Zinialand Design: Finding Design Opportunities in Supply-Demand Mismatch
Situated in the heart of the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, the project is located in Beijiao New Town—a pivotal node in the strategy for Guangzhou Foshan urban integration. With urban resources densely concentrated and rail transit networks intricately woven, the convergence of Foshan Metro Line 3 and Guangzhou Metro Line 7 provides swift connections to Guangzhou South Railway Station and the central districts of Foshan. On this dynamic land brimming with development momentum, the BUGU Island project is not merely a component of Shunde District’s blueprint for a modern, livable city—it also poses a profound inquiry into the very essence of public space.
As an early waterfront greenspace in Beijiao New Town, the site once offered a rare ecological asset to the region, thanks to its linear riverfront layout and dense canopy of roadside trees. Yet as the city has expanded, so have the evolving needs of its inhabitants. The high density occupation of surrounding communities has laid bare the inadequacies of this green space: aging facilities, tangled pedestrian flows, and a palpable decline in vitality. Residents’ diverse aspirations for outdoor socialising, parent child activities, and nature based learning now stand in sharp contrast to the outdated, monotonous offerings of the original park—a stark supply demand disconnect.

This supply demand mismatch ultimately devolved into spatial desolation. The greenspace became encroached upon by scattered small vegetable plots, footpaths were trampled into disorderly trails, and the area lacked any cohesive nodes that might encourage people to linger. Despite its sound ecological foundation, it had lost the warmth that a public space ought to possess.
The fundamental question of the project thus becomes clear: How can we reshape the public vitality and emotional connectivity of the place while respecting the native waterfront ecology and the mature tree communities?

Site Diagnosis: Four Clues and One Verdict
Before becoming a park, the site was a forgotten corner of the city, displaying four typical “primordial folds”:
1. The wildness and fragmentation of the water system – The river channel is tranquil, yet its banks remain untreated natural earthen and rocky slopes, overgrown with wild bamboo and shrubs. Beneath this untamed beauty lie hidden issues of soil erosion, safety hazards, and a lack of accessible waterfront paths—while the site must also accommodate flood‑discharge functions.
2. The pressure and stitching of the elevated structure – An intercity elevated rail transit line crosses over the water system, forming a stark “visual dividing line” and a potential “noise source.” Reconciling the three‑dimensional relationship among the residential neighbourhoods, the viaduct, and the river channel stands as the primary physical challenge.
3.The abundance and disorder of vegetation – The site’s vegetation exhibits the vigorous vitality typical of the Lingnan region: bamboo groves, wild trees, and wetland aquatic plants constitute an excellent repository of ecological germplasm resources. However, this unchecked luxuriance, lacking proper organisation, also appears chaotic and cannot be transformed into a pleasant spatial experience.
4.The fracture and indifference of the interface – Modern high‑rise residential buildings stand in stark contrast to the rough wilderness and the railway viaduct. There is a lack of transition between the residential areas and nature; the two life scenes are abruptly severed, and the overall interface suffers from a loss of distinctiveness.

We did not rush to offer answers. Instead, we observed the real behaviours of users at different times over an extended period. Temporal distribution, movement routes, spatial choices… daily slices layered upon one another, until the site’s genuine needs came into clear focus.
What is needed here is not a “work” to be looked at, but a “place” where people can arrive, stay, and return to meet again.
Design Strategy: Between Cut and Fill, Molding the Land’s Expression
The site was flat to begin with—no rises, no falls, no folds, and nothing to interrupt the sweeping view. A land without expression cannot anchor any spatial experience.
The first move in the design was to reshape the terrain using only the existing earth and stone on site. No soil was brought in, and none was taken away; all transformation happened within the site itself. In some places we built up, in others we excavated, carving out elevation differences through a balanced cut and fill operation.

The originally flat two dimensional plane was folded into ridges and valleys, with views either blocked or channelled, and paths either elevated or sunken. This is a corporeal spatial narrative. At the raised points, the line of sight is lifted above the treetops, re anchoring one’s sense of direction; at the sunken points, the view is contained, and the surrounding slopes draw attention inward. With every shift in walking, there is a dual transition in both perspective and state of mind.
Topography not only shapes experience but also silently orchestrates the flow of movement.

