Yudao Studio:The site is located on Double Happiness Island, situated on the south bank of Xiamen Bay, facing Xiamen Island across the sea. It is the first artificial island for commercial sea use approved by the State Council. Covering a total area of approximately 2.2 square kilometers, the island boasts a long outer coastline and a calm inner bay water system. A 5.2-kilometer circular slow walking trail runs through the whole island, offering views of Xiamen Bay’s seascape and the ecological waters where Chinese white dolphins inhabit. Developed by China Merchants, it is a coastal leisure destination integrating ecology, culture, tourism, sports and vacation.

The island already has several popular cultural, tourism and leisure destinations under development, with a plan to activate other zones across the island through a dot-style development content matrix. This project takes the near-bay land sports area, non-powered activity area and water sports area as a cluster to revitalize the Double Happiness Island Sports Cluster, serving as a rivet linking the future development of the surrounding inner bay areas.

First Impression of the Site

The site slopes from north to south toward the inner bay with a drop of about 6 meters. The side adjacent to the road is lined with decades-old Casuarina equisetifolia windbreak forests, forming an excellent green screen for the inner bay area. The interior of the site is open, flat and fully visible at a glance. The waterfront side features a natural riprap revetment, which has stabilized after years of sedimentation but has large gaps between stones. The design challenge is to intervene in the transformation without losing the natural style and integrate organically with the existing site to present the scene.

Decades of port and industrial cluster development in the development zone have left a large number of steel products and facility components to be reused. After the initial site survey, we planned to connect the scenes with industrial symbols of the port and wharf in the site, combining the natural wilderness state of the artificial island to create a unique sense of place for this sports cluster destination.

Exploration of Possibilities

Returning to the site itself, we carried out the layout planning based on the sports types planned by the operator. After multiple rounds of discussions with the owner and operator, we confirmed the cluster layout of land sports area + non-powered activity area + water sports center, and planned specific activity contents. Spatially, it can form dot-style links with future content, connect better content interaction, and adapt to the needs of phased development.

How can we maximize the potential of this site to achieve the highest composite utilization rate of the project? Among different business formats, the spatial forms provided by the site shall be planned with different enclosure and management methods to meet efficient operation requirements; meanwhile, each operating unit shall be enabled to make the best use of the surrounding scenery and terrain to the greatest extent, so as to achieve the effect of “optimal landscape”.

Based on the terrain featuring higher roadside edges and lower waterfront areas, we horizontally divided the site into three zones and optimized the elevation hierarchy. This ensures that each operational unit, leveraging the terrain’s height differences, enjoys views of the inner bay, while also enabling the fastest and most efficient access to every operational unit from the main plaza area.

Design Exploration

Following feasibility discussions in the preliminary planning stage, the two-dimensional layout of the overall content was ultimately determined. Three operational units are interspersed in areas of varying elevations, enabling visitors to interact seamlessly through linked operations and a ticketing system.

Land Sports Area

This area is arranged adjacent to the tall casuarina forests along the roadside. The building at the entrance serves as an activity center and also a trendy gathering store for a sports lifestyle. By utilizing the height difference between the building and the site, enclosed spaces for teaching and salons are formed. Meanwhile, thanks to the elevated site, the entire sports ground can be conveniently and intuitively viewed from inside the building.

With a concise box-like form, the folded sloped roof echoes the undulating contours of the site’s dynamic movement, creating a prominent presence at the entrance. The extended lightweight roof also serves as a gathering spot for activities, pauses and spectatorship within the site. Through grey spaces, the extremely lightweight building expands into rich extended interfaces, allowing the three expanded sides of the structure to accommodate different functional layouts and achieve efficient and intensive spatial utilization. Integrated with elevated steps, it enables visual interaction between indoor and outdoor areas, granting operators inside the building better views for efficient management.

Non-powered Activity Area

In the initial planning of the Non-powered area, we hoped that the site would need to take into account both the high-elevation areas and its own landscape facades, as well as provide a sense of depth in vision. Upon entering, visitors can immediately feel the attraction brought by the site and the play equipment. Therefore, in the middle of the site, we used a large activity lawn of approximately 2,000 square meters as the base, which accommodates the layout of the venues and content on both sides. The large lawn also serves functions such as hosting events and content releases for the operator.

