Studio Guilherme Torres:Project takes living among the treetops with a suspended pool. Three of the four sides of the land are forested. It is difficult to find a space like this in the heart of the capital of Paraná. But this was the scenario that the architect Guilherme Torres faced when he first visited the land that would receive the Tree House, a residential project that represents a turning point for his office, which increasingly intends to bring technology in line with the sustainability.

The uniqueness of the terrain was essential for the creative process. “I had the idea of creating a suspended house. It was a decisive insight, and my job was to put it on paper”, he says. The reference for this first drawing was clear: the Glass House, a classic by Lina Bo Bardi.

There would only be 21 structural pillars to suspend the house, but a bureaucratic intercurrence during construction meant that the design had to be changed and went to its opposite extreme – this time, inspiration flirted with Villa dall’Ava, a house signed by Rem Koolhaas in Paris that has a “rain of leaning pillars”, as Torres describes it. Thus, 122 columns were added to the 21 that already existed, creating a forest of pillars below the house.

The residence creates two antagonistic moments of observation. Externally, it is the gable that draws attention. Its design was only possible thanks to an association of construction techniques that mixes the metallic structure with the concrete. The slope of the land also composes the project, making the house three meters above the ground at the lowest points and nine meters at the highest.

In the interiors, the main feature is immateriality, with a minimum of materials making up the palette. The 536 m² are equally distributed between the social and intimate areas and were designed for a family formed by a couple and two pre-teen daughters. The furniture is primarily composed of pieces signed by the architect himself, with exceptions for furniture by classic designers, such as Sérgio Rodrigues. The result is a refuge that takes place according to nature.

Just like the house itself, the kitchen also contrasts two moments: the technical part, which is hidden behind the wooden volume, and the welcoming part, creating an environment of coexistence added by the large rustic wooden counter.

The swimming pool on the upper floor was also born in the first insight of the project, thinking about valuing the coexistence with the surrounding nature. Functioning as a sculpture, it is suspended and has infinite edges, covered with black volcanic stone – following the proposal to use natural materials.

The landscaping was designed by the architect Alex Hanazaki, and dialogues with the appreciation of the topography designed by Torres. While there was a large garden area, a large part of it would be covered by the suspended house itself, with little sunlight – which would make it difficult to maintain the plants. “So I chose to create an arid garden, highlighting the contours of the land with a very architectural and contemporary design, with concrete lines”, he details. In practice, these lines form steps, filled with crushed stone, that lead to the highest part of the terrain. At the same time, the existing forest was also preserved, valuing its organic aspect.

Compounding with the garden is the gourmet area. The external part has a living room, integrating a fire pit built into a reflecting pool that goes around the garden. ”, adds Hanazaki. “It is a garden with a futuristic air, in which I represent elements of nature, such as the design of the topography and the design of a river, in a modern and architectural way”.