Spatial Narrative: Independent Fields Segmented by Micro Topography
Once the terrain was folded, the site fell into distinct zones, each a self sufficient domain with its own inherent structure and temperament.
1. Entry Woodland Transition
The entry woodland transition zone is the first spatial threshold from the urban interface into the park. A high, hilly transitional belt, densely planted with trees, constricts the view, slowing the pace of those who enter as they move through the undulating terrain. This gradual shift facilitates a psychological transition from noise to tranquility, marking the true arrival into BUGU Island.

2. Central Lawn
The central lawn is the most open public interface of the entire site. The surrounding raised slopes form a natural barrier, shutting out the clamour of the outside world. Here, only openness and quiet remain—a stage for community events, weekend markets, and open air gatherings, where all public life unfolds upon this very canvas. Along the lawn’s edge, stepped terraces naturally follow the contours of the slopes; and a shallow stream, running alongside the lawn, adds a dynamic border to this foundational scene.

3. Stream Wading
The stream wading zone unfolds along the edge of the lawn—a shallow, accessible stream that invites visitors to step into, rather than merely view from a distance. It is a tactile experience: the water flows gently, the pebbles are smooth and rounded, and the coolness and resistance felt under bare feet offer a direct, corporeal feedback.

4. Riverside Boardwalk and Ecological Revetment
This is the interface where the park enters into dialogue with the water.
The original river channel serves a flood discharge function. Given the site’s proximity to surrounding water systems and urban roads, the topographical strategy eschews traditional rigid retaining walls in favour of concealed gentle grass terraces, planted slopes, and multi layered ecological terraces to negotiate the elevation changes. By lowering the boundary terrain, a natural “sponge” ecological buffer zone is formed—one that gently dissolves the clamour of the adjacent urban road while simultaneously preserving visual permeability and scenic continuity between the interior grassy mounds and the waterfront.

Water adjacent, yet without wading — the “Safe Blue Network” and “Sponge Respiration”.
The higher areas are for strolling, while the lower areas absorb water, striking a balance between flood control safety and a water friendly experience. As one walks along the boardwalk, with grassy slopes and trees on one side and open water on the other, the gaze meets the water, yet the body always remains within the bounds of safety.

5. Woodland Climbing
Climbing apparatus are installed to take advantage of the elevation changes across the lawn terrain, allowing children to sense the slope of the land as they climb up and slide down. Climbing nets, balance beams, and rope bridges are arranged in response to the terrain, rather than being forcibly implanted. What children perceive is not man made play equipment, but the very angles and resistance of the earth itself.

6. The Realm of Modernity: Another “Microcosm” upon the Earth
Beneath the park lies a modern art space of distinctly different character.
Here, the earth is orchestrated into orderly rippling movements. Grey white striped paving flows like a quietly gliding stream, as if tracing the fingerprints of time. Scattered among them are spherical art installations in black, white, and grey, resting silently like planets upon geometric oases and rippling waves. They make no noise; they simply sit quietly under the caress of light and shadow, reflecting the sky and the swaying silhouettes of trees.

From a bird’s eye view, it resembles a “microcosm” condensed by nature and craftsmanship—cool and serene, yet touched with romance. It forms a subtle counterpoint with the grassy slopes above: one sinks downward into stillness, the other opens upward into vastness; one is an order of geometry, the other a freedom of growth. These two sensibilities coexist on the same land, neither disturbing the other, yet each echoing the other in quiet dialogue.

Sensory Design: Soundscape Modulation through Micro Topography
Terrain partitions space not only in terms of sightlines and movement—it also addresses two invisible forces: sound and visual perception.
An elevated railway passes along the edge of the site, bringing low frequency noise and visual intrusion. Our choice was not to block, but to reinterpret. On the side adjacent to the railway, the raised slopes themselves absorb and reflect low frequency noise, while the densely planted evergreen trees and shrubs on the slopes form a living acoustic buffer zone. As trains pass, the sound is progressively attenuated; by the time it reaches the park interior, it is no longer harsh—merely a distant event. Meanwhile, the visual impact is softened by foliage, filtering the coarse presence of bridge piers and concrete.
The same logic applies internally. The stream wading and climbing zones are placed in valleys enclosed by micro topography, where children’s playful shouts are absorbed and scattered by the slopes, rarely crossing the ridges to reach the woodland paths. What people seated on the paths hear, at most, is a distant, cicada like white noise. Though the micro topographic undulations are subtle, they are sufficient to effectively deflect and filter the paths of sound propagation.
Everyone can stay within their chosen sound environment, undisturbed by others.

