Tianhua Landscape:The West Bund Gate M Dream Center: A Lifestyle in Shanghai.
From an afternoon nap at Xuhui Runway Park to post-work drinks at West Bund Dream Center, this scarce stretch of prime commercial waterfront along the Huangpu River is quietly rewriting the urban lifestyle script for Shanghai residents a year after its opening. It’s no longer just a City Walkcheck-in spot but has evolved into a City Liveexperience where people immerse themselves and embrace laid-back living.

A Hundred-Year Foundation of Industrial Strength: The Shanghai Cement Plant

The Shanghai Cement Plant (commissioned and commenced production in 1923) was once the largest wet-process cement plant in Asia, founded by the “Coal King” Liu Hongsheng. The cement it produced was used in the construction of the Park Hotel. The development of national industry laid the industrial foundation of the Xuhui Riverside area. Today, the iconic 80-meter-diameter pre-homogenization shed has been transformed into the West Bund Dome Art Center, while adjacent old warehouses have been repurposed into the West Bund Dream Center, a complex integrating a grand theater, an art center, and a commercial district

The Artistic Prelude: How an Open Riverfront and an Iconic Museum Redefined West Bund

The transformation began around 2010 with the physical and visual opening of the Xuhui Riverside, turning once-inaccessible industrial docks into continuous public pathways. This act returned the waterfront to the people. The pivotal moment arrived around 2014 with the opening of the Long Museum (West Bund). Its striking vault-umbrella architecture not only redesigned the skyline but also democratized art by placing a world-class institution directly on the public riverbank. Art was no longer distant but an integrated part of the daily landscape. Together, the connected riverfront and the iconic museum catalyzed the area’s rebirth, shifting its identity from an industrial zone to an arts-driven destination and setting the stage for the future Dream Center.

The Evolution of a “Dream”: From DreamWorks to Dream Center, From Stage to Everyday Life

The original plan for the “DreamWorks” envisioned creating an “Eastern Broadway” on the waterfront, focusing on large-scale performances and film production . However, during implementation, it became clear that relying solely on performances and film screenings was insufficient to sustain such a large waterfront area . The focus consequently shifted towards the more pragmatic “Dream Center” concept, emphasizing trendy retail, art spaces, sports facilities, dining, and neighborhood commerce .
This adjustment was not a step back but a move towards greater relevance. Shanghai residents needed more than a grand theater visited a few times a year; they needed daily destinations for after-work strolls, weekend activities, and riverside dining . The Dream Center integrates art, trendy entertainment, sports, and dining into an open neighborhood, making these elements accessible for spontaneous and frequent visits . This embodies the vibrant, integrated lifestyle appropriate for the Bund, where art, culture, and leisure converge seamlessly into the everyday urban fabric

The West Bund Dream Center: A Confluence of Urban Energy

Art museum visits, business meetings/lunch breaks/after-work drinks in the Media Port, and strolls/dog walks along the river—three distinct streams of people converge, collectively unleashing the vibrant potential of the West Bund. The West Bund has become synonymous with a lifestyle .

Handling the overall landscape concept and schematic design for the West Bund Dream Center was JCFO, while THLA (Tianhua Landscape) was responsible for the detailed design development, construction documents, and subsequent optimization . The team accompanied this project through over two years of meticulous implementation starting from late 2022. This journey involved continuous collaboration with JCFO and the client team during design development, coupled with countless on-site support sessions. Their efforts culminated in the project’s grand opening in August 2024 .

Furthermore, the team continued to make numerous atmospheric refinements during the following year of operations. Finally, by the transition between summer and autumn 2025, the West Bund Dream Center revealed its “complete form,” having firmly established itself among Shanghai’s commercial elite .

Urban Public Space: Interconnection, Accessibility, and Synergy

“A Composite yet Legible Urban Public Space System”

The master plan, jointly developed by MVRDV, Atelier Deshaus, and JCFO, has organized the public spaces of the Dream Center into a highly accessible structure that interconnects the city, internal streets, and the waterfront . This system integrates several key components: an urban axis linking the Media Port district to the vibrant waterfront; permeable corridors transitioning from large-scale office buildings to the more intimate scale of riverside structures; multi-level pedestrian corridors extending from the ground to elevated walkways; and an open waterfront interface stretching from the blocks to the quay . Together, these layered yet clearly defined elements fuse into an integrated public space that breathes as one with the city .

