DAGA Architects: We wanted to turn our yard into a forest, so we sprinkled acorns all over it. ——MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO

DAGA Architects’ new project, TOTORO Village, Chaoyang MIX Island, is a complex space that combines a multi-modal business model with cafe attributes, located in a small courtyard on the side of the East Fourth Ring Road in Beijing. At the beginning of the design, considering the special location factors of Jintai Road, this time we create a village style “utopia” hidden in the city.

Different from the interior design of ordinary cafes, TOTORO Village has transformed the courtyard house into an enclosed space accessible through the entrance semi-low stone wall. From the outside, only a small part of the store can be seen as a wilderness. Bounded by the stone wall at the entrance, and with a very different tone inside and outside the space, TOTORO Village retains the green landscape of the original site and continues the original texture of the land, from renovation to new construction, the team and workers work together to complete the project.

The team deconstructed the original antique part of the building, removing all the lightweight partitions inside the house. Some unplaned coarse tree trunks, suspended with nodules, are joined by special steel embeddings at both ends with the sidewalls of the concrete walls to form a rustic and sturdy beam structure. Small wooden house, like building blocks, are placed in the forest. This time, nature is not an addition to the building. Let flowers become flowers and trees become trees.

In the space of 400 square meters, five emerging Beijing local brands — D.A.O Coffee, YEKER DAO, LANG DINER , BEIPING GELATO and TiaohaiPub — are gathered together to form a spatial community. In this time, the business model of cafes in the future will be more towards the form of diversified and complex commercial space. For us, the renovation of TOTORO Village is not only focused on the renewal of the business format within the project, but also on the formation of a business dialogue within the block to promote the value of the whole area.

In this case, the design is not only important to the form but also the choice of construction materials. We choose natural materials to make the materials and the building structure more natural and coherent chimera. Using these building materials, the designer imagines what might happen in the site, creating Spaces by imagining how people might meet, interact and respond to the surrounding landscape.

Under the influence of the description of the small village where “TOTORO” lives in the animation of Ghibli, we do not want the building itself to have too much influence on the natural environment and the experience of guests. We eliminate the metal devices commonly used in modern technology, and only use simple modeling and durable structural system to build the building. These wood finishes enhance the casual nature of the space, and in order to visually extend the outdoor cobblestone floor to the interior, the cabin steps are covered with terrazzo floors with the same cobblestone pattern. The soft background light directs guests’ views from the comfort of the cabin to the distant landscape.

In a city, cafes are a way to renew areas and a place to connect new communities. When the objects displayed in the space are resonated with the emotions, memory brings people closer to each other invisibly. We wanted to break away from the traditional cafe character and plan the area with a more relaxed and laid-back layout.

The color of the different wood contrasts harmoniously with the texture and white of the columns, walls, ceilings and metal wine cabinets. The wooden shelves inside the bar house coffee beans, vintage wine and other sundries. High Windows on the west side of the room bathe the space in natural light. The wild growth of landscape plants can be seen everywhere, subtly dividing the original unobstructed space, forming a more changeable coffee experience space. It gives a new visual focus to the original rules of the building and inspires the guests to explore the curiosity.

We want to keep the Totoro bus that never comes back, the color temperature of the sunset every day. In order to have a good view of the interior space, the team studied the way the train Windows are opened. The passenger seating area is bathed in gradual sunlight. We laid large Windows and opened glass doors and Windows to maximize the visual effect between the interior and the exterior, while also introducing sufficient indoor light.

The cobblestone courtyard is the center of gravity of the whole design, a harmonious transition between architecture and nature. It creates an “inner -outdoor space” : the sun shines on the wooden door panels and is reflected softly into the courtyard. From here, you descend to the final part of the spatial sequence, an open courtyard. The intimate atmosphere of the interior gradually opens up here, creating a free dialogue with nature.

The existing form of the building looks like a contrast to the surrounding field, but at the same time the enclosed space allows visitors to reflect on their feelings from the perspective of people and people and nature. The atmosphere of the place is the core element of the design. We not only wanted to create a memorable space, but also to inspire a new understanding of the cafe.
