Story-filled back alley of the Bund

Shandong North Road, a branch of the Bund Street in Shanghai’s Huangpu District, starts from Suzhou Creek in the north to Nanjing East Road in the south, with a total length of more than 400 meters. The area hosting Shandong North Road has a history of more than 100 years: a tight road network and continuous street facades, with a mix of high and low modern and contemporary buildings, embodying the typical style of an old town. Before the renovation, compared with many well-known roads nearby, Shandong North Road was just a road that silently served the local community and was not well known to outsiders.

Aerial view of the Shandong North Road block

We started our research on the project through the “Shandong North Road Block: 10-Minute Community Life Circle Action Plan” campaign. Shandong North Road block comprises eight sections that spread out on both sides of Shandong North Road as the central axis. It was the earliest gathering area of banks in Shanghai, where a large number of warehouses and Shikumen alleys were distributed. Around 1990, parts of the old area were demolished and a variety of high-rise buildings, both residential and office, were built, slowly forming its current skyline.

Regional analysis

Shandong North Road has been very busy in its daily life. In addition to the surging crowds in the rush hours in the morning and evening, there are a large number of takeout and express delivery men hurrying here every day, and tourists taking taxi to Nanjing East Road will also drop off nearby. There are about 20,000 local residents and migrants living here, as well as nearly 100,000 registered companies and a large number of office workers. Even with such a superior location and passenger flow, there are only a handful of life retail shops on both sides of Shandong North Road, and the lack of supporting facilities in the block is particularly prominent.

The multiple needs of diverse people and the relative lack of block supporting facilities are the main contradictions of block development

In the 14th Five-Year Plan, Huangpu District of Shanghai puts forward the goal of “building an international metropolitan center with world influence” for the development of the Bund. Shandong North Road Block, as one of the few reserved plots between the Bund style protection area and the urban renewal area of Beijing East Road, is listed as a pilot item of the “One Street and One Road” project in 2023 by Huangpu District. The main Shandong North Road has become a top priority.

Systematic block renewal action plan

Our entire team is very excited about doing block renewal in such a core urban location. In our initial competition proposal, colleagues from the planning, architecture and visual design sectors came up with creative ideas for the revitalization of the Shandong North Road block from their own professional perspectives. Our plan focuses on the theme of “10-minute community life circle” in Huangpu District, and gives the thinking from problem analysis to solutions, covering planning support, traffic organization, parking suggestions, planning of business renewal, and the possibility of space transformation.

Our plan focuses on discussing the divergence between the current business types along the street and regional appeals of Shandong North Road block, and proposes to introduce more supporting services for residents, surrounding business people and tourists from the planning level, and further improve the elderly care and cultural facilities in the block. We also put forward three action plans: “optimize the slow traffic space system”, “activate the pocket public space” and “improve the functional quality of the block”, to fully tap the potential of the outdoor space on both sides of the street and create more slow traffic spaces to attract people.

Street public space framework design diagram

In the discussion stage of the competition, most people imagined that the result of the renovation was that the problems of insufficient supporting space and narrow roads would be solved quickly, and various young business forms and business atmosphere would come with it. In our plan, we not only suggested widening the sidewalk, but also made a bold imagination of expanding the commercial outdoor area, burying the overhead lines, and increasing shade trees on the street. We even redecorated all the storefronts in a fully open form in the renderings.

The idea of widening and reusing street public space in the competition scheme

Ties”: public art wall scheme for Gezhi Senior High School

Hard work pays off. Our efforts were recognized by the competition organizing committee and the Bund Sub-district. Our scheme won the winning award of the block competition, and we were invited by the sub-district to participate in the implementation phase design of Shandong North Road. Hearing the good news, our colleagues in the design team were all eager to get into action. We put forward the slogan of “making good design to the Bund”, and began to deepen the drawings with enthusiasm. However, as we completed the submission of the drawings and the construction team began to enter the field, the feedback of different departments on the drawings came one after another. We realized that the real design work just began.