Commercial Space, Restrained Expression:
Embracing Blank Space and Design Restraint

From a Design “Arena” to a Civic “Living Room”

During the deepening of the landscape scheme, we engaged in continuous and in-depth discussions with JCFO and the client to ensure the implementation would maximally preserve the systematic spatial structure and design integrity of the original plan. Two key characteristics received particular attention and refinement in our development—what we metaphorically call “Blank Space” and “Design Restraint “.

Blank Space: Leaving Room for Activities

· Flexible Space: Setting the Stage Without Dictating the Play

“Blank space” is not mere emptiness; it is a deliberate strategy to create interconnected, flexible, and adaptable spaces. Instead of being packed with various designed “highlights,” space is reserved for civic activities.
The Theater Plaza at the end of the northern water-front corridor, typically serving as a dry fountain plaza, is a 40*65 m2 area free of hard partitions. Since its opening, it has continuously hosted various large and small events, including carnival ice rinks, waterfront music festivals, and waterfront film screenings. The southern water-front corridor, usually an open pedestrian space, with its 115*22 m2 scale, also provides ample room for activities like commercial curatorial events

In addition to organized commercial events, the dock areas and waterfront steps have naturally evolved into a popular gathering spot for residents and impromptu street performers. This is where the “City Live” concept finds a true embodiment and meaning

·Free-Form Outdoor Seating: Letting Business Spill Naturally onto the Street

Beyond fully reserved pedestrian passageways (over 9 meters along the waterfront, over 4 meters for internal streets), the remaining space along the building facades is fully opened for merchants to utilize. There are no deliberately delineated outdoor seating areas with uniform pavers or standardized furniture. Instead, it’s characterized by the dedicated efforts of merchants to thoughtfully develop their own commercial extensions. On this unified, open foundation, a variety of distinctive outdoor seating scenes have emerged. Outside Ama Handcrafted Tea, young milk tea enthusiasts “lie flat” and relax; near Blue Bottle Coffee, parents watch their children play in the water features; and alongside Bloom Market, office workers enjoy the river breeze with a special cocktail in hand. Together, they create the vibrant, lifelike street life tapestry of the Dream Center

Design Restraint: Curbing Overdesign – When Design Steps Back, Life Steps Forward

The overarching goal of the landscape design at the Dream Center is to create comfortable, inviting spaces where people naturally want to linger, not to showcase design virtuosity. It aims to let the landscape serve as a backdrop to everyday life, rather than a scene-stealing protagonist. “Design Restraint” is not merely about cost-saving; it’s about allocating resources where they matter most. It is only when design willingly recedes into the background that people truly become the protagonists of the space .

Instead of creating a series of eye-catching, Instagram-famous spots, the master plan and architectural design have already established an intensely rich yet harmonious spatial framework. Our key task, therefore, shifted to articulating this spatial structure effectively through landscape. The landscape design employs an almost “line-drawing” approach, focusing on pragmatic aspects like leveling elevation changes, organizing drainage, and modularizing materials—relatively “invisible” work aimed at ensuring spatial fluency and functional ease of use. During the development phase, we consciously avoided decorative details with no interactive value. For instance, the floodwall structure is left as exposed concrete, augmented with a measured amount of wooden backrest. Devoid of “makeup,” this approach encourages genuine contact and interaction, while simultaneously highlighting the site’s industrial heritage character.

Through in-depth discussions with JCFO and the client, and based on the spatial element system defined in the overall plan, we adopted large-scale linear format paving, standard rectangular tree planters, uniformly sized furniture, and modular planting schemes. This strategy reduced construction complexity, improved buildability, ensured a cohesive spatial identity across the vast site, and introduced a subtle rhythm. This simple, relaxed landscape base does not compete for attention. It not only reduces the cognitive load on visitors but also makes it easier for them to focus on their activities and the river view itself.