Plant Philosophy: Naturalism from “Placement” to “Sowing”
In our approach to planting, we chose a longer yet more vibrant path—one that grows from seeds.
We preserved the existing wild trees and wetland aquatic plants on site. They are the land’s “original inhabitants,” whose root systems have long been deeply embedded here.
We introduced a carefully blended flower mix, with a colour palette of 40% white, 35% blue purple, 15% pink, and 10% green, all direct sown. White daisies and chamomile form the ground layer; cornflowers and nemophila create the blue mid tones; pink cosmos rise above; while gramineous species—Pennisetum and Stipa—make up 35% of the composition as the structural backbone, maintaining spatial definition even when not in bloom.

By June, the flower border had fully matured. Its roots, deeply anchored, endowed it with stronger resilience than transplanted seedlings, making it difficult for weeds and pests to invade. What is most moving, however, is the self seeding and natural propagation—where the unexpected and the surprising coexist. Those corners that deviated from the intended design ultimately became a testament to the land’s own expression.

The alternation of flourishing and withering is embraced as part of the landscape. Blooms are landscape, seeding is landscape, and standing withered is landscape too. The park is never empty at any moment—it merely looks different with each passing season.
The warmth of design ultimately resides in the subtleties that are easily overlooked.
1. Hardscape Yields: Leaving Gaps in Stone for Plants
The hard surface on the slopes is paved with stone—not uniformly sized slabs, but natural stones honed into irregular shapes and laid in a rustic, patchwork manner. The gaps between the stones are deliberately wider than usual and left unfilled with cement.
2. Stainless Steel Posts Embedded in Stone as Bollards
Natural stones are drilled to receive stainless steel posts, which retain their original silver grey finish. The ruggedness of the stone contrasts with the cool austerity of the metal, while the solid base rests firmly on the ground, requiring no disruption to the pavement.

3. Pet Friendly and Convenience Amenities
From the very outset of the design, consideration has been given to both pets and their owners. In addition, amenities have been thoughtfully placed in response to the daily rhythms of the surrounding residents, ensuring convenience in everyday use.

Long term Operation: Making Space a Vessel for Events
The true value of a living park lies in the vitality that continues to emerge through long term stewardship.
After its opening, BUGU Island responded to the original design intent with a dense and diverse array of community activities: Dragon Boat Festival mugwort handicrafts, Father’s Day graffiti, a Song style tea ceremony gathering, sunset lawn concerts, open air cinema … Families and young people alike have found a sense of belonging here. What stands out even more are the “Pet Birthday Parties” and “Paddle Board Half Day Camps”—the former tapping into new lifestyles through pet friendly socialising, the latter activating the site’s waterfront resources. Neighbourhood markets, intangible cultural heritage performances, and other community oriented cultural events have infused the park with a warm, vibrant community life.

Epilogue: A Design Commitment for the Future
In the design practice of BUGU Island, we confronted the fundamental contradiction between the “flat uniformity” of the original greenspace and the complex demands it was meant to support. The design strategy began with a vertical reconfiguration, reshaping the spatial framework through a micro topography of “inner valleys and outer mounds”; replacing rigid revetments with ecological terraces to achieve a柔性缝合 between land and water; employing direct sown planting to cultivate seasonally rich natural landscapes; and optimising the soundscape experience through precise topographical modulation.
The undulating grassy mounds are not a pretence to adorn the earth, but a gesture to welcome the morning dew and the traces of running feet. The retreat of the waterfront is not a means to sever space, but an invitation for wind and light to find a gentler resting place. As the lines on the drawings have become the winding paths and grassy slopes of BUGU Island, we firmly believe that this park—nurtured into being by time, the land, and its residents—will, in its most authentic and fitting form, carry the emotional bonds of the community and the vitality of public life.
The place is at ease, and so are the people within it.
It may not be a “work” to be looked at, but it is surely a “place” where everyone can arrive, stay, and return to meet again. This, then, is the best answer we can deliver to time.
