palace grid, and in that instant it was as if I beheld the nine stars of the vast cosmos. Thus arose the visionary idea of nine scenes and nine courtyards. The layout originates from the concept of the ‘Nine Palaces and Flying Stars,’ also known as the Nine Curved Stars. This was the starting point of Nine Flower Garden.
Our original design intent was simple: ‘Place the house in the garden, and give every space its own courtyard.’ There had to be a shared realm where the family could gather together, as well as a secluded corner for drinking alone while gazing at the clouds. The courtyards not only channel natural ventilation in response to the southern climate, but also allow ‘qi’ to circulate throughout the spaces—this is the ‘qi flow’ of life, and it also embodies the dweller’s tranquil and unhurried state of mind.” — Pang Meifu, Lead Designer
The design takes “people” as its foundation and “returning to nature” as its guiding principle in shaping the space, breaking down the boundaries between architecture and the indoor and outdoor settings to achieve a deep interaction between people and nature. The first consideration is the layering of circulation: from the entrance to the interior of the club, narrow lanes and expansive courtyards alternate, creating an immersive garden-strolling atmosphere. The second is the management of sightlines: small spaces borrow views and employ window openings to create a sense of expansiveness, where one can observe courtyard greenery from indoors and gaze into the distant skyline from the courtyards, allowing transparency to draw in the scenery. The design uses the interplay of old and new materials to build layers: textured solid wood and handcrafted ceramics are paired with modern metal and glass, while the raw, rough beams and columns are complemented by soft furnishings. There is no deliberate effort to unify the styles—only a pursuit of sensory harmony.

Tea Room Terrace Landscape Area
The design illuminates the water court with light, draws nature into the tea room, and merges modern architectural materials with Eastern landscaping techniques within the ambience of night. A shallow water feature paired with a stone spring ornament creates a dynamic play of water, softening the hard architectural edges. Ground lights and garden lights are orchestrated to produce layered illumination, with warm light and interior lighting interpenetrating through the glass grilles. Bamboo, plantain, and other greenery are planted in tiers, forming rich strata of light and shadow under the glow of the lamps.
The interior employs an open, transparent design to maximize the influx of natural daylight, seamlessly connecting with the outdoor terrace landscape. The terrace area, with its native greenery and understated paving, forms a semi-open leisure space that functions as a buffer zone mediating between indoors and outdoors. Here, the enjoyment of tea and the appreciation of scenery merge into one, while all clamour is kept at bay.
In the passage landscape area leading to the tea room, the design technique of “a scene at every step” is adopted. Through layered vegetation and the shifting interplay of light and shadow, an immersive walking experience is created, gently guiding visitors into the serene atmosphere of the tea room.
The design fosters a symbiosis between architecture and nature. Glass skylights and metal grilles channel daylight to weave layers of light and shadow. Bamboo, plantain, and other greenery are carefully placed alongside water features and rocks to craft miniature courtyards, softening the hard boundaries of the building. Corridors link the functional zones, enabling the permeation and fusion of hard architecture with soft landscape, and giving rise to a three-dimensional garden experience of ever-shifting scenery with every step.
Atrium Landscape Area
Here, an elevated courtyard merges modern architecture with Chinese landscaping. The rigid geometry of fair-faced concrete serves as the skeleton, while dark brown solid wood columns and metal mesh grilles interweave to create permeable layers of partition. Within the courtyard, water is channeled into a pond, its surface reflecting the skylight. Plantain, ferns, and other greenery grow in an artfully staggered arrangement, softening the cold, hard texture of the architecture. A suspended glass skylight allows natural light to slant inward, casting an interplay of light and shadow upon the concrete walls, wooden columns, and water feature. In this way, the traditional Chinese garden ideal of “a winding path leading to tranquil seclusion” merges with the openness and transparency of modern architecture, crafting an elevated natural sanctuary that offers serenity amidst the urban bustle.
