|| 墟里与徐岙底 Xuli and Xu’aodi
“Xuli” is named from Tao Yuanming’s poem “Warm distant village, Yiyi ruins smoke”. “Xuli” brand set up from three rooms in 2015 cottage, bdeveloping to the diversified ruralcomunities, and determined to be a discoverer of the beauty and value of rural China. In yer 2018, Xuli team came into Xu’aodi, hand in hand with the government in environmental management, traditional village houses transform and ancient skill development. According to the plan, the 38 ancient residential buildings in Xu’aodi will be divided into homestay area, new village living area, lifestyle cluster and public supporting area, so as to create a “Peach Garden” suitable fro living and business. In addition to staying in homestay, theyt also invite new villages who want to live in the garden to settle down and work here.
During the past four years, Xuli has developed more than 10 ancient buildings. At the present time, there are 9 opened homestay, as well as Redqu pavilion workshop, vegetation dyeting workshop, tea study etc. Here, you can rent a house, enjoy a comfortable modern living environment and considerate butler service. At sunset, you can walk along villages and fields, and wander through simple homes to experience rural life, as if you have traveled back to a parallel world 800 years ago.
Head to the viilage’s highest point – Dingtou Cuo, now converted into a tea study.
He indigenous people in the viilage still keep farmland. People from the city for the first time to see fresh ginger leaves, a very fresh smell.
Hold a League Building in the open Jurenfu, to experiencen the moment in traces of the ancient years.
Meet and chat in a cozy modern homestay.
At night, make a bonfire and have a romantic lawn dinner under the stars.
Guantang Interior Design (GTD) undertook the renovation and design of three homestays. At the first sight, we marveled at the traditional simplicity and beauty of the old buidilings, but also felt sorry for the growing neglect and dilapidation. How to apply the modern architectural space technology into the tranditional, while retain the original village style as much as possible, and integrate the convenience of modern life into the buildings, make the ancient constructions shining in the new era, let modern people enjoy the life in rural – this is the main theme of the modification.
Each of the three homestays is different, and each one is equivalent to a separate proposition. In the deisgn, we try to explore their own characteristics and create different styles under the unified tone, so we have the final appearance of “ Plum”, “Persimmon” and “Tea”, as if different brothers and sisters in the same familty, in line with each other, but with distinct personality.
|| 独栋复式 之 “梅” Duplex Single-Family – the “Plum”
“Plum” is the smallest building in Xu’aodi village, with two floors and a total of 94 square meters. There were a variety of possibilities for her renovation.
– Change into regular guest rooms, 2 rooms are slightly cramped while 1 room is a bit too luxurious.
– Change into public space, the scale is not wide enough.
– It is also possible to change to team use.
Finally we decided to break the routine and make a new attempt to build it into duplex single-family guest room of the style of “one family built”, which will carry out the vacation through and add more interest and luxury.
The detached cottage before the conversion
The renovated cottage, named as “Plum”
The floor plan of “Plum”
The original building of “Plum” has three sides of rammed earth and a wooden wall. During the renovation process, the original roof and three rammed earth walls were retained, and the wooden wall on the entrance was removed and replaced with a transparent facade to help more light enter the room. As the sun rises and the moon sets, sunlight reaches into the deepest parts of the room, bringing light and warmth. At night, the lights come on, and the whole house radiates homely warmth from the inside out.
The old wooden structure of the original interior building is beautiful and shocking, which makes people admire the use of local materials and architectural aesthetics of the ancients. All of them are preserved and exposed during the renovation process, thus forming a dialogue between the old and new materials in th old building, and also reflecting the integration of traditional space and modern life.
The first floor is the living and bathroom space. When the guests arrive, they feel as if they are back at home. They throw the wrapped coat and lie back on the soft sofa, feeling relax and comfortable.
On the second floor are bedroom and a terrace. Using the original old wooden structure, the space of the second floor is gently “placed” on the roof frame, and the arc is subtly used locally to pick up the space. The arc contour continues to be extended on the second floor, penetrating to the outdoor balcony, and the facade is also more vivid and interesting.
“Plum” is the smallest one in the homestay area. It’s the ideal choice for couples to move in. We also make a widen design on one side of the sofa in living space, which provides the possibility of an extra bed for a family of three to stay. The building named as “Plum” implies the meaning of “Proud Cold”. In could weather, all other flowers wither, suddenly can see a plum broken core at the corner, that is a great joy. Couples nest in a single loft, enjoy the flowers, whisper or quiet reading, the most romantic.
