In 2011, due to urban development strategies, the production function of the Cigarette No. 2 Factory was relocated out of the urban area. Most of the buildings were left vacant, and the entire factory area was closed off, isolating it from the surrounding urban districts.

Spatial Strategy

Spatial Strategy 1: Open Park

The spatial layout of the entire park features three core plaza spaces, each with a distinct goal: to thrive with the city, to share with the community, and to enjoy with the park. We aim for each space to empower the city, community, and enterprises, providing citizens, staff, and visitors with a unique and comfortable experience.

Spatial Strategy 2: Open Street

To the south of the park lies a unique arcade street typical of native culture of daily life. To the north is the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Guangzhou’s most representative material cultural heritage. Situated between these two landmarks, the park symbolizes industrial upgrading and urban renewal.
The design aims not only to connect spaces but also to preserve and integrate cultural heritage, fostering harmonious development. The space has been structured in the form of an open block, with four distinctive themed streets.

Two banyan streets retain the lush green corridors formed by banyan trees, enhanced with highly recognizable orange arch-shaped street lamps, making these green corridors comfortable and distinctive.

Punk Street and Back Street, once grey and abandoned spaces, have been revitalised by reorganising the unique, colourful pipes of the original factory buildings. This redesign preserves the industrial culture while infusing the area with modern vitality.

Spatial Strategy 3: Open Workshop

Workshop No. 10 was originally an experimental cigarette-making workshop with a large, long skylight in the roof that allowed natural light to flood in and fill the space with charm. The renovation of the workshop revolves around this Corridor of Light.Beneath the skylight, we extended the green corridor to include a natural subtropical ecological garden. Sunlight and greenery bring the workshop to life.

Cultural Strategy

Cultural Strategy 1: Holistic Order

The Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, situated opposite the park, features a traditionally symmetrical layout. The paving design of the plaza continues this parallel sequence. The overall paving language of the park not only echoes and extends the language of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall Plaza but also naturally emerges in the parks streamlined and orderly industrial language, resonating with the architectural spaces. This integrated relationship within the urban area fosters a harmonious coexistence.

Cultural Strategy 2: Life Under the Banyan Trees

Recreation under the banyan trees is one of the most iconic scenes of Lingnan life. The original paths of the site are flanked by dense banyan trees, creating natural green corridor. The design aims to preserve all the existing banyan trees on site. The staircase of Workshop No. 10 winds around the banyan trees, creating a multi-level circulation space, while new commercial platforms extend outward around the trees. Shops are arranged with outdoor seating areas under the banyan trees, allowing visitors to enjoy the comfort and leisure of life beneath the canopy. This creates a unique living scene in the New Lingnan open block.

Cultural Strategy 3:Symbols of Memory

We strive to preserve the unique spatial characteristics and symbolic memories of the site as much as possible, integrating new functions and languages that resonate with the core of traditional culture. Following the principles of urban renewal micro-renovation, we aim to create a brand-new outdoor spatial system, establishing the style of a ‘New Lingnan Open Block.

By capturing key elements from the existing site and refining the language to construct functional landscapes, we integrate spaces and connect the entire area, creating unique representative symbols and spaces. Each element is designed to endow the space with functionality and engage closely with users, becoming lively and memorable components.