As a transitional space from the public circulation to the core atrium, the elevator lobby is designed with two core principles: “a modern translation of natural textures” and “spatial guidance through a narrative of light and shadow.” It achieves a seamless transition from the hard architectural interface to the softened natural courtyard, serving as a highly ceremonial “prelude” within the entire spatial sequence.
The design employs a rattan-woven curved surface as the primary finish for the ceiling and walls. The warm, gentle texture of natural rattan weaving neutralizes the cold, hard qualities of the elevator’s metal panels and concrete structure, echoing, through traditional craftsmanship, the Chinese garden aesthetic core of “overcoming hardness with softness.” Metal square grilles are used for spatial definition; their transparent geometric lines create a contrast of rigidity and softness with the organic texture of the rattan, enabling a dialogue between modern design and traditional craft. At the same time, the grilles are integrated with indirect lighting to evoke the Eastern poetic imagery of “shadows filtering through the lattice.” The dynamic light and shadow not only enrich the visual layering but also prelude the design motif of the atrium landscape.

The Courtyard Atrium
The sense of enclosure and transparency characteristic of the Chinese courtyard is translated into the interior. Through the fusion of structure, light and shadow, water features, and circulation, an immersive space imbued with Eastern poetic resonance is created.
A fair-faced concrete framework establishes the atrium’s foundation. An array of rugged old timber columns replaces the traditional wooden colonnade, with concrete and timber interlacing and interlocking to enable a dialogue between modern structure and traditional timber aesthetics. A suspended skylight and side windows channel daylight inward; light refracted through the framework and grilles generates dynamic shadow play, recreating the traditional courtyard’s atmospheric light of “morning radiance and evening shade.”
A mirror-like water surface is employed for “borrowed scenery,” making the indoor garden appear more expansive. At the ends of corridors, “focal views” are arranged—such as a small water feature or a stone lantern—ensuring that every step brings the quiet delight of “scenery shifting with every step.” This approach of compositional restraint, of leaving space for the imagination, prevents the space from feeling crowded and leaves room for reverie.
Flowing water is introduced into the atrium to form a meandering water landscape. The water surface reflects the skylight and timber columns, while the sound of water dissolves any sense of spatial oppression, echoing the Chinese technique of “creating scenery by the water.” The wooden colonnade and the atrium are laid out in an interwoven pattern, producing a spatial layering that is “separated yet uninterrupted.” The circulation follows the rhythm of a Chinese courtyard’s “qi-cheng-zhuan-he” (opening, development, transition, and conclusion), transforming a walk indoors into a garden-strolling experience where each shift in position yields a new view.
The lounge balances daily relaxation with reception functions. A light well design brings overhead daylight into the space, making the public area feel more open and bright. Eastern garden-making techniques are translated into concrete spatial strategies, balancing the practicality of hosting guests with an immersive environmental experience. A full-height glass curtain wall draws the outdoor bamboo grove scenery inside, while an angled skylight captures natural daylight; light and shadow intermingle with warm recessed downlights to create layered illumination.
In the seating area, a solid wood tea table and leather sofas are placed to suit social needs. Wooden lattice partitions separate the lounge from the corridor, ensuring privacy while preserving a sense of transparency. Aged timber paneling on the walls and original calligraphy pieces enrich the details, and the corridor connects to the atrium, extending the circulation toward the natural landscape. Thus, practical function and Eastern aesthetics are seamlessly fused.
The dining room employs old timber columns and metal grilles to define its spatial enclosure. Large expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass replace conventional walls, allowing sightlines to penetrate through to the water feature and greenery in the atrium. Solid wood dining tables and chairs carry forward the timber texture, while the concrete ceiling is rendered with stark minimalism. In the atrium, a shallow water feature and miniature landscaped greenery are created; the arrangement of rocks, moss, and plantain evokes a Chinese Zen-like serenity, separating the spaces while preserving visual permeability.
