Antao Group: Gongchen Bridge, half Hangzhou’s history. What does the Gongchen Bridge look like to children?

It is said that the caves of Gongchen Bridge look like three circles drawn by the Grand Canal! So, through the eyes of children, we have indeed drawn three circles on the Grand Canal to create the first child-friendly block in Hangzhou – Qiaoxi Child-Friendly Block.

With a total area of 200,000 square metres, Qiaoxi Child-Friendly Block consists of three parts: The International Art Park In The West Bank, the Qiaoxi Historical and Cultural District, and the Xinchang Road – Ningbo Road Good Life District. A Greenway of Gongchen and The Grand Canal organically connects the park’s green space, cultural heritage, and city life to form a child-friendly space with the Grand Canal’s culture as a special quality.

Currently, Qiaoxi Child-Friendly Block was selected as one of the Top10 child-friendly best practice cases in Zhejiang Province at the “National Child-Friendly City” construction site meeting.

In the process of transforming the neighbourhood, we focus on the children, invite them to participate, listen to their voices and fulfil their wishes. In this way, the transformed block is also a special gift from a great friend to the children.

THE NATURAL CIRCLE AROUND US

The Nature Circle “Painting” at The International Art Park In The West Bank – creating a variety of play and activity facilities integrated into the natural environment to encourage and inspire children to touch, explore, create and socialise on their own initiative.

Huge toys can always stimulate children’s curiosity and desire to explore. Taking the Gongchen Bridge as a shape, we put a “Gonggong Mini-Theatre” inside the spacious lawn, with the two sides of the bridge holes as the space for children to freely travel, and the middle bridge hole as a small stage for children to perform.

Every chairs along the canal have a hidden story. We have collected chairs of different shapes, materials and ages to create a “chair museum” that tells stories.

The almost 2,000 kilometres of the Grand Canal are condensed into hundreds of metres of winding paths – “Miniature Canals”. The children stepped over a block of wood as if they were crossing a bridge over a canal.

THE CULTURAL CIRCLE OF CANAL

The Cultural Circle is “painted” in the Qiaoxi Historical and Cultural District, which is not only the Qiaoxi, but also contains 5 national museums, 2 heritage points, 1 square and 1 historical district.

In 1896, the first electric light in Zhejiang Province was lit up in the Shijing Silk Reeling Factory beside the Gongchen Bridge, and now the light has been re-lighted in a brand-new shape, as if it can take children through time and space, and reap the benefits of the experience of “Playing with the Grand Canal” in the interactions of silhouettes of the factory buildings, interactive rope pulling, and voice broadcasting, etc.

Children’s Rule of Law Gallery – Using the space under the promenade, we have combined a colourful and graphic signage system to implant legal content, such as the law on the protection of minors. This is not only a transition area between the historic district and the natural riverside park, but also a small space for all ages to meet and interact.

From new colourful signage to the “One Meter Bubble” programme that connects businesses, we hope that child-friendly urban design doesn’t mean building more playgrounds and recreational facilities, but rather focusing on children’s infrastructure and the spaces where they can move freely on a daily basis.

Currently, 45 shops have joined the “One Meter Bubble” programme to provide heartwarming services for children. Of these, 36 shops have joined in the Qiaoxi section, offering children’s meals, a special pram parking area, a book corner, charity balloons, basic medical equipment and more.

THE LIFE CIRCLE OF MARKETPLACE

The Life Circle is drawn in the Ningbo Road Good Life District. These old houses, old roads and old streets have accompanied the growth of generations of residents and formed familiar childhood memories.

The old scenes of remembrance, such as the Popular Cinema, Gongchen Bridge Department Store and No.1 Road Station, are presented in miniature landscape exhibitions through miniature models, which more fully and holistically recreate the elegance of those days.

No.151 Memory Station – The classic Hangzhou No. 151 bus is an answer to the era of “braided buses”, awakening people’s old memories and becoming a “short story” for parents and children to walk around.

The small square in front of Gongchen Neighbourhood is transformed into a Traffic Science Park, and children become the “little traffic police” in the mini-city, mastering the traffic rules and cultivating safety awareness from an early age; in the Star Garden, children learn about common plants.
