FISH : Entering searches for ‘Dreamcore Park’ into RED, China’s most trending social media platform, reveals numerous posts promoting a newly opened public space in the Suzhou River cultural leisure zone. Shanghai Super Tube, the little community ‘pocket park’ was originally designed for solving daily traffic crossing inconvenience under the main road bridge Caoyang, has successfully reactivated and attracted people all around the city with its bold and bright design. Its suprised popularity among younger community is a testament to its success, despite only opening in January. This landscape project presented in a proof has the power to shape people’s daily lives and revive significant historical memories. Now, as a result, people of all ages are increasingly visiting and enjoying social interactions within this newly defined landscape.

Origin

The project site is located at the intersection of two main roads on the east side of Changning District in the centre of Shanghai. It is situated in the space underneath the main traffic road bridge Cao Yang. The project site is intended to serve as the first regeneration node of the recreational and cultural belt under the bridge along the Suzhou River in the Changing District, and as a gateway to the junction of the three major districts of Shanghai: Changing, Jing’an, and Putuo.

The updated Caoyang Road under the bridge

This site, although serving as a gateway to three districts, is located on the outskirts and overshadowed by a bridge, making it highly inconspicuous. The current situation includes abandoned shift houses enclosed by walls and a sanitation collection situation. There are several apparent problems on-site: 1) low spatial recognition. The clearance height under the bridge is low, creating depressing and lacking highlights. 2)The sanitation collection station occupies the sidewalks, forcing pedestrians to mingle with cars, resulting in poor walking experience and safety hazards;3) Inside the site, there are stairs, pipelines, traffic signs, railings, and other elements that are not coordinated with each other; 4) It is difficult for people to push their bikes up and down through the steep slopes, which is quite strenuous.

Site status

Considering factors such as citizen safety, daily traffic, and community life. Changning District Construction and Management Committee has decided to hire us to renovate and design this site. They expected to improve the Changning district communities and optimize the slow-paced life for citizens of all ages in Shanghai by focusing on “Strengthening historical education, promoting cultural propaganda, and providing high-quality recreational leisure activities.”

Site design

The design confidently combines the themes of ‘pipeline’ and ‘colour’.

The numerous industrial pipes symbolize the rich industrial heritage of Suzhou Creek and Shanghai, while also evoking the factory life of Shanghai’s Suzhou Creek community. The linear geometric texture of the pipes and the bright colours in the design pay homage to the timeless classic ‘Memphis style’. We are confident that this style represents an attitude of imagination, unconventionality, optimism and fearlessness that can inspire a post-pandemic society with a slow economy and a low sense of morality. The design effectively transforms the wall into a unique gateway display space by activating the grey space with vibrant graffiti. Given the limited number of commercial convenience stores in the area and the location’s importance for daily commuting, residents have frequently urged the government to provide more convenience stores in the neighbourhood.

Design analysis

We repurposed several previously used industrial pipes to create a range of equipment for the site. This included a large teeter-totter, which has proven to be very popular with adults. We also decorated the site with steel pipe wraps in festive colours for added security and a touch of holiday cheer.

The project aimed to depart from conventional natural approach and instead incorporate ‘pipes’, a industrial heritage, as a pervasive design vocabulary throughout the site. The pipes serve both a functional and sculptural purpose, paying homage to Shanghai’s industrial history, including storage tanks, paint cans, beer barrels, and mints.

Art installation

Beer keg installation

To enhance the creativity and playability of the site, FISH ART LAB designed a lot of joyful interactive installations.

The Shanghai Brewery Company was established in 1911. It was the largest and earliest brewing company in the Far East.

The most significant barrel installation on the site reflects this history, abstracting the beer brewing machine into a more cartoonish and geometric work of art. The installation’s colour comes from the beer and its wheat ingredients. Two tubes extend from the barrel, one of which carries an LED screen that plays a looped animation of the industrial history of the SUZHOU River, allowing visitors to contemplate the long industrial history alongside their tour of the site.

Coin Minting Benches

Located on the banks of the SUZHOU River, the century-old Shanghai Mint has witnessed the changes and developments of China’s modern monetary system and the industrial civilisation of the SUZHOU River. In 1919, the Shanghai financial sector implemented the “Abolish Silver Currency, Use Silver Dollar” policy to standardise the weight and fineness of coins. The coin minting factory was completed in 1922, and the first coin was minted on 1 March 1933.

The forged resin seats, “coin mint benches” in the site, abstracted the silver dollars produced by the factory, allowing people to inadvertently feel this history while taking a rest. LED lighting inside the benches creates a fascinating industrial sculpture at night.

Storage tank

The FuFeng Flour Mill was completed on Shanghai Putuo Moganshan Rd and started producing flour in August 1900. It was the first automatic flour mill established by the Chinese national capital. The Qing Dynasty approved its flour as tax-free and distributed it nationwide. “FuFeng Machine Manufacturing Flour CO., Ltd was established to run the business simultaneously.

Three large white tubes at the south-east corner of the site greet pedestrians as they pass, looking like sentinels. They reflect FuFeng’s flour storage and redevelopment. The top of the tube has a 90-degree bend. LED screens in the opening of the tube display animation of walking people, animals and vehicles in a mosaic style, bringing relaxation and humour to pedestrians.

Teeterboard

We placed two sculptural teeterboards in the centre of the site to enhance its interactivity in a discreet way. As an activity installation with a high level of safety and no age restriction, the teeterboards add to the playful vitality of the site.

Extra bit

To enhance the site’s details, we merged the text with the graffiti art. This includes Shanghainese slang, the Project’s logo, Changning, and Putuo’s ID code. The manufacturer’s name and the original factory slogan are also included. The design of the text caters to the young generation’s selfie needs, creating various possibilities for poses.

Upon close inspection, one can observe distinctive patterns on the ground. These patterns are creative nodes formed by rearranging and overlaying English letters and the names ‘SHANGHAI’, ‘SUZHOU RIVER’, and ‘INDUSTRY’, resembling imprints on the ground.

The commercial song ‘Reasons to Love Shanghai’ by Libo Beer, which includes the lyrics ‘Shanghai is where I grew up and became……

An adult, carrying all my emotions, the first toast, the first love, in the eternal innocence… ‘, is a nostalgic melody for many Shanghainese. The purpose of placing this lyric on the wall is to evoke memories of Shanghai’s industrial history and to promote a positive perception of the city in the new era.