Complex renovation limitations and challenges

The first to question it was the traffic authorities. Since narrow roads and crowded buildings are the congenital defects of the old town area, the width of the existing roadway is barely enough, so the traffic bureau firmly disagreed to reduce the width of the motorway. The idea of expanding the walkway was rejected by one vote. Then, the municipal management department proposed that multiple municipal pipes had been planned for the underground space of Shandong North Road, and there were no funds and space to put overhead lines into the ground on the project, so there was no condition to plant shade trees on both sides of the road. Just as we were about to revise the scheme, we got a phone call from the owner, who said that the business formats along the street could not be adjusted, and a number of shop owners refused to replace the original shop doors and windows, or remove the curtain doors, and asked us to go to the scene to communicate. A series of unexpected events unveiled rounds of on-site communication and design adjustments.

On-site coordination and communication

After several coordination sessions, we began to understand the complex operating relationship behind the shops in the old town area. A number of hardware stores had been operating in the place for more than 30 years. Despite changes in the surrounding businesses and impacts, they remained struggling to run their stores. As we did not consider the daily business needs of the hardware stores in our block renovation scheme, some store owners asked us straight out. In their repeated appeals, we heard a lot of unease with uncertainty and insistence on the status quo.

Regeneration scheme based on features of old town

Sponge transformation of sidewalks

Success is not always achieved overnight. After taking a closer look at the scene, we reconsidered the original intention and goal of the renovation action, and shifted the focus to the optimization of public landscape and public facilities to minimize contradictions with the shop owners. We believe that only when the public space order of the street becomes better, can the renewal of the block proceed from the inside out.

Most of the roads in the Bund area are more than a century old. They are very different from the modern municipal construction standards: the roads are narrow and hard. The distance between the buildings on both sides of Shandong North Road is no more than 10 meters. Having set up the two-way traffic lane, most of the sidewalks are only less than 1 meter wide, which is not enough for two people to pass in parallel. Besides, most roads are paved with non-permeable materials. In extreme weather, the drainage of the entire road relies on municipal pipe networks. Can the renewal of the old town area make it more comfortable to walk in the old road? Can it make the drainage of roads more resilient?
We worked hard on the profile of the original walkway. During the site inspection, we noticed the possibility of renovating the front space of Songbai Apartment. The platform was 80 meters long, about 1 meter above the ground. It was used as a temporary parking space for electric vehicles by nearby shops. If this occupied outdoor platform becomes a “sponge platform” that absorbs water and grows green, can it greatly improve the slow walk quality of this section of sidewalk?

After partially dismantling the original platform and reinforcing the foundation, we lowered the parapet to about 40 cm high along a side of the sidewalk. This height makes the narrow sidewalk have wider walking space, and increases the space for resting by the street. At the same time, we replaced the gravel fill inside the platform with a patchwork of landscaped flower pond, interspersed with the existing platform system. The material of the flower pond is made of the same granitic plaster material as the landscape along the Suzhou Creek, with several lengths from 1.4m to 2.8m and several heights from 0.4m to 1m, suitable for the planting conditions of plants of different sizes.

The pavement softened by the landscape after the renovation

To make up for the regret that there is no planting space for shade trees on the road, we build 10 flower ponds exploiting their height differences, and choose the evergreen maple trees. To balance the rich levels of landscape effects and low cost maintenance in the later stage, we select 12 kinds of evergreen plants with different heights and green shades for the flower ponds. The mixed planting of different plants ensures the positive effects of biodiversity, and creates a rich layer of streetscape with different forms, sizes and colors of the plants themselves. Finally, in conjunction with the municipal design, the sidewalk paving was replaced with permeable bricks, which together with our “sponge platform” form a rain-permeable slow walking path of Shandong North Road.

Reborn green garbage stations

The garbage station at the intersection of Shandong North Road and Ningbo Road undertakes the garbage collection task for more than half of the block. The 250-meter-long Ningbo Road is crowded with restaurants and food shops, which keeps a thick smell of cooking from morning to night every day. However, the plenty passenger flow also brings a huge garbage output, and despite the great freight volumes of sanitation trucks every day, it remains hard to meet the collection needs of wet garbage on the Ningbo Road. Besides, the temporary dump of waste in the warehouse station is also a point of daily dispute between surrounding residents and businesses.

