华南理工大学建筑设计研究院：华南理工大学，直属教育部的全国重点大学，位列国家“双一流”、“211工程”、“985工程”，“建筑老八校”之一，是中国南方的重要学府。华南理工大学南门周边环境整治工程即落位于华工五山校区南方正门，以原校园中轴始端——南门广场为中心，延伸至五山地铁站，途径3 个主要出入口，全长约3 公里，是华工形象的重要展示窗口。

Architecture Design & Research Institute, South China University Of Technology：South China University of Technology (SCUT) is a prestigious National Key University directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and is widely recognized as a leading institution of higher education in Southern China. SCUT has achieved impressive distinctions, including being designated a “Double First Class University,” a participant in “Project 211” and “Project 985,” and one of the “Eight Old Schools of Architecture” (referring to 8 schools that established Architecture majors earliest in the history of the People’s Republic of China). The Landscape Improvement Project at South China University of Technology’s South Gate Area is situated at the southern entrance of SCUT’s Wushan Campus. It serves as the focal point of the initial campus central axis starting at the South Gate Square, extending all the way to Wushan Metro Station, and encompasses 3 main exits to the school, covering a distance of approximately 3 kilometers. This project plays a vital role in projecting the image of SCUT, and holds great significance for the university.

1934年，国立中山大学石牌校区业已奠基，南门石牌始建。此后近一个世纪，学校几经变更，1952年华南工学院于此成立，1988年更名华南理工大学。2004年，位于番禺区的大学城校区建成投入使用；2019年，广州国际校区在番禺区创新城南岸拉开华南理工大学新征程的序幕。

百年沧桑，云烟过往。恰逢华南理工大学组建70周年暨建校105年校庆，云山珠水承平日久，南国学府亦是桃李成林。然而，五山校区南端校门及其周边作为这所华南名校的第一门面，经年维护不佳，又反复修整，设施老化，界面凌乱，其风貌亟待改造。

In 1934, the groundbreaking ceremony of the Shipai Campus and the construction of the memorial archway at the South Gate marked the start of National Sun Yat-sen University. Over the course of nearly a century, the university has undergone significant transformations. In 1952, South China University of Engineering was established at the same location and was later renamed South China University of Technology in 1988. The completion and utilization of the SCUT Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center Campus in Panyu District, Guangzhou in 2004 marked another milestone in the university’s history. In 2019, the construction of the Guangzhou International Campus, located on the south bank of Innovation Hub in Panyu, ushered in a new chapter in the development of SCUT.

As SCUT approaches the 70th anniversary of its reestablishment and 105th anniversary of its founding, it is clear that despite a century of change, Baiyun Mountain and Zhujiang River remain tranquil while this university in Southern China has flourished with countless accomplished students. However, as the prominent gateway to this esteemed institution, the South Gate of the Wushan Campus and its surrounding areas have suffered from years of inadequate maintenance and frequent repairs. These facilities have become outdated, and the appearance has fallen into disarray, leading to the area being in dire need of a makeover.

一、现状问题Current state and existing problem

1、形象不显 Not fully reflecting SCUT’s image

作为华南理工大学校园的形象窗口，目前的华工南门前广场区域维护不佳，界面破碎，经历多次翻修设计元素杂乱，植物长势亦不甚良好，缺少了大学校园的气质，其景观具有较大的提升空间。

2、功能不足 Functional insufficiencies

项目沿路多有出入口，除校园形象展示之外，也是师生日常活动的要道，进出校园，穿越校园及家属区、体育场馆等重要校园场所，以至于校外人士入校，皆需要往来此处。但是现状缺少聚集休憩空间，校门及校铭石的合影区，与一些非机动车的停放空间。

3、交通不畅 Traffic congestion

现状设计道路破损、交通混乱，车行及步行系统分流不理想，校园入口性引导也比较弱。

As a critical representation of the SCUT campus, the current state of the South Gate Square is suboptimal and has not been maintained well. After multiple renovations, the design elements lack uniformity, and the condition of the vegetation is disappointing. As a result, the South Gate fails to embody the image of this distinguished university campus. There is ample room for improvement in terms of landscaping, which would greatly enhance the visual appeal of this important gateway.

The project area encompasses several entrances to the campus that are accessible from various roads. In addition to presenting the university’s image, the South Gate also serves as a primary thoroughfare for students and teachers for their daily activities. It facilitates access to the campus, family areas, sports venues, and other significant amenities, even for those entering from outside the campus. Regrettably, the current area is inadequate for recreational and social activities. Moreover, it lacks the space needed for group photos at the school gate with the school inscription stone, as well as parking spaces for non-motorized vehicles.

The current roads in the project area exhibit signs of wear and tear. Traffic is chaotic, and the system of separating vehicles and pedestrians is suboptimal. Convenient access to the campus entrance is inhibited by the current state of the area’s environment.

