WTD: Throughout history and across cultures, ideal living environments have largely been inseparable from gardens. Classical European gardens pursue grandeur and order, while Eastern gardens excel at revealing the vast within the small, embodying the principle that “though created by human hands, they seem as if nature itself had fashioned them.” A small garden can embrace the beauty of the four seasons; a patch of hill and a few stones can encapsulate the vastness of mountains and rivers stretching for ten thousand li. We might as well borrow the garden-design magic of our ancestors for use in contemporary residential landscapes. Floating walkways, suspended eaves, winding paths leading to secluded spots, and water features that unfold in three cascading tiers… In the blink of an eye, the universe reveals itself—and this time, that universe is imbued with a touch of the future.

Located alongside Tianfu 5th Street, a major urban thoroughfare in Chengdu’s Dayuan district, the G29 Yuan Island residential complex stands quietly on this site. The site consists of a 16-mu northern plot and a 13-mu southern plot, totaling 29 mu. The two plots are divided by a municipal road, leaving the north and south isolated from one another; the building line runs right up to the roadside, limiting the depth available for landscaping; The southern section is narrow and cramped, with available space severely constrained; while the northern section appears slightly more spacious, the majority of its floor area is occupied by mandatory fire lanes, evacuation stairwells, and various mechanical and electrical equipment enclosures, leaving only a few scattered patches of land for landscaping. It resembles a patchwork of fragmented corners carved out by urban infrastructure, presenting the designers with a formidable challenge.

When there is limited room for creativity in the horizontal plane, the vertical plane may offer new opportunities for innovation. GAD, the lead architectural design firm, drew inspiration from a series of vertically rising “floating island” oases, incorporating soft, flowing curves extensively into the exterior facades and moving away from rigid, straight walls. The landscape design extends the architectural concept, using “floating islands” to soften the rigid, heavy boundaries of the site and alleviate the oppressive feeling of the urban interface; at the same time, it creates an “ark garden”—a hidden oasis in the heart of the city—within the scattered, narrow gaps of the site.

“Anti-Gravity” and “Anti-Perspective”—A Grand Vision in a Small Garden

Towering buildings and vast areas of shadow inevitably make residents feel oppressed. Therefore, the landscape design employs various techniques to create a series of “floating islands.” Their irregular forms and continuous textures—extending from vertical facades to horizontal planes—break through existing boundaries and conventional visual relationships of gravity and perspective. By shedding the heavy, grounded sensation, all landscape elements appear to “float,” This approach minimizes the sense of oppression and confinement created by walls and structures. Furthermore, through the layered combination of plantings, water features, and architectural elements, the design creates rich visual perspectives and an intimate sense of scale, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the joy of “a mustard seed containing Mount Sumeru; the universe within a single square inch.”

The designers deliberately expanded the area of the central water features in both the north and south plots; the water features account for approximately 5.9% of the north plot and 11% of the south plot, with a total water feature area of nearly 2,000 square meters. The reflections on the water act like a giant lens; the shimmering ripples blur the boundaries between vertical and horizontal planes, softening the harsh contours of the buildings and perimeter walls. Moreover, they significantly extend the depth of the originally cramped courtyards, and the gentle lapping of the water carries the essence of nature into every corner of the site. More importantly, an invisible bond lies hidden beneath the water: the courtyard on the lower ground floor connects the north and south plots through the water feature, reuniting the fragmented spaces into a single whole beneath the ground.

The northern section features a wide, unbroken expanse of water, while the southern section unfolds along one side of the narrow, elongated terrain. In the center of the two water features, 18 floating flower beds of varying heights rise from the water, resembling flying disc-shaped islands soaring from the ground. The shortest of these “flying discs” stands 2.4 meters above the ground, while the tallest reaches 10.45 meters; some flower beds even rise above the perimeter wall, allowing passersby on the street to catch glimpses of clusters of suspended greenery. Constructed with a cantilevered braced structure and featuring a curved base, some even conceal cascading waterfalls within, their gentle murmur barely audible. Slender columns support the heavy flower platforms, from which plants cascade downward, instinctively drawing the viewer’s gaze upward—thus gradually dispelling the sense of weight in the space and transforming the entire courtyard into a light, airy environment. This is precisely the “Ark Illusion” the designer sought to create: a vision that is both of the present and of the future.

The designer transformed the large ventilation shafts and mechanical enclosures along the edge of the water feature—which were originally an eyesore—into streamlined sculptures by encasing them in parametric grilles. The curves of the grilles resemble layered ripples on water, turning these utilitarian elements into artistic installations within the water courtyard. The fire lane also abandons the conventional straight-line paving in favor of an irregular, interlocking border of alternating black and white, using subtle shifts in detail to break up the monotony of the large expanse of hard surface.

A World Within a Small Space: A Grand Ecosystem in a Tiny Habitat
The narrow green belt between municipal roads and buildings has very limited depth, making it difficult to create a striking, eye-catching focal point. Here, the designers employed bold and ingenious thinking, placing a giant ecological rainforest tank at each of the north and south entrances to the site. In the city center, where real estate is at a premium, these “viewable microhabitats” create a new public experience for passersby. The ever-changing habitats, which never grow tiresome, provide residents with endless topics for conversation and a nature education classroom right on their doorstep.

Both ecological tanks are over 12 meters long and over 5 meters tall, housing more than 100 species of plants. In terms of both scale and plant diversity, this marks a first for residential projects in Chengdu. The North Tank is a celebration of life, with hanging vines缠绕ing South American rhododendrons, while water-storing bromeliads and air plants cling to their surfaces. Against a backdrop of layered broad-leaved foliage plants—all vying to reach toward the light for photosynthesis—the vibrant colors are striking yet not chaotic, resembling a magnified cross-section of a tropical rainforest. The theme of the South Tank is “New Life from Dead Wood.” The visual focal point is a section of ancient, decaying wood, from whose crevices moss, green cloud grass, and ferns are sprouting anew—a display of the vitality of a plant community reviving through the dead wood.

