L&A design: Located in Kunming, a romantic and joyful city, the Sky Garden was originally designed as a sparkling paradise within multi-layered spaces. However, a pile of problems hit us on the original site at the very beginning, such as no public transport, high completion risk, tight project schedule and unexpected project costs. Alternatively, we selected a new project site on a triangular rental parking lot with the size less than 3,000 ㎡.At that time, it seemed that everything is impossible for us.

Inspired by M. C. Escher, finally, we decided to take up the challenge to build an “Impossible World”. Then who is Escher? You may be not familiar with him, but you must know about his famous works featuring mathematical objects and operations including impossible objects, explorations of infinity, etc.. The well-known indie puzzle game “Monument Valley” began its development just with a piece of concept art drawn in the style of M. C. Escher.
Always, a pile of upsets appear in the world of adults. Why a pile of upsets appear? Because a pile of restrictions are imposed on the adults’ daily life. But in Escher’s artistic world, there is no restrictions and there is nothing impossible. Even the most rational mathematics could be well expressed in art, a kind of profound and mysterious art between science and philosophy.Let us, adults, go back to our childhood, a world filled with imagination and adventure, to enjoy a fun journey in the “Impossible Paradise” – Sky Garden. Little Ashe (an IP image in this project), will be the guide of this journey. Occasionally, Ashe knocked over Luis Barragán’s palette, she would like to play a joyful game of color and light!
▼探索路线 action path
Oh! What a narrow entrance! It is mysterious. You are following your curiosity, and moving toward the garden. Suddenly! All the light brightening up, you find you are actually embraced by the puzzling red walls. Where will the red-wall maze lead you to? Keep calm. Just follow your curiosity and move on.
Turning around and around in the maze, all of a sudden, you stop. A mini sunken courtyard is open to you. Trees, shrubs and orange walls is playing light and shadows on the water. What an amazing oil painting looks like!
Some words are written on the wall. Is it a passphrase of the color-and-light game in this maze?
Look! Little Ashe is sitting quietly on the top of a wall, holding a balloon sky-blue colored.
Light is playing naughtily through reflections, perspectives, refractions and projections between the world and its images. In the Sky Garden, a white colored arch passage is built, contrasting with the straight rays of natural light. Entering this passage, you will find yourself being in a church-like sacred space, enjoying the vast sky and Sky City above in a peaceful way.
Also inspired by M. C. Escher, another fun space is built with concentric circles in the Sky Garden. The red ball set in the center stands as a tribute to the magical crystal ball often appeared in Escher’s works. It looks like a pendulum swinging in the circles, telling the secrets of time.
After visiting the concentric-circle space, a Castle Oasis surprisingly appears in front of you. It looks as if a floating castle in the sky drifts down onto an oasis. And it is right here the intersection for spatial rules of the game and wonderful experience of the real journey in the maze. Each stairway at the intersection will lead you to a brand new corner filled with enthusiasm and surprise.
Walking through the castle, you will find a narrow white doorway at first, and then, there is a small vibrant world of plants behind the doorway, waiting for your visit. It will be an journey with curiosity and desire for exploration.
It is a vibrant grove nestled in such a gorgeous blue world, in the bright sunshine, showing its special charming tranquility. The branches are elegantly curved with slender leaves on the top. Sunlight is playing with branch shadows on the brightly blue wall.
Facing to the blue world, a holy white wall stands as a quiet backdrop, playing another drama of light and shadows, time drifting in between. At the corner, brown volcanic rocks are spread, dotted with groups of dragon juniper in its special quiet way.
Along the white wall, a winding path will lead you into a fascinated flowering wonderland. Flowers are richly planted with other plants, bringing gentle ambience into this wall enclosed space.Look! Little Ashe is still sitting on the top of the wall, but now holding a telescope to give us a right direction to go on the journey.
Ah! What a fantastic pink world! Triangle Paradise is really a paradise with warm and sweet reminiscence of childhood! And triangle is really a shape with its distinct characteristics.
Stepping on Triangle Paradise, spontaneously, you will put the famous Penrose Triangle into your mind, which is known as the perfectly impossible triangle. Hence, it is just the right end of this journey, of this a triangular site. Also, it is the most powerful response to this “impossible” project.
Complex techniques and hyperbolic colors are both adopted into this impossible project to build an “Impossible World” in a dramatic way. It makes the existed triangle parking lot revitalized, and an impressive and attractive residential demonstration area comes out. Always, a highly identifiable object is easily remembered by the public.