When visitors spontaneously place their milk tea cups on the floodwall or squeeze together for an impromptu hug by the river—that, perhaps, is the true mark of successful “Design Restraint.” Design should be like the air we breathe, present yet unobtrusive. Less is more

From “Arrow” to “Space” to “Concrete”:
Continuity, Elimination, Uniformity

“A System Blueprint Guided by a Unifying Principle”

As firm believers in the theory of “Landscape Urbanism Arrowology,” we consider the rational organization of urban public space relationships to be paramount. However, even more crucial is the ability to translate this systemic blueprint into tangible space and ensure it is consistently implemented down to every last piece of “concrete.” Therefore, throughout the design development process, we continuously scrutinized every elevation point and every pavement slab to ensure they aligned with the overall spatial relationship. This approach accordingly became the key strategy and philosophical guideline for our detailed design work.

Unobstructed Access to the River: Continuous Corridors + Disappearing Elevation Changes

Continuous Corridors: These are not merely pathways but vibrant channels designed to “guide citizens conveniently to the water.” Through meticulous gentle slope designs (with gradients <5%), we ensured accessibility for wheelchairs and strollers, seamlessly connecting the urban fabric with the riverbank and fundamentally breaking down the barrier traditionally posed by enclosed floodwalls.

The “Vanishing” Floodwall:Building upon the structure of the existing secondary floodwall, the design utilizes connecting steps and softens the hardscape with planting. This approach allows the highly functional floodwall to visually and experientially “vanish,” creating a continuous, natural, and people-friendly waterfront topography

People sit casually on the steps, gazing at the skyline of Qiantan on the opposite bank. As the “friendly rival” of the Xuhui Riverside, Qiantan has also become the most beautiful urban backdrop for the Dream Center. In the evening, the riverside steps transform into an impromptu seating area for street performances. The river breeze, mingling with the laid-back melodies, creates a unique and dreamy atmosphere along the waterfront.

Chill Shine

Sutured Interfaces: Three-Dimensional Integration

The connection via gentle gradient slopes along the grand axis inevitably introduced complex variations in site elevations. For commercial building interfaces, which typically require level ground, this created numerous elevation challenges that demanded meticulous resolution. Through the use of gentle ramps and stairs, we seamlessly connected interfaces at different elevations—buildings, streets, green spaces, and the riverbank—eliminating any sense of fragmentation. This approach creates a multi-level spatial network that is pedestrian-friendly, fully accessible, and conducive to free-form outdoor seating

The master plan incorporated an extensive network of second-level interconnected walkways. While primarily intended for circulation, these pathways, through their precise alignment with ground-level spaces and visual corridors and the addition of strategically placed seating, have unsurprisingly evolved into ideal spots for citizens to pause, relax, gaze out over the river, and simply lose themselves in contemplation.

Chill Shine

Unified Base: Linear Strip Paving from City to Riverfront

A clear, unified, yet subtly varied pavement system acts as a silent guide. It reinforces spatial axes, distinguishes between different functional areas (such as the main water-front axis and secondary corridors, internal streets, the Longteng Avenue sidewalk, and the riverside promenade), enhances quality through material details, and simultaneously addresses practical considerations of cost control in engineering.

Postscript: Acknowledging the Current Situation with Broken Pavers. The observed prevalence of broken bricks is indeed a present reality. While the original design had already accounted for standard vehicle loads in its material specifications and thickness considerations, the immense popularity of the Dream Center has far exceeded our initial projections. The frequent ingress and egress of heavy vehicles for event setup have placed significant load pressure on the pavement. Currently, the damaged paving is being progressively replaced, repaired, and adjusted. This replacement process, admittedly, has been slightly hampered by the continuous scheduling of events, which limits available working windows.
This situation, however, has provided a crucial insight: for venues with high-demand activity schedules, it is essential to consider material selections that exceed conventional design standards to ensure long-term durability

Green Rhythm: Modular Planting

Based on varying spatial scales and atmospheric requirements, we adopted a modular and standardized plant configuration strategy. This approach ensured rapid implementation with cohesive results, creating a continuous, easily maintained, and distinctive green foundation.