As an important visual focal point of the Non-powered area, we plan to use recycled materials combined with the port’s memories to create an “icon tower” that integrates play and interaction, visual prominence, and memory preservation. It needs to be relatively tall, fun, and appealing to children. During the design process, we made multiple attempts, ranging from open forms to enclosed spaces, and from symbolic landmarks to artistic installations. Finally, by integrating a set of repurposed cement silos, we formed the core play installation of the Non-powered area — the “Double Fish Can”. Here, there is an observation deck elevated by height, a combined slide that runs from the platform to the sandpit, and interactive equipment shaded by an overhead floor. At the lowest level, there is also a circular water play tray symbolizing the shape of Double Happiness Island, intended to be a perfect spot for children to enjoy themselves to the fullest in summer.

The “Double Fish Can” utilizes the site’s height difference to create a comprehensive play area and a sliding and climbing zone that extends toward the sandpit. Children weave and play through the undulating terrain on the site, experiencing the joy of topography; they also explore upwards, climb and slide downwards, and enjoy water interactive installations in the overhead space. Elevated four meters high, the “Double Fish Can” serves as a site landmark while providing an overhead play space on the lower level, designed to offer children a sun-shaded interactive playground for fun during the hot summer months.

Within the Non-powered play area, we adopt a “minimalist” design approach to maximize the use of terrain. By employing linear, regular geometric landforms, we create diverse spaces featuring valleys, slopes, depressions and other topographical features, allowing play units to form countless “surprise eggs” hidden within the terrain spaces, waiting for children to enter the site, explore it and discover joy.

Meanwhile, we have also designed a series of highly adaptable interactive installations that fit the undulating low hills in the Non-powered area. There are oversized trampoline clusters hidden behind earth slopes, tunnel passages winding through the low hills on the ground, seesaws and swings made by combining reused grab buckets into interactive devices, as well as small excavators in the sandpit area and check-in installations made of reused steel materials. Through design and reuse, these materials have been revitalized.

Visitor Center

The tourist center integrates multiple functions including tourist distribution, internal light meal operation, and storage. The building is divided into east and west sections by the central tourist passageway. Consistent with the adjacent comprehensive sports and fashion store, it continues to adopt a lightweight facade effect. With the help of the elevated site, it forms a white box-like structure floating above the green steps.

We have designed the main facade facing visitors as an open living room. In addition to ticket redemption, it provides a temporary space for rest and waiting, and reserves a poster wall for future scenic area activities to expand the information release interface. The inner side serves as a coffee business area, sharing a central island service counter with scenic area ticketing to form an intensive indoor functional service area, maximizing the indoor business space and providing more attractive areas for visitors to stay during high temperatures. Meanwhile, the gray space acts as an extended business area for the coffee shop, utilizing tiered grass steps to create a “lazy time zone” where people can sit or lie down.

Water Sports Center

Lined along the waterfront is the water sports center zone that hosts activities across the entire inner bay waters. The current plan is to develop a regional cluster focusing on water sports training, sports salons, exhibitions and displays, light meals and soft drinks, retail merchandise, equipment rental, and other related services. By making use of height differences, tiered platforms at various elevations are set up outside the building complexes. While distinguishing functional areas, this design maximizes the view of the inner bay scenery for different groups of users to the greatest extent. The dynamic atmosphere of sports participants also infects visitors, creating a vibrant scene of the inner bay’s water sports in its 1.0 version. In the future, there are plans to arrange more relevant business formats along the coastal area, further optimize and improve the activities and commercial atmosphere of the entire bay area, and provide visitors with richer content for participation.

Plant strategies

A sunset by the sea, an expansive view, and swaying reeds were our first impressions of the site. In the distance, the bustling city skyline of Xiamen, paired with the island landscape formed by natural primary succession beneath our feet, evoked a series of concepts in our minds, such as life and strength, freedom and release. Preserving the wild character of the site while ensuring a harmonious aesthetic and spatial structure under extremely tight cost constraints became the primary challenge addressed by the plant design. As a result, a scene reminiscent of a savanna—with open spaces, tall and gracefully spreading trees, and a carpet-like undergrowth of plants that grow freely and sway in the wind—became our ultimate design goal.

Following the monsoons and seabirds, Taiwan acacia has grown naturally on Double Happiness Island. Today, it continues to act as an ecological pioneer, bringing vitality to the island. Therefore, we hope to transplant Taiwan acacia from the land to be developed near the project site, preserving the memory of the island gradually becoming covered with life since land reclamation, and expressing respect for nature’s self-restoration ability.