The state of the garbage warehouse before the renovation

The renovated Ningbo Road garbage warehouse

Taking the opportunity of reshaping and optimizing Shandong North Road, the original waste warehouse was remodeled in the scheme: build a composite functional site while maintaining the original volume. On the first floor of the warehouse, a wet waste disposal unit is introduced, which applies the principle of biodegradation to process up to 200 kg of wet waste per day, turning the waste into planting nutrients and greatly reducing the pressure of garbage collection in the neighborhood. The second floor of the warehouse is transformed into a meeting hall. It is an event space with spacious views, which can be used as a community meeting room, and also as an ideal venue for activities and live streaming. The stairs of the warehouse spiral up to the roof terrace, which offers views of the surrounding area and the city landscape, and is the perfect place to cultivate the landscape with nutrients from the ground floor.

Strengthening and highlighting street public domains

Warm red public domains

The key of block renewal design is to build up a scene space worth stopping for through the combination of the transformable part and the existing surrounding environment. Shandong North Road has the advantage of adjoining the urban landmarks of Suzhou Creek and Nanjing East Road, as well as hosting the continuous flow of people in the Bund area. So we create as much urban landscapes to let people halt and observe the sights.

The colors of the block before the renovation were a mixture of a variety of old gray and yellow, and the public footpaths were often interrupted with private possession. In our renovation strategy, we mark public space domains with warm red, clearly defining the public spaces and extending them at different elevations.

Red materials highlight the public nodes of the block

Rest space retreated into the corners

We set up seats at the intersections of Shandong North Road with Ningbo Road and Beijing Road, especially in the positions where you can bask in the sun. By just backing down the size of a chair from the original platform, we create more scenes for pedestrians to stop and chat. It also reserves the possibility for the development of the surrounding businesses.

Seats at the corner of Shandong North Road and Ningbo Road

Light and continuous facades

The podium building of the Songbai Apartment is a group of two-storey shops. The space between the first and second floors is where air conditioner external units are placed. It is the most disordered area on the facade of the whole building. The renovation scheme adds a layer of perforated metal folding plates, like pulling open a layer of gauze curtain, to transition the facade color of the second floor with the warm public areas of the first floor. It further emphasizes the complete shape of the building.

Washed stones and wall lamps

There are always many people jogging at night along the banks of Suzhou Creek. We hope to introduce them to Shandong North Road. Therefore, on the one hand, we refer to the washed stone process used in the south bank of the Suzhou Creek, using recycled glass and gravel as the main aggregate, and attaching them to the outer surface of the flower pond. On the other hand, we take the flood light of the dotted wall lamps as a safety lighting at night, and arrange them in steps and corners, to achieve the effect of order, restraint, energy saving and avoid disturbing the people.

Building and spreading block brand

Brand image design and planning

Through years of practice, we find that the process of block renewal is also a process of block brand promotion. Only by letting more people know about the changes that are and will be happening, will it bring more opportunities to push it to continue to grow and get better.

The Shandong North Road LOGO design starts from the characteristics of the Shikumen architectures in the Bund area, and uses the decorative elements of Shanghai culture to depict the image features of the block with a sense of history and culture. In the use of colors of the brand, it echoes the theme of environmental protection and regeneration and green practice, and expresses the vitality of the old street with a mature green.

The design of Shandong North Road LOGO comes from the combination of Shikumen and Shanghai culture

Shandong North Road check point” for easy group shot

When designing the LOGO and placement for the Shandong North Road block, we specially considered the possibility of co-mirror of pedestrians with the LOGO, and set up “Shandong North Road check points” at several different height positions along the route.

Block brand derivative visual design

The promotion of the block brand is realized not only through changes of the hardware environment, but also through a series of soft activities, publicity efforts and media promotion. The future of Shandong North Road block is bound up with the culture and diverse crowds of the Bund area. We transform this future-oriented cultural feature into a derivative visual design in a series of urban activities, and open new ideas for the renewal of the old city with the creativity of visual design.

When night falls, Shandong North Road block is lit up with a set of lights leading to the Suzhou Creek. The warm lights illuminate the pedestrians along with the block itself, and also light up the new direction of the old town renewal here.
