L&A design: The inherent artistic aura of Beijing City always quietly permeates everywhere in the historical sites and Hutongs, also in various art museums.

Regrettably, the sense of culture default appears day by day with rapidly changing pace of life in an irresistible way without exception even in Beijing, an ancient capital with rich culture heritage. Why not stop the rapid pace of life for a while to escape from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis? Enjoy yourself into the vortex of nature and art.

Escape from hustle and bustle, make yourself slow down. Slower than the pace of afternoon sun, slower than the pace of growth rings. Stepping into MTL Art Experience Museum, enjoying a gentle and cozy moment only belongs to art.

POPlAR FOREST

“It is neither quite luxurious nor quite exquisite, but it is a paradise for a moment of consolation”, the designers of this project described their work like this. The project site is set back fifteen meters from the property line, planting a poplar forest to create a tranquil and comfortable oasis for the city. Is it really a paradise for a moment of consolation when passers-by step into this forest?

“Geometric grids” were designed by an overall ground logic language in accordance with local urban fabric and architectural forms. A large number of plants were planted in the “grids”, trying to revitalize a more ecological environment in a way of “natural restoration”, so as to build a landscaping space for people to kiss the nature freely in their everyday life.

The aesthetically interlaced walls act as the boundary between the city and the site. They are extending through the site, and then disappearing in the poplar forest. Without the interference of complicated decorations, the project is designed as a clear and fresh landscape space, to calm the noisy city by a power of silence.

Take a deep breath in the hidden foggy woods. You will hear the birds singing in the trees and the leaves rustling in the wind.

Light and shadow are playing intimately and gracefully in the woods, producing a lighting wall and a drawing board in the nature.

WAKE UP THE BIRDS

The mini waterfalls break the site’s tranquility, the birds flying through the woods, flying over the misty water, shadows of trees dancing in the breeze.

Stay awhile before the mini waterfalls, you will find yourself in a meditative mood when watching the pouring water with a dynamic rhythm of vortex, embraced by extremely tranquil surroundings. Suddenly, infinite imagination will fly into your mind when you are immersed in such collision between the dynamic and the static.

Meditation is exactly an ideal way to escape from daily hustle and bustle and to enjoy cozy tranquility for the moment alone. Bathing in the warm sunshine, you will feel the space is breathing, and everything around you is calming down again. Shadows of trees and buildings are reflected on the water, quietly waiting for the flying birds next time to break such charming tranquility.

Tall poplar trees with slender postures are swaying, flickering, in the wind, in the sunshine. Stones, grass, gentle slopes, woods, a picture of the nature emerges, within unfettered comfort and peace.

Open your heart to the nature, relax yourself in this poplar forest, and breathe freely in the air of nature and art.

At nightfall, mist and clouds are playing with gentle breeze around you. It’s a nice time for you to put yourself into such engaging comfort and peace.

Night is still falling, the afterglow lingering.

DESIGNER’S VIEW

The design of this project was inspired by Joseph Beuys’ work of land art – 7000 Oaks – City Forestation Instead of City Administration. “Art alone makes life possible.” Beuys advocated a kind of “applied art” to reestablish a belief – reestablish an close affinity between people and people, between people and their surroundings, and between people and nature, further to rebuild the society and the environment. It is the artist’s new definition on the “function” of art. We hoped to carry out Beuys’ art philosophy in this project at the very beginning: to create a city forest available to everyone without special management, to encourage everyone to participate in protecting the forest naturally and unconsciously, further to draw on the wisdom of the crowds to build an artistic landscape space.

At present, we could not predict if the project would bring any active cultural impact on the region, but we firmly believe it will be a city forest freely available to everyone and an ideal city habitat freely available to every bird. Both physically and psychologically speaking, it is a completely open landscape space for people and nature with great potential. It also could be regarded as a rethinking of Beuys’ “social sculpture” theory.
