SWA Group:A 3.7-acre parking lot in downtown Dallas opened to the public recently as the city’s newest urban neighborhood park. Funded by Parks for Downtown Dallas, Pacific Plaza is the first of four new green spaces the nonprofit expects to help open in the city’s core by the end of 2022.

From a singular function to diverse program spaces: Central lawn, Generous play area, Allées of trees and shaded paths, Dog-walking zones, Space for food trucks, Open-air pavilion.

Design Highlight One: Using “Thread” to connect each landscape zone, achieving coexistence of independence and unity

The park’s unifying element is “The Thread,” a solid, 611-foot-long Indiana limestone seat wall, which lazily traverses the entire plaza. This sinuous, sculptural form, offers shaded, semi-shaded, and full-sun seating, and unifies the park into a cohesive whole.

“A thread is a thing that can tie disparate things together,” says Chuck McDaniel, who led the design team for the Dallas office of the landscape architecture firm SWA, referring to the park’s signature element, as a gathering point for the city. “It reaches out and says, ‘Welcome Dallas’.”

Design Highlight Two: every corner of the park provides 100% accessibility

All parts of the park are accessible and navigable by pathways and paving.

Design Highlight Three: Connection between the past and the present using subtle details

The Pacific Railway once traveled through the site of what is now a lawn of Pacific Plaza. The plaza’s iconic pavilion, designed by HKS Architect’s Line Studio, gives a nod to this history, through the use of perforated metal in a pattern that is Morse Code for all the stops along the Pacific Railway from New Orleans to El Paso.

Design Highlight four: respect all living things, including our furry friends

This urban neighborhood park is designed for the people who live, work and play in the city core — and welcomes their dogs. Special irrigated “convenience” areas with fragrant plants and durable materials are located strategically as along the park’s edge to attract dogs.

Design Highlight Five: ensure generous quantity of shade, creating a place for Dallas citizens to escape the heat

SWA’s design expanded the urban canopy at Pacific Plaza. In the dense heat of a Dallas summer, shade is imperative to the success and accessibility of a public space and for mitigating the effects of the urban heat island.

The 27 mature live oak trees contained in the once adjacent Aston Grove were preserved and integrated into SWA’s design through the closure of an existing road that separated the grove from the park. In addition to the existing grove, SWA designed Harwood Promenade an allee of Lacebark Elm trees providing shade along the north edge of the park and a variety of newly planted tree coverage extends across the park.

Plant space on one side of the park

Design Highlight 6: Practical and artistic installation design conveys the poetry in life

Seeing Red at Pacific Plaza? Actually, the color is Flambé Orange. This eye catching color has a special role at as a visual guide to relaxation, recreation and beauty. Visitors can quickly identify these bright bistro tables and chairs by #LandscapeForms gently scattered throughout the park recalling spring wildflowers like Indian paintbrush or California poppies across a meadow.

Scattered practical art installations and casual seating

Design Highlight Seven: The open non-powered recreation area designed to provide safe and free recreation services for citizens of all ages

Custom-designed play structures introduce color to encourage active play. Similarly colored plantings abound in the park. Ribbons of red flowers pick up on the color of sight furnishing, highlighting the scene and flowing along the meandering paths, attracting human visitors as well as local insects and birds.

Dynamic unpowered recreation space

Play at Pacific Plaza is multi-generational. An expansive central lawn totaling more than an acre offers opportunities for passive and active recreation.

Diverse use of lawn space

Design Highlight Eight: Light the park gently at night, extend the service of public space

Lights at Pacific Plaza come to life at night, taking on a shape of their own. Custom lighting is integrated into the park’s sculptural elements to illuminate areas for safety and play. Bollards and structural lighting set off paths, walls and canopy supporting the park’s accessibility from day into evening.

Safe and comfortable night view of the park

Thoughtful design for shade, lighting, seating, multi-generational programming and even dogs make this a park for the people, all year, day or evening. Placemaking comes to life in layers of color, form, and texture at Pacific Plaza. What was once a lifeless parking lot is now a vibrant urban park for visitors and residents alike.