Inner Streets: Intimate and Refined

Along the main passage of the inner streets, plants are arranged on both sides, creating a themed gallery of trees through the linear planting of cherry blossoms. The ground cover layer near the building facades is designed for viewing at eye level and from above, with an optimal viewing distance of 2-5 meters. Based on planting areas measuring 2-4m by 6-14m, we employed planting modules of about 2-3m in size. Over ten plant species were selected, primarily featuring silver-gray and olive-green herbs and shrubs, to form a continuous and rhythmic plant atmosphere. This design gently guides visitors and naturally creates a soft “backrest” for casual sitting and relaxation.
Framework of the Evergreen Base: Ligustrum japonicum ‘Howardii’, Pittosporum tobira, Buxus sinica, and Farfugium japonicumform the structural skeleton.

Delicate Textural Layers: Plants like Miscanthus sinensis ‘Gracillimus’, Rosmarinus officinalis, Callistemon citrinus, Vitex agnus-castus, and Matteuccia struthiopterisadd fine, intricate textures.

Color Accents: Flowers such as Agapanthus africanus, Verbena officinalis, Ruellia brittoniana, and Abelia × grandifloraprovide vibrant color enhancements.

After a year of growth, the plants have largely established a stable growth pattern, exhibiting a lush and overflowing vitality

Epilogue: Compared to the relatively sparse vegetation at the opening, the carefully selected plant varieties, chosen for their adaptability to Shanghai’s climate, have burst forth with lush vitality after a year of growth—even spilling over the planters. This vigorous growth has significantly enriched the spatial atmosphere of the neighborhood and provides a valuable reference for the growth and maintenance of plants in similar long-term operational projects

 The Waterfront: Expansive and Open
The spatial scale transitions dramatically from the intimate 15-meter width of the inner streets to a generous 60+ meters along the waterfront. Correspondingly, the scale of our planting modules also expands to over 20 meters, creating a more relaxed and expansive green interface. Graceful miscanthus grasses sway in the river breeze, drawing the gaze into the distance. At the same time, strategically placed, tall trees with high canopies provide dappled shade along the pathways, significantly enhancing the pedestrian experience by the river

05 City Live!——

City Live! — Redefining the New Chapter of Waterfront Life:
Engagement, Immersion, Livin

The Extension of the “20-Minute Park Effect”: The West Bund Dream Center as Shanghai’s New Urban Template

Some initially questioned whether an open-block concept could suit Shanghai’s climate, with its cold winters and hot summers. However, after a full year of operation, the West Bund Dream Center—integrating art, sports,fashion, pet-friendly policies, and F&B communication—has emerged as a compelling new paradigm for Shanghai’s waterfront living. It embodies a unique form of Shanghai-style “City Live”: Media Port office workers recharge on the lawn of the Runway Park during lunch breaks and unwind with a post-work drink at a Dream Center bar;

Art enthusiasts, after visiting an exhibition at the Dome Art Center, find a spot to sit casually on the riverside steps. Pet owners enjoy leisurely walks with their furry companions along the water. The high demand for outdoor activities and comfortable, convenient public space means traditional enclosed malls are no longer sufficient. Here, the “20-minute park effect” stretches into a round-the-clock rhythm of life. This represents the definitive moment when urban public space evolves from a mere functional carrier into a true life-sustaining vessel

Shanghai’s New Urban Vibe: “Weariness” Belongs to the Dream Center

If Luxelakes represents the “ease” of the new elite, and Aranya embodies a literary “solitude,” then the Gate M West Bund Dream Center interprets the “unfettered comfort” that follows the fulfillment of desires for Shanghai’s residents. Some say this place lacks the city’s typical grandeur. Yet, it is precisely because it sheds some of that tightly-wound refinement that you can arrive with the slight weariness after work, find a cozy corner, gaze at the river, lose yourself in thought, or meet friends. Amidst the shimmering lights and the gentle caress of the river breeze, you discover a moment of your very own “City Live”
