JXY Studio:

JXY Studio: In the primeval forest, the silent presence of soil, vegetation, sunlight, breeze, and rainfall—those universal yet essential elements of nature—constitutes the fundamental nutrients that sustain all forms of life. These elements continually support and generate innumerable layers of ecological systems, ranging from the vast to the microscopic. Grounded in nature’s inherently diverse ecological framework, myriad species evolve into multifarious life forms, each developing adaptive modes of survival, communicative signals for interaction, and shelters—whether caves, nests, or other enclosures—for concealment and habitation.

Inserted within this natural milieu, human-made artifacts—ranging from roads and pipelines to facilities, buildings, and the various materials required for dwelling and production—embody the indispensable necessities of human existence. These include the provision of water, food, energy, and beyond. Such strategies and methods of survival, though distinct in form, are fundamentally analogous to the adaptive responses of natural species to their environments. This parallel reveals a shared ground, suggesting possibilities for mutual reinforcement, reciprocal sustenance, and coexistence between the human and the non-human.

The installation emerges from this intertextuality of nature and artificiality, survival and symbiosis. Employing ubiquitous industrial materials and modular structures drawn from the human world, it bears within itself the forest’s soil, replete with microorganisms and humus, thus nourishing a multitude of species—insects, birds, and plants—inhabiting its framework. Divided and stratified in its spatial growth, the installation allows light and air to permeate its structure, enabling access to sunlight, breeze, and rainfall, while fostering the circulation of vital signals among its living inhabitants.

“The Lighthouse” responds to the interdependencies among diverse species, seeking to blur the boundaries between the “infrastructures” produced by natural life and those manufactured by human life. Through interaction and synergy, natural nutrients and human construction become mutually sustaining. In departing from the perspective of a single species, the installation intertwines and reconfigures multiple life-forms and activities, constructing an artificial habitat that sustains the plurality of species inhabiting the natural world. At once, it stands as a lighthouse within the human world—guiding us toward coexistence and co-flourishing with all living beings.
