Atelier Pierre Thibault:

Atelier Pierre Thibault: The residence of Brome Lake is located on a relatively small lot facing the eponymous lake, in an area characterized by opulent two-story houses. The challenge was therefore to orient the house towards the sublime panorama of the lake without compromising the privacy of the occupants. The chosen strategy was to create a single story project unfolding into two wings linked by a majestic glass connexion. Composed of wood and stone walls, the Lac-Brome residence relies on the durability and nobility of natural materials in order to integrate in a refined, elegant and yet modest way into its environment.

At key moments, dazzling visual openings cross the house to project the gaze into the lake. Conversely, in the master suite, an inner garden encircles a tree, decontextualizing it like an object of art. Just like a museum tour would do it , the house unveils, emphasizes, accentuates or isolates elements of the surrounding landscape with accuracy and sensitivity.

The significant involvement of clients early in the project made it possible to carry out programmatic and space studies ensuring that all areas are optimized, both from the point of view of their surface area, their use and there relative position to each other.

In order to maximize contact with the outside, the two wings were linked by the glass connexion. By imprinting inflections on these two wings, private outdoor spaces have emerged while maximizing the supply of natural light in every rooms. From the outside, this volumetric composition preserves the human scale of the project. Thanks to a clever play of solid parts in the walls, the vis-à-vis between the different spaces are avoided while opening all spaces to the views onto the interior courtyard.

The Lac-Brome residence shines with its refinement, which is gradually revealed to the trained observer. For example, the chopped and angled roof is supported by a solid timber structure. The space left between this roof and the walls gives an impression of floating and lightness to the whole. Well anchored to the ground, the masonry walls surprise for their part thanks to their hidden mortar joint. The freestone that composes them, used both inside and outside like the structure of the roof, is defining a unified whole and further blurring the boundaries between domestic spaces and the landscape. The color chosen for the wood interior coating is rich, achieving a harmonious balance in the perceived amplitude of the space: this dark color on the ceiling and the wooden windows allows to give a cozy atmosphere to the interior rooms while interacting with the color of the tree trunks surrounding the house.

The diversity of outdoor spaces allows their use regardless of weather conditions and seasons. Thus, the screen room annexed to the living space benefits from an outdoor fireplace to prolong the cool evenings, the covered outdoor terraces are drawn around the entire perimeter of the house so as to extend the spaces towards the different points of view, while the summer kitchen, inground pool, outdoor shower and uncovered terraces allow you to make the most of long summer days.

The Lac-Brome residence can be summarizes in some key architectural principles that have guided the team during the design : visual openings, open plan, interior-exterior continuity, sobriety of materials, importance given to the outdoor spaces layout, simplicity of spatial organization and intelligibility of the design idea. This project is a convinving proof that with these basic principles, an infinite number of configurations and spatial qualities can be achieved in order to meet very precise needs and desires of the client.
