“After a long period of silence, Dali Shuanglang Ancient Town has revived with vibrant liveliness this summer, accompanied by waves of heat and glistening ripples. Surrounded by the Cangshan Mountains and the Erhai Lake, the place where Yun7 has grown alongside them for 12 years, welcomes a new beginning. Designers have unveiled a new trend of eco-friendly vacationing for visitors who come to admire the beauty of the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake.”

The project is located on the main street of Dali Shuanglang, adjacent to Erhai Lake, with the mountains and the sea surrounding it, creating a unique cultural charm. After enduring the tests of time and the market for more than a decade, the hotel faces new demands and challenges, prompting the designer, An Jun, to be invited for its transformation and upgrade. As an architect, designer, and hotel operator, he aims to achieve a multidimensional foresight in a localized manner during the renovation of the new project. His vision is to create a durable design that embodies the contemporary vacation trends, embraces a harmonious coexistence with nature, and is capable of carrying individual memories, vitality, and a sense of life.

Rebirth and architectual reading

The project was born in 2011, and the original building was a small local inn from many years ago. The initial phase was also designed by An Jun. As one of the first guesthouses to settle in Shuanglang Ancient Town, it not only witnessed the transformation of Shuanglang from a small fishing village to the “number one town of Cang’er landscapes” but also responded to the vacation demands of that time through its design.

With a space of 1800 square meters, architectural thinking intervened in the renovation process. The original space was organized into three courtyards, and local saplings were planted, allowing plants to grow naturally. Five sea-view rooms were created indoors, providing living enjoyment within spaces ranging from 45 to 90 square meters. At that time, alongside the natural attributes and sea views, with a total of 22 guest rooms, a sea-view restaurant, and a small gym, it became one of the longest-lasting guesthouse projects in Shuanglang’s history. The brand emphasized the concept of a comfortable and relaxing vacation experience, which was established through this transformation.

Less brings the better

With the new demands of vacation living, contemporary residential experiences emphasize the full sensory experience, comfort, and richness of the environment. Especially now that guesthouses and hotels have become an integral part of destination travel, people desire the freedom to enjoy various functions within the indoor spaces, even without stepping outside their accommodations.

Based on these considerations, the designer conducted structural improvements in the renovation. The primary focus was on addressing the limitations of the existing spatial structure. Instead of making significant changes to the building itself, the emphasis was placed on adjusting the number of guest rooms and sea-view rooms. After the renovation, the original number of guest rooms was reduced from 22 to 15, but the individual room sizes were expanded to 45-100 square meters. The designer believed that “space is the fundamental logic,” recognizing that modern travelers seek more autonomy and choice. For busy urban dwellers, this space allows them to fully indulge in the laziness and relaxation that come with a sea-view room.

The value of the hotel space lies in the pleasure of experiencing the stay, rather than just decoration and rigid partitioning. Therefore, the designer, in adequately large spaces, seeks to create a rich variety of living scenes. Aside from the necessary rest and balcony areas, 2-3 relatively independent small spaces are individually designated for sitting, lying, reclining, and enjoying solitary moments or sharing the unique scenery of Dali with family members – the wind, flowers, snow, and moon. In the largest sea-view guest room, the entire space is divided into multiple experiential scenes, allowing people to unlock various postures for “observing the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake” within the 100 square meters, while completely relaxing their minds and spirits.

Imagine spending a leisurely day here, waking up to the morning sun and birdsong from a peaceful slumber, dining with a view of the shimmering waves and lush greenery outside the window. You can nestle into the sofa, gazing at the sea and daydreaming, or completely unwind while reclining on a lounge chair, welcoming the evening sun. After the sunset, retreat to the depths of your room, sipping a glass of red wine, and watch the flames dance freely in the fireplace…

Indeed, the space embraces various possibilities, aiding residents to experience the beauty of Erhai Lake and Cangshan Mountains in different ways, as they seek their own moments of vacation bliss.

