Aofan Landcape: In 2023, we met Zhangjiagarden Campus of Bashu Secondary School and began transforming the first neglected corner on its grounds. With limited space, tight budgets, and numerous surrounding constraints—it was precisely such a project that ignited our excitement and creativity: How could we breathe new life into a forgotten space?

The Struggle to Weave Literature into the Fabric of Campus Life

The first focal point is located at the southeastern corner of the campus, serving as an essential passage for students heading to the cafeteria. Though the site covers less than a thousand square meters, it presented a complex web of spatial relationships and multiple challenges to resolve. Crafting a graceful solution to all these issues became a truly formidable test.

The current state of the site reveals several prominent challenges:

1、The school grounds share a wall with the adjacent residential building, which is aged and lined with exposed utility pipes.2、A foundational retaining wall left from the old residential building straddles the center of the site and cannot be altered./3、The existing stair retaining walls, formed by elevation changes, are worn and outdated in appearance.4、The ground paving is severely damaged.5、An old banyan tree on-site must be preserved, requiring thoughtful integration into the design.

Cultural Gallery

As the essential passage to the cafeteria, the node must first meet the rigid need for “efficient flow”: the original elevation changes and circulation paths are retained with minimal alteration, with only the ground paving updated. Along the shared wall with the residential building, we added a textured red-brick landscape wall that provides both sound insulation and visual harmony with the campus’s main red-brick structures. At eye level along the wall, a continuous cultural display panel is embedded to highlight the school’s history and culture, softly illuminated by narrow-beam spotlights from above, while a low bench at the base offers a place to pause briefly. This approach simultaneously fulfills the needs of circulation efficiency, interface enhancement, and cultural immersion.

Reading Garden

The preserved banyan tree stands in harmonious dialogue with the cultural feature wall. We embraced the old tree within a terraced structure, layered like a “seal” that gently steps upward and inward, creating platforms at varied heights. Here, students can read or play under the canopy, allowing this weathered, towering tree to shelter the growth of the young.

Leisure Promenade

We fully utilized the platform space adjacent to the playground, incorporating an outdoor bar counter and adding a shaded timber canopy to create a tree-shaded reading corner. At the same time, to address the exposed foundation left by the building structure, we redesigned the platform on the office building side, integrating elongated wooden benches and sleek wooden planters. Together with the newly added tree pits, these elements form a serene shaded promenade for leisure and relaxation.

Issues Identified in the Neglected Corner

The second node is located along the narrow, elongated marginal space on the north side of the campus adjacent to Huafu Road. The conditions here are relatively complex, requiring both the utilization of open areas and the thoughtful treatment of the elevation-changing retaining walls.

The current state of the site presents several distinct challenges:

1、The green belt between the teaching building platform and the fence is barren, lacking vegetation, resulting in mud accumulation during rain and dust in dry weather.2、The courtyard space within the teaching building area is underutilized and lies idle.3、The exposed concrete surface of the opposing retaining wall is visually unappealing and lacks aesthetic quality.4、The site is generally disorganized and poses certain safety hazards.

Turning Garden

As a transitional zone between the teaching building and the residential complex, the platform is first designed to meet the flexible need for “breathing space between classes.” We seamlessly connect the tree pits to the platform level, allowing gentle grassy steps to descend softly. The outer edge functions as seating, while the inner perimeter forms a subtle green fence, simultaneously activating both the passageway and the marginal spaces.

Terrace Story Theater

The “intentional void” enclosed within the teaching building courtyard is designed to respond to the need for relaxation during “the ten-minute break.” We preserved the original terrace elevation, applying only a “soft sculpting” approach: three low walls gently segment the level changes into staggered seating steps, naturally forming a sunken mini-amphitheater. The adjacent tall retaining wall required no additional structure—instead, a continuous planting bed was placed at its base, allowing foliage to climb organically. Students can step directly into this space, where short breaks and nature immersion are seamlessly fused.

Beneath the Ancient Boughs: Capturing the Echo of Time

The third node is located on the northwest side of the campus. This area is a key zone for the school’s demolition and reconstruction, surrounded by dense residential buildings that are closely connected to the school grounds, making the redevelopment process particularly challenging and the on-site conditions highly complex.

The site slopes from south to north with a total elevation difference of 15 meters, including a retaining wall height variation of approximately 3 meters. The boundary walls are inconsistent in height and style, functionally weak, and the corner spaces are underutilized. Additionally, hazards such as exposed electrical wires, metal frames on walls, and uneven ground surfaces pose safety risks.

Timeless Garden Promenade

The site’s existing large trees continue to deepen their roots, while a unified low red-brick wall runs along the perimeter to enclose the space. Multi-layered open bookshelves are built into the inner side of the wall, where books are displayed outdoors—freely accessible and returnable anytime. The ground is softly defined by white, ring-like curves, resembling unfurled manuscript paper that gathers shade, words, and footsteps into one serene scene. The “Tree Canopy Book Bar” feels like an open-air, barrier-free study room beneath the trees that never closes.

Time Steps Theater

Responding to the original elevation changes, we rhythmically structured the steps: every three stairs expands into a wide, gentle landing, transforming the slope into a cascading curved amphitheater that naturally draws the gaze inward. The corner of the red-brick wall is reinterpreted as a “breathable” interactive educational wall—its recessed modules and open lattice frames make knowledge visible, tangible, and accessible, like exhibits on display. Along the base of the wall, a wooden platform extends, naturally forming a small stage facing the greenery, allowing the amphitheater, planting beds, and stage to interlock seamlessly through the elevation shifts. Students can sit with their backs to the foliage, turning a ten-minute break into the start of an impromptu performance.

Time Garden Gallery

Following the arc of the “tree-ring” paving, the garden unfolds like a ribbon stretched through time—light and winding. On either side, the undulating micro-terrain and layered progression of flowers and foliage gently guide the eye toward the far end, where an outdoor bar counter composed of red perforated panels leans against the wall. Light passes through the perforations, forming dots that dance like a silent, rhythmic pulse.

Conclusion

By translating the elevation changes into a stepped amphitheater and folding the boundary walls into cultural display surfaces, we have transformed the “leftover space” into a complete, time-shared campus interface through minimal intervention. The five functional scenes—circulation, exhibition, reading, performance, and rest—seamlessly shift along the same pathway. Materials render memory tangible, lighting makes time palpable, and planting lets the seasons be read. Rather than occupying space, the facilities activate it, turning the ten-minute break, the half-hour lunch respite, and the twilight quarter-hour into bookable micro events—like a curtain quietly rising on campus life.

Design Reflections

As a campus with a nearly seventy-year history, the passage of time has left it dotted with “neglected spaces” in need of renewal… Through approaches such as enlivening spaces through culture and function, we have reshaped boundaries and reactivated these areas. By implementing small-scale, low-cost micro-interventions, we have transformed once cramped, outdated, underused, and functionally obsolete spaces into vibrant places—turning them into attractive micro-gardens where teachers and students can pause, linger, and unwind between classes.
