Thank Grey space Architects for authorizing the publication of the project on mooool, Text description provided by Grey space Architects.
Grey space Architects :Yimeng Mountain House has been completed and operated for up to five years. Upon completion, Greyspace Architects hadn’t thought about “publicity”, and by now it hasn’t sorted out the process of project design and construction. As the second project after the establishment of Greyspace, it’s also a quality guest house built early in the mountainous area of Yimeng, having profound influence on the development of local guest house and studios. Therefore, we sort it out and have a review on the National Day Holiday.

Yimeng Mountain House is located in Lee-Family Stone Village at the foot of Guimeng Peak, Mengshan Mountains, which is the second highest peak in Shandong. The village was constructed near the mountains and rivers along Jinxian River Valley. About five kilometers in depth from north to south. Due to inconvenience of transportation, most local residents choose the local resources, taking stones in the mountains as the walls, and hays as ceilings to construct a stone house that is warm in winter and cool in summer. The stone houses of every household have formed the unique texture and quality of the village.

Initial impression of the site
Upon arriving at the spot after receiving the design task, the scenes here are very touching: the quiet and beautiful valley, quiet village, scattering stone houses and simple folks of Mengshan Mountains, everything is so natural, as if they have been living here since ancient times.
Mountain View against the Site
Landscape of Jinxian River Valley
However, like most remote villages, hollowness is also an issue here. Youngsters have moved to cities, and most of the residents here are old people. Many stone houses are long neglected and in disrepair. They are in ruins or idle. The five courtyards in Yimeng Mountain House are the renewal and renovation of such stone houses.
Status-quo of the Site
What shape should the construction take in the village? How to have rich and significant dialogue with the environment? How should the environment take the construction? How to create and stimulate the energy of the spot? These are the several questions reflected on facing the site.

Follow the site layout
The Previous state of Yimeng Mountain House is a cow shed and five traditional courtyards constructed along the mountains. The cow shed and No.1 Courtyard are next to the main road. On its south side is a traditional stone house; No.2, No.3 and No.4 courtyards are located right behind, while No.5 Courtyard is around 30m from the main road. It’s relatively independent.
Plan
Based on the original intention of following the original layout of the village, only minor adjustments were made to the house dimensions to accommodate the comfort of the rooms in the five courtyards that were renovated or newly built. The original size of each courtyard is kept in its original form.

The cow shed is higher than the main road, between No.1 Courtyard and the ancient stone guest houses on the south. Behind it are No.2, No.3 and No.4 Courtyards with slightly high terrain in parallel. They are the “hub” of the courtyards. The specific location endows them with specific functions: On the roof of Reception Center is a shared activity platform, and the other five courtyards are all guest houses.

Buildings hidden in village
There is no deliberate “online popular” designs on the appearance of the architecture. Instead, there is micro-transformation based on the land use conditions, functions and needs of courtyards, and local construction workmanship and materials, in hopes that the buildings can integrate and hide in the village afterwards.

View of the Guest houses from across the River
The design strategy of “micro-renovation” was adopted for the five B&B courtyards: courtyards No. 1 and No. 5, which are in good condition, were renovated and upgraded on the basis of preservation; the other three courtyards were demolished but rebuilt on the basis of the original layout due to their old and dilapidated condition.
Entrance to No.3 Courtyard
Boulder strips, a commonest local material, are used for the outer walls of the reconstructed houses, while the roof is pitched, just like that of buildings in surrounding villages. The only thing that was done was to make French window by enlarging the hole appropriately to meet the requirement of view and light for the guest room.
Rooftop Veranda of the Reception Hall
Reception Center and Service Pavilion the rooftop are new masses located at the original cow shed. While trying to integrate with the topography, the original trees of the site and rooftop are reserved. The new walls of the structure are made from cast-in-place concrete. Although it is a more modern volume inserted throughout the site, the color and simplicity of the stone and its appearance are consistent with the surrounding buildings.

Low tech construction strategy
The local cost of building in the project budget and the low technology of local workers have determined that the project can’t be designed and constructed with regular strategies. The following strategies are adopted with the limitation of low cost of building and low technology.

No.3 Courtyard
Choose “cheap” local materials: The main construction materials include boulder strips, pebbles, crushed stones, red bricks, timber and traditional waterstone, all of which are common construction materials for local residents with low price.
Entrance to No.2 Courtyard
Referring to local way of residential construction: Except the Reception Center is made from cast-in-place concrete, the construction of the remaining courtyards refers to the local style of construction, with basic structure made from common stone materials, while lintels of the door, windows and the entrance to the cave prefabricated with cast-in-place concrete, and the rooftop structure made from wooden Y-shaped beam, a common material of guest house.

Construction of lintels at the Entrance of the Courtyard
The civil engineering effect upon completion is the interior space effect: The outer walls are made from boulder strips, while there are three kinds of interior effect inside the walls: pebbles, red bricks and coating. Corresponding to the three techniques of constructing wall structures: boulder strips+ pebbles, boulder strips+brick walls without plastering, and boulder strips+common brick walls+coating; the surface is polished with fine aggregate concrete; while the ceiling is naked wood boards lining Y-shaped beam structure.

Of current construction practice, village is an important scenario. It has become an important part of practices and design innovation on the ground to select local materials and refer to smart local means of construction on the basis of a good understanding of local natural condition and the rural context. People try to extend it into a series of multi-angle and multi-layered construction actions and social activities, so as to sustainably participate in the transformation of rural environment and development of rural economy, thereby prompting the transformation of rural industry and cultural revitalization.

后记 Postscript
While running Yimeng Mountain House, huge changes have taken place in Lee-Family Stone Village: soaring rent of homestead, spontaneous establishment of guest houses, and entry and exit of investors… No matter how the surface changes, Lee-Family Stone Village doesn’t seem to have changed a lot. Maybe such is the natural tolerance of villages, and the unchanged nature of people in Yimeng. But one point goes beyond doubt: Retaining aboriginals and empowering them through industries, instead of making a new start, are critical to rural development. Only by doing so can the unique charm of villages be stimulated sustainably.