Connecting with nature and local

“The impression of ‘Yun7’ is a natural beauty that has been refined through time. The plain walls, natural materials, and warm tones of furniture and objects constitute the entirety of the space. Flowing light and shadows, a scent of flowers, and a gentle breeze become dynamic factors that stir emotions. The simple appearance is harmoniously embedded within a comfortable and warm atmosphere, a result of the designer’s philosophy of coexistence with nature.”

From an operational perspective, globally renowned resort hotels are all achieved through their reliance on water, pleasant temperatures, and diverse cultures. For residents and creators alike, this inspiration comes from the interpretation and refinement of nature and local characteristics. Designer An Jun has always excelled in using the vitality of plants to extend the design. The saplings planted here 12 years ago have now grown lush and abundant, becoming an irreplaceable landscape.

Hotels by the shores of Erhai Lake cannot do without the blessings of nature. The designer’s intention is to create unique landscapes for each room. In a not-so-spacious clustered area, striking a balance between ensuring privacy for the guests and meeting the distinctiveness of the landscape and lighting functionality becomes a challenge.

Here, plants serve a functional purpose, as the designer adds elevated platforms by each window to incorporate plants at different heights and densities. This approach enhances the relaxed ambiance of the guest rooms while also addressing the lighting issues. The plants and courtyard elements that the designer skillfully employs are also integrated into the projecting balcony outside the third floor. The entire balcony is covered with plants, immersing the space in greenery, light, and flowing water. As a result, not only do guests enjoy the view upon opening the door, but they also experience the scenic beauty right from within the room and through the open windows.

Removing intricate decorations and colors, returning to simple furnishings. The current lifestyle is about embracing a sincere, attentive, and distinctive aesthetic taste within this efficient minimalism. “Localization” does not mean merely using local objects for representation, but rather infusing them with new vitality in the space. For example, the fireplace, which has become an iconic presence in ‘Yun7,’ was creatively crafted by a local artist using traditional Dali blue bricks, red bricks, and flower tiles. It serves as a sincere invitation for visitors to understand the local culture.

The process of deliberating and selecting materials is also a continuous refinement of the designer’s ideas. At ‘Yun7,’ the designer adheres to the concept of “embracing the natural attributes when choosing materials and carrying the human touch during construction.” Natural materials are used as much as possible to achieve a genuine texture – stones, bricks, and coatings possess an unadorned texture, untouched by artificial carving. During construction, there is no deliberate pursuit of excessive refinement. Instead, the traces left by the craftsmen are preserved, ensuring that the space is not a cold entity but one that breathes and retains the vitality of the moment and the place, much like a living being.

Another Core Element: Light

Another crucial aspect of this design is the careful consideration and utilization of light. With its location along the eastern coast of Erhai Lake, facing west, the area enjoys beautiful natural scenery. However, it also faces the challenge of intense ultraviolet radiation due to the high altitude. How can this issue be addressed while maintaining aesthetic coherence?

Here, the designer has utilized a significant number of latticed doors and windows to address the burden created by the stacking of traditional curtains and blackout curtains, while also cleverly using the subtle variations of the lattices to solve the shading issue. As morning arrives, the visual senses gently awaken with the faint light, and people coexist with the changing moments of the daylight, rather than being completely isolated from nature.

As the sun sets in the west, the light filters through the lattice, creating dancing shadows that are carved into the space, bathed in the moonlight that fills Erhai Lake. This unique scene becomes an unforgettable memory. It is simple, yet rich and dynamic, embodying the moment of interaction between nature and the human spirit.

Human and space, New in old

“The vitality of a hotel is intertwined with the experiences of its guests.” Whether viewed from the perspective of a designer, operator, or user, this remains unchanged. A hotel should not only provide a momentary respite but also be a place where people witness beautiful scenery, meet interesting individuals, and create lasting memories through unique experiences. These irreplaceable moments carry people’s memories, making the hotel a place imbued with positive and spiritual significance.

What the designer hopes to see is that when people step into this place again, they will find everything still familiar and comfortable, except that the plants have become more lush, the trees taller, and the flowers more abundant.

The true connection between people and the hotel better reflects and highlights the value of the design. The concept of “everlasting renewal” means that the space becomes a vessel that carries nature and emotions, welcoming new vitality and wonderful experiences, anchoring them once again, and sailing towards the future.