This is a complete, self-contained miniature ecosystem: a fully enclosed glass dome isolates it from the external environment, while inside, independent misting, sprinkler, and constant-temperature lighting systems work together to maintain stable temperature and humidity levels within the tank. Interestingly, the ecological tanks also house living organisms—birds, tree frogs, turtles, snails, and scavenger fish are arranged in distinct layers within each tank. Each tank features 4–6 primary display species, complemented by several “service species” (the cleanup crew). These organisms are active at different times across the upper, middle, and lower layers, completing the material cycle through the decomposition of microorganisms and fallen leaves. They rely almost entirely on non-predatory interactions to achieve a micro-self-sustaining cycle within this independent system.

The narrow, elongated entryway lacks depth in its greenery, so the ecological tank uses vertical, three-dimensional landscaping to replace flat, spread-out plants. In this small, enclosed slice of nature, the tank resembles a forest, with vines twining around branches and the water’s reflection gently rippling. Together, the plants and small animals create a vibrant, visually appealing, and therapeutic atmosphere at the entrance—a scene that immediately captures the eye. The entrance is no longer merely a passageway to be hurriedly traversed, but rather a miniature ecosystem where one can pause, meditate, and find healing. Hundreds of species of plants, animals, birds, and insects showcase the complex ecosystem with which we coexist on this planet. Through these two sets of endlessly fascinating ecological tanks, we hope to convey to residents not only the vibrant vitality of life, but also a deep sense of humanistic care and an ecological philosophy that cherishes nature.

The planting design echoes the ecological aquarium, using a diverse array of distinctive plants from around the world to create an “Ark Fantasy” brimming with freshness.

In a bold design choice, the architect made extensive use of dragon blood trees standing nearly 3 meters tall—a species with a unique form and a strong tropical presence that is typically used only as an accent, yet here serves as the primary structural framework of the landscaping, quickly establishing a striking tropical visual tone. The water feature area is interspersed with Chinese hackberry, Chinese tallow trees, and gracefully twisted winterberry shrubs, whose spreading canopies provide upper-level greenery and year-round color; In the human-scale flower beds, Australian rice flowers, large-leaved eupatorium, bird’s-nest ferns, asparagus fern, and panda violets soften the hard edges, while the occasional large-leaved calla lilies and monstera add a touch of rustic charm.

The floating discs, arranged at varying heights, feature distinct landscaping schemes. The lower discs—within 2 meters and close enough for people to touch—are planted with live greenery, facilitating daily pruning, drainage, and maintenance; the higher discs above 2 meters and the columns in the mezzanine level incorporate long-lasting, cascading artificial vertical greenery, balancing the visual impact of the landscape with long-term maintenance costs. Through this blend of real and artificial elements, greenery extends from the ground all the way up into the air, making the entire island appear as if it were wrapped in layer upon layer of vegetation, creating a vibrant and fantastical garden landscape.

A landscape corridor has been established on both the north and south plots; like two light, flowing ribbons, they connect the core pedestrian routes. The pergola structures are light and airy, with parametric grilles that echo the curves of rippling water, while the canopy floats above the plots like drifting white clouds. Sunlight filters through the latticework, casting delicate patches of light onto the ground; walking beneath them, one feels as though time itself has slowed. The play of light and shadow evokes the poetic charm of a traditional garden.

In addition to creating an all-weather scenic corridor for residents, its light and airy design incorporates traditional garden techniques such as framed views, visual alignments, and winding paths leading to secluded spots, skillfully weaving together the beginning, development, transition, and conclusion of the landscape scenes. In open sections, the corridor fully opens up, bringing the mirror-like water feature and floating islands fully into view; in narrower sections, it narrows appropriately to block out cluttered or undesirable views and direct the gaze toward a clear focal point. The corridor and the scenery on either side echo one another: at times, the flow is as smooth as flowing clouds and water, allowing for a pleasant stroll; at other times, it resembles stationary clouds, inviting visitors to pause and admire the view. Light and greenery filter through the slats of the latticework, while light and shadow dance across the walking surface. Through this interplay of openness and intimacy, the design creates rich visual layers and a sense of movement within a limited space—alternating between walking and pausing, blurring the line between reality and illusion; whether walking or standing still, one is always exploring the garden.

The sky bridge also connects the elevated levels of the four buildings. These “gray spaces,” which were once easily overlooked, now incorporate activities popular among young residents—such as yoga, reading, light exercise, and socializing—becoming an extension of community life. Vertical green walls, suspended plants, and ground-level greenery converge here; whether meditating or gazing into the distance, the joy of being surrounded by such abundant greenery is always deeply healing.

In the design of Chengdu Yuan Island, we created a hidden paradise within a limited plot through landscape design, using the lightness of “floating” to counteract gravity and the tranquility of “concealed” habitats to soothe the clamor. While the architecture reaches toward the sky with a vertical posture, the landscape reweaves nature through an interplay of horizontal and vertical elements. We deconstructed traditional spatial elements to reveal the big picture through the small; we layered common landscape elements within the design, handling the weighty with ease; we used connecting walkways to link three-dimensional circulation paths and spaces both inside and out, creating a balance between the tangible and the intangible; and through rich plantings and an “ecological tank” with exceptionally high information density, we opened up boundless imagination within a limited garden. In this contemporary residential community nestled in the heart of the city, we have realized a garden ideal where “a small landscape conceals vast hills and valleys, and the universe is revealed in every glance.”
