FON STUDIO: The project is located on the rural outskirts of Beijing, nestled between gentle mountains and the Chaobai River corridor, the birthplace of the “Legend of the Zao Shen” (The Kitchen God, who oversees the food of every household). Here, fields and culture converge, with the land absorbing deep-rooted heritage over time.

The design blends the culinary culture of “Zao” (an ancient cooking device made of earth and stone) with the vitality of the farm, creating a multifunctional space that integrates dining, agricultural experiences, and family interactions. The goal is to redefine the relationship of “from land to table” and reshape the connection between people, land, and food.
The design draws inspiration from agriculture and cooking. Fon Studio, with the client, envisioned a tranquil countryside scene. The forty-acre farmland and glass greenhouse form the project’s foundation, with layouts and functions gradually unfolding.

Irregular “circular forms” are integrated into the entrance, planting areas, and outdoor dining spaces. As the seasons change, lush plants soften geometric boundaries, creating a modernist agricultural landscape. The irrigation and transportation systems balance practicality and rustic charm, with gravel embankments and preserved native weeds restoring the natural ecology.

The farm’s perimeter is defined by a simple gray brick wall, with a minimalist entrance guiding visitors in. Semi-transparent brick walls, inspired by traditional Chinese garden structures, create a flowing visual space.
Sunlight filters through the perforated brick, casting shifting light patterns on the ground, leading visitors into the fields. Parallel pitched-roof canopies and fan-shaped awnings form an outdoor dining area that complements the existing structures.
The architecture blends seamlessly with the surroundings, where cultivated crops form the base, and fruit trees and shrubs naturally dot the area, creating a calm yet vibrant modern rural landscape.
The restaurant renovation preserves the original steel structure and corrugated steel roof. Modular walls ensure thermal comfort across seasons, while vertical and horizontal windows on the north and south bring the farm’s landscape indoors. The exterior features old timber and rusted steel plates, reflecting the farm’s vitality. Inside, wood-fiber acoustic panels, reclaimed wood, and terrazzo create a quiet atmosphere, harmonizing with the farmland outside.
In terms of spatial planning, the core circulation is centrally located, allowing flexible access from both the north and south sides. Doors on both sides open and close to create adaptable zones.
A large landscape window on the east side serves as the visual focal point, making the long dining table feel as though it’s set in the fields. On the west side, a coffee and beverage bar integrates seamlessly into the space, while the farthest corner offers a private lounge area for socializing and relaxation.

ZAOHE ECOLOGICAL FARM represents Fon Studio’s continued exploration of “contextual design.” From the materials used for the façade to the interior layout and the farm’s ecological experience, the design centers on the authentic connection between people, land, and food. The architecture and site become a container that links memories, supports daily life, and conveys the essence of living.