二、设计策略Design Strategy

1.百年学道树大学门户形象

为了做好校园第一面的设计，设计团队研究学习了大量国内外历史校园空间，借鉴其对城市开放的中央校园主景，取“百年学道”之意，打造自然大气的疏林草坪学道场景，将华工的校园时空记录化作景观节点设计的元素。同时选取考究的造景材质，以匹配原有校铭石及校门的设计风格，营造沉淀的历史感。在植栽设计上，完全保留了场地原有的乔木作为校园记忆，结合易维护的新增灌木地被，营造了舒适自然的植物空间。

2.脉络通达理交通承启之合

华工南门及其周边区域，城市道路斜穿而过，人、车流量极大。新设计在并行的路段腾挪绿化空间，在不影响现状树的前提下以绿化隔离，防止人车混行，以实现良好的校园步行体验。

在步行沿线还布设有休憩和慢行的花林空间，以及规范集中的校园非机动车停放位置。对于道路进一步拓宽，以缓冲绿化带实现人车分流，也有助于缓解交通的紧张局面。

3.开放兼容塑城市开放空间

场地空间设计不仅提升校园形象需求，而且同时满足了周边居民的多种使用场景需求：集合休憩，慢行，参观打卡，校史宣传等功能。成为了周边居民津津乐道的地方。

1.”The Hundred-Year Academic Corridor” – embodying the school’s century-long legacy

To achieve a well-designed “facade” for the campus, the design team conducted extensive research on campus design cases both domestically and internationally. Drawing inspiration from central campus landscapes that offer openness to the city, the team created a natural and expansive scenic pathway known as “The Hundred-Year Academic Corridor”. We transformed the history of the campus into tangible design elements and integrated them as nodes in the landscape design. The team also carefully selected materials that match the style of the original school inscription stone and gate to create a sense of historical depth. In terms of planting design, the original arbor trees on site were completely preserved to serve as a reminder of campus memories, while easy-to-maintain shrubs were added to create a comfortable and natural plant space.

2.Optimize transportation flow through purposeful design

In the SCUT South Gate vicinity, urban roads intersect diagonally, with a large amount of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The new design reallocates green space on adjacent road sections, using landscaping as a barrier to separate pedestrians from vehicles while preserving existing trees, enhancing the overall walking experience on campus.

The new design includes designated recreational and viewing areas that are adorned with lush flowers and trees. Additionally, we have allocated dedicated parking spaces for non-motorized vehicles on campus, allowing for the possibility of widening the roads and creating a green space buffer between pedestrians and vehicles to alleviate the current traffic congestion.

3.Create an inclusive space open to the city

The design of the space not only satisfies the requirement of improving the campus image, but also meets the various needs of the surrounding neighborhood for different uses such as social interaction, walking, sight-seeing and photo-taking, promoting the school’s history, and more. The site has become a popular spot among local residents.

三、节点展示Features to Showcase

1、知新园——学无止境，常知常新Zhixin Garden – Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

知新园，即原南门正广场。此处是华南理工大学主入口与校铭石所在，华工学子入学与毕业时大多会在这里留影纪念。知新园景观次第有序，将各景观要素的远近高低仔细推敲，最终形成一校三区水景广场——校铭石——孙中山先生像的校园门户画像。新设计以此中轴展示华园发展历史，讲述华工故事。

Zhixin Garden, previously known as South Gate Square, serves as the main entrance of SCUT and is home to the school inscription stone. It is a frequently visited spot for SCUT students to take commemorative graduation and enrollment photos. The landscape of Zhixin Garden is meticulously designed, taking into consideration the distance, height, and arrangement of each landscape element. As a result, it has become a stunning campus gateway featuring a water feature plaza, the school inscription stone, and a statue of Sun Yat-sen. The new design of Zhixin Garden aims to showcase the developmental history of SCUT along this central axis, effectively telling the story of this university.

2、学子林——莘莘学子，烂漫年华Knowledge Oasis Garden: a place to nurture the blooming youth

学子林依托现有的校园林木重新添加穿插步行路径，改造原来密而不达的绿化空间，改造成为一片写意浪漫的休憩和慢行空间，深受师生喜爱。

Knowledge Oasis Garden was created by preserving the existing trees and integrating meandering walking paths to transform the previously dense and inaccessible green space into a picturesque and romantic leisurely walking area. This rejuvenated space has become a highly sought-after spot for both teachers and students.

3、学思岛——慎思明理，笃行道远Enlightenment Circle – the unity of knowledge and action leads to success

学思岛位于华工东门与华工附属幼儿园附近，是交通要道。为疏解紧张的交通矛盾，在这里做了道路的拓宽并规范了沿路机动车的停车区。环岛缩小，改用简约现代的表达语言，增加非机动车停车区及家长等候休憩林下空间，加大了东门入口的开敞感及形象性。

Enlightenment Circle is a roundabout located near the East Gate of SCUT and its affiliated kindergarten, serving as a key transportation hub. To alleviate traffic congestion, the road was widened and the parking areas for motor vehicles were standardized. The roundabout was reduced in size and updated with simple and modern design language. Additional non-motorized vehicle parking areas and shaded spaces for waiting parents were added, creating a more open and welcoming entrance at the East Gate.