A corridor, topped with timber beams and paved with stone, links the dining room with the atrium, forming a circulation path of “ever-shifting scenery with every step.” Warm recessed lighting interweaves with natural daylight, enveloping the dining scene in light, shadow, and verdant green, and allowing diners to become immersed in the aesthetic ambience of an Eastern garden.
Calligraphic Inscriptions for the Garden Owner
“Distant Mountains Enfolded in Verdure” (远山含翠)
Taking landscape as the embodiment of the “Dao,” this inscription draws upon the ethereal remoteness of “distant mountains” and the veiled vitality of “enfolded verdure” to create an Eastern artistic conception in which “the void holds substance, and a foot’s span stretches a thousand miles.” It subtly echoes Laozi’s realm of “great beauty beyond words,” Confucius’s metaphorical character of “the benevolent find joy in mountains,” and Tao Yuanming’s poetic dwelling of “the self and the world both forgotten.” Ultimately, it attains the spatial realm of “seeing the grand in the small, and the unity of heaven and humanity.”
The “Hua” (华) in “Jiuhua” (Nine Flower Garden)
The character “Hua,” meaning “flower” in “Jiuhua,” is drawn from the line “brilliant are its blossoms” (*zhuozhuo qi hua*) in the *Book of Songs*, signifying the radiant vitality of life in full bloom. It also embraces the Confucian self-cultivation ideal of “spring flowers and autumn fruits,” as well as the Daoist life aesthetic of “great skill appearing as simplicity” and “returning to original purity.” Thus, it symbolizes a dual abundance of both the material and the spiritual. The spatial imagery further integrates Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist thought.
“Hill and Mountain” (丘山) & “Above the Bamboo” (竹上)
These two inscriptions draw upon the Confucian, Buddhist, and Daoist paths of self-cultivation and family regulation. One represents “striving upward with earnest effort,” while the other embodies “bending downward with a seeming non-action, gentle and humble.” Within them reside the Confucian spirit of inclusiveness and the virtues of gentleness, goodness, respect, frugality, and deference; the Buddhist ideal of “non-action and non-contention”; and the Daoist principle of “taking in accordance with nature.”
The topmost roof level is crafted into an open, unobstructed viewing space, serving as the “crowning touch” of the project. The design maximizes the advantage of the panoramic vantage point, adopting a minimalist layout complemented by a scattering of leisure amenities to infuse the space with a sense of nature.
Suite Common Area Landscape
The suite is positioned as a “private residential sanctuary,” with a square, open layout and a complete array of functional zones, placing equal emphasis on living comfort and privacy. A palette of warm, tactile materials and soft hues creates an intimate and refined domestic atmosphere.
The interior landscape is conceived around the concept of “private enjoyment of nature.” Native greenery, minimalist footpaths, and carefully sited water features are employed to shape a richly layered natural realm. Seamlessly integrated with the living quarters, it becomes the occupant’s exclusive outdoor retreat—accommodating a stroll, a view, or a small gathering—and weaves nature into the fabric of everyday life.
Landscape Details
The most enchanting moments of **Nine Flower Garden** reside within its light and shadow. No elaborate lighting scheme is deployed; instead, “light” itself is made the protagonist—natural light is borrowed by day and supplemented with warm light by night, allowing light and shadow to become the “fourth dimension” of the space. During the day, sunlight pours through the light well into the courtyard, setting the shadows of trees dancing upon the ground. Indoors, blinds slice the light into ribbons that fall across walls and furnishings, shifting gradually with the passage of time. In the evening, the courtyard’s string lights begin to glow, their warm radiance illuminating the foliage, while the glass reflects the interior lamps, dissolving the boundary between inside and out.
From a barren rooftop to an elevated club where residence and garden form a seamless whole, every step of **Nine Flower Garden** has been an answer to the question: “How, within the city, can we create a corner to rest the soul?” The answer, perhaps, lies in the quiet delight of “a room with its own courtyard,” in the dialogue between light, shadow, and greenery, and in the philosophy of living that seeks a **return to original purity …
