DAOYUAN:Nestled within the verdant embrace of Chongqing’s Nanshan Mountain, time seems to flow at a different pace. At the end of the winding mountain road, a site built by history and caressed by nature awakens quietly. This was once where Paul Asmey, a German friend, sought solace in 1916, and it also bore a special diplomatic mission during wartime. Today, shedding its former specific functions, it has been transformed through restoration and careful planning into a “Mountain Lodge” that integrates accommodation and dining.

Original Site: A Constrained Space with Relatively Cluttered Surroundings

Instead of being a loud reconstruction, our design is a cautious act of “wiping” and “dialogue”—wiping away the dust of time from the textures, allowing the century-old stacked stones and today’s gazes to engage in a tranquil, enduring conversation about memory, nature, and healing amid the clouds and forest waves of Nanshan.

The overture of design begins with the most humble reading of historical traces. The stones on the building walls, with their vastly different textures and the logic of their splices and silent ravines, become the only cipher through which we connect landscape and architecture. We do not introduce foreign formal languages; instead, we allow the landscape to become an extension and response to the life of this stone wall.

The weight of history and the elegant context of modern design collide and fuse here—not to overwrite the past, but to endow the site’s memory with a contemporary, perceptible vitality. What the operators hope for is by no means a brief stay, but a “healing memory” where the aesthetics of natural art and human history are deeply planted in body and soul. Thus, an experiential scroll named “Mountain Lodge Garden Tour” unfurls gradually along the mountain’s contours.

The first chapter of the garden tour is the sudden recognition of “Mountain Lodge Stone Shadows”—not a grand entrance, but a marker and hint about “entering”.

Stepping into the “Mountain Lodge Forecourt”, the narrative of space suddenly opens up. This is the composite platform in front of the main building, a gathering ground and buffer for various sensations. We have preserved the site’s original elevation changes and several key trees, allowing the architecture to emerge naturally from the mountain forest as if grown from it.

The platform is paved with elegant gray-toned stone. Here, there are no definite boundaries—the solemnity of historical architecture, the softness of natural greenery, and the warmth of human interaction coexist harmoniously, defining the lodge’s first character: inclusive and relaxed.

The most exciting dialogue occurs at the “Cliffside Bar”. Outside the bistro, the rugged primitive retaining wall of the cliff forms a fault line of time, while the glass maximizes the erasure of the barrier between people and the landscape.

The babble of water is drawn from between the stones, flowing down through a metal, meticulously crafted channel. This clear, cold sound is both a cleansing and a knock at the door. It softly announces: from here on in, you will temporarily leave the noisy epoch and enter a domain steeped in stories.

Adjacent to the embassy stands an entire stone wall, fully displaying the natural artistry of the mountain’s raw boulders

To get a place for deep reconciliation with oneself, one must venture deeper along the path to reach “Emerald Grove Meditation”. This is a platform hidden in the denser forest at a higher elevation, where design completely recedes, and the protagonists become the towering ancient trees all around, the moist scent of earth, and the shifting skylight piercing through the leaves.

We have placed a bubble pool in the forest, serving as a natural instrument to assist in quieting the mind. Here, with eyes closed, what is heard is the forest’s deep, long breath and one’s own heartbeat gradually synchronizing with it. The weight of history and urban distractions are filtered and purified here by layers of lush greenery.

The destination, or rather, another climax, of the “Mountain Lodge Garden Tour” is the highly private “Mountain-View Garden”. This is a terrace bar reserved for hotel guests. Though small in space, it captures the very essence of Nanshan. Here, enjoying morning coffee or an evening drink, the mountain scenery is no longer a public painting, but a private treasure integrated into the daily moments of life.

At this point, what was once the German Embassy site on Nanshan has ceased to be a frozen monument. Rather, it has become symbolic of arrival—a living, breathing entity imbued with warmth and capable of dialogue, revitalized through the collaborative artistry of design and nature. It waits for every visitor, offering a return to embodied dwelling—deeply wrapped in beauty and tranquility.
