Surfacedesign:Auckland International Airport sits on an isthmus on New Zealand’s North Island, where a rugged coastline meets the water. The Maori first arrived in New Zealand near the present-day airport in waka canoes from Polynesia. Maori tribes transformed the landscape by cultivating imported tropical plants in stone-lined excavations, which became a sacred typology. Centuries later, European immigrants further modified New Zealand’s landscape with orchards and timber trees. Where the Maori used mounded stones to protect crops from the climate, the Europeans chose layered plantings of hedgerows to serve that purpose.

Auckland International Airport’s landscape celebrates the country’s rich history of humans engaging with the land. As part of a multi-year landscaping masterplan at and near the airport, Surfacedesign flanked a main thoroughfare with historically inspired details. Stone mounds that reference Maori stone fields rise from the ground, helping draw attention away from vehicular traffic. A datum of European-inspired hedgerows overlays these mounds, creating a simplified ground plane from which the greater Auckland landscape—both urban and volcanic—can be readily comprehended. Chevron planting patterns are inspired by the airport’s landing strips.

The design also incorporates smaller stone “blades,” which reference the motion of a jet engine and emphasize the excitement of arrival and travel by plane, car, foot, and bicycle through the airport landscape. Native New Zealand grasses soften the stone blades and provide a regional connection. A spectrum of colors pulled from the dramatic New Zealand landscape, from Huka Falls to Auckland’s volcanoes, is projected on the stone blades. Further, Surfacedesign’s earthforms serve a dual purpose, addressing on-site soils remediation and stormwater treatment as part of the larger ecological mission of the airport.

Because of its proximity to the International Date Line, New Zealand is one of the first countries to receive sunlight each day. Surfacedesign used this first-light concept in an air-travel context to welcome travelers to Auckland International Airport by air and ground with vibrant natural colors and geometric earth mounds.