The curved contour extends on the second floor and penetrates from the interior to the exterior, bringing an interesting on-step balcony.
|| 亲子入住首选 之 “柿” First Choice for Parent-Child Check-in – “Persimmon”
Most of the houses in Xu’aodi face north, while “Persimmon” house faces west alone and the entrance is directly facing to the road, which is particularly out of place in the village. In the process of renovation, the moving line was adjusted and some concealed space was added partially, which greatly improved the comfort and experience of stay.
Before and After of “Persimmon”
The Floor plan of “Persimmon”
For the entrance of first floor, adjust the original straight entry to the left side of the house, increase a buffer zone and porch, adjust the pace of entry, so that guests can make a short stay and change shoes at arrive which make a good sense of experience. And the top of this buffer space, just become the terrace of the guset room on second floor which achieve two good advantages.
The original entrance door, retaining its old wooden door frame, is sealed with transparent glass below, transformed into a glass upturn window above, and set as an overlooking windowsill, which not only strengthens the interaction and association between inside and outside space, but also providing more light into the house, forming a new landscape.
A new porch was added to the left, and the roof was used as a terrace on the second floor.
The original entrance door was changed into a window overlooking place.
The first floor contains a living room and a guest room. The living room changes the traditional form into a chic sunken “Tranpollne sofa area” which children can jump from the edge and enjoy the fun. This makes “Persimmon” become the first choice of parent and children to stay in.
A door in the corner of the living room opens to the first-floor guest room. This guest room is newly built against the old rammed earth wall, which broke the original serious and inflexible image of the old house, and also the top becomes the terrace space of the second floor. In this way, the three original small guest rooms of “Persimmon” all possess their own terraces or courtyards, which make guests breathe freely in nature.
The sofa fabric chooses the nature flax material in color of local Redqu, which can be linked to the ancient village during the homestay experience.
The trampoline sofa area in the center of the living room is very popular with guests.
The first floor guest room is tucked away in the corner. Open the door, it possesses its own courtyard and mountain views.
There two guest room in the second floor. The branch wall of the two rooms deliberately deviate from the original wooden structure layout. The original clumsy but beautiful wooden structure with the metope become the most attractive decoration in the room. The old benches searched from all over world are used as side tables which also well decorated the rooms.
The second-floor guest room is flooded with sunlight through skylights and terraces.
Ideal choice of group vacation – “Tea”
The “Tea” is located at the very end of the village, surrounded by forest and mountains, with a relatively large building volume and perfect functions. After renovation, “Tea” contains a shared living room + tea space + 4 bedrooms, and is rented by whole. This becomes an ideal choice of several families to travel and stay together.
Tea” before renovation
Tea” after renovation
The floor plan of “Tea”
The first floor of “Tea” is the public living room, dining room, kitchen and tea room. The sunken design of the living room pulls in the distance between the sitters. Adding wood to the real fireplace and lighting a bonfire, this instantly warms the room.
The living room originally had two clay stoves, one on the left and one on the right. The clay stove beside the dining table was retained in the renovation so that the memory of the old house could be preserved and displayed, and also take the funtion as food cabinet. The stove on the other side was removed to make room for stairwell. The flue was removed to provide a lookout window to the outside.
In order to better show the clumsy and beautiful wooden structure of the old building, the whole space is strengthened with the least visible steel Structure as possible.
On the east side of the living room, a tatami tea room is inserted. The tea room has sliding doors on three sides, which can be opened to obtain a 270 degree view. Open the door, a lush mountain landscape is full of sight; Close the door, the whole world belongs to you. This independence tea space is a pure land in the noisy world. Among the room, you can please yourself, can please people, quite and indifferent.
On the right side of the old house, there was originally a wood room used to store farm tools, now is turned into an extra private guest room linked to the living room. There are three guest rooms on the second floor, which are presented in the form of couch. No matter the king room, standard room or extra bed, all can be satisfied completely.
On the first floor, the woodshed was converted into a bedroom.
On the second floor, the beds can be divided and closed to meet the needs of differen guest.
Terrace tub on the second floor, enjoy soaking in the moutains.
As dusk falls, enjoy the peace of ancient village away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
