HANCS: A stone can be a large mountain, Stone can be a building material, a border and a shelter, Stones can be decomposed, and interact with water、sunlight and air to give birth to life. When discussing the choice of stone or greenery with the designer, it was like going back to the debate about this point in the design briefing. I don’t think landscape design is a matter of spreading greenery all over the place, that would be greening at best. I would rather see the new green seedlings of the stone after the wind and rain, the natural evolution; the ore texture reflecting different angles in the daylight; the magnificence of mankind building a civilisation on a new star, and the wonderful expression of all the occupants travelling moving between the future and reality.

Use the succession of pioneer plant community

Pioneer plants are the first plant community to appear in a community succession. They generally start from lichens on rocks or bare ground, because lichens are the pioneer community of xerophytic primary succession, and the strongest vitality in the plant world. According to the test, lichen can grow at a low temperature of minus 273 degrees, so it can grow in deserts and the North Pole and even on the backs of sea turtles. When transforming saline-alkali land and sandy land, suitable plant species are selected according to the specific conditions of the climate and soil to establish pioneer plant community so that barren land can be gradually transformed into land where plants can grow.

With the process of rock weathering and soil development, pioneer community such as lichens and mosses first appeared on the rock surface, which were later replaced by herbaceous community, scrub community and forest community in sequence, and this succession of individual plant community, which are interlinked in historical development, constitutes a successional series. Perennial grasses: mosaic Miscanthus, fine-leaved Miscanthus, wolfsbane – perennial herbs, preferring warm, moist and well-lit conditions Cold and drought tolerant, soil-independent, infertile plants: pine, fir, oak, poplar and locust tree are drought-resistant, cold-resistant, infertile and suitable for well-drained sandy soils, these plants are usually extremely vigorous. the method of building ecological communities with pioneer species is called the species framework method, where light-loving, easily dispersed herbaceous plants are usually used as pioneer species for an ecological community to be restored. They appear early in the succession and can change the soil quality of the area, attract animals and create the conditions for the recovery of other plants and animals; this stage is called the pioneer stage.

Water transforms the desertification landscape and slowly recovers its vitality

The flowing water can exfoliate the rocks to produce alluvium and rocks on the river bank, using the canyon terrain to collect rainwater system, the introduction of the water system causes the destruction of the rocks with weathering and exfoliation. Weathering is the destruction of the rocks in situ, the river valley develops into a wide valley floor, the sediment accumulates on both sides of the river bed on the river floodplain, the rainwater accumulates repeatedly, the alluvium layer thickens to form the waterfront floodplain, and the floodplain is formed to open the grassland landscape growth.

The old pits have been mechanically mined for a long time, resulting in soil erosion, severe desertification and the failure of flora and fauna to regenerate; in order to slowly rejuvenate the exposed rocks and turn the pits into a unique geological experience space, the Pit Garden was created to seek out the natural wild interest.

Wilderness landscape design based on nature

The natural growth and decay of the canyon, the succession and development of the plant community, the naturalistic approach to landscape design, is full of originality, diversity, exploitation and serendipity. Following the natural wilderness landscape, Piet Outdolf, the Dutch god of weeds, has created a wilderness seasonal garden that presents the beauty of wildness and decay, presenting the natural appearance of plants through the changing seasons. In the same way that there is beauty in both glory and decline, the process of restoring the landscape of the pit garden is gradual, evolutionary and sustainable, as we restore the biodiversity of the ecosystem and show the charm of its natural growth.

An architectural style and polar landscape that resembles a new planetary colony

The primary strategy for the landscape design of the Banyan Tree Garden is to express the changes of all things on the earth. The magnificent mountain cliffs, the movement of the stars, water elements, sunshine and streams transform the quarry into a budding plant habitat, like a planetary journey. The buildings reflecting the sunlight are a familiar images of human civilization, and the buildings climbing the rock form a new planetary civilisation, a warm space capsule isolated from the polar climate. The hot spring terraces overhanging the mid-mountain, looking up into the night sky and embracing the warm springs like the first human perches on the cliffs, and the architectural gardens where you walk at night are the best corridors to look at the stars.

A safe and comfortable habitat for primitive people looking for a place to stay

The hot spring area is roughly laid out in original stones, without finely carved decoration. The gift of heat from the earth’s core constantly gushing out with the spring water. The whole pool is not very large and just hold ten people, running around and playing in the caves is the primitive joy of children, soaking in the pool and looking at the endless sun-drenched rock walls of the valley, with the red sun slowly falling in at that end of the earth’s surface. After soaking in the hot spring, you can feel the energy of nature flowing around the body, making a return to the original self.

The hot springs are opposite to the cliffs of the valley, and feel the most primitive arbitrariness

It is possible that underground heat was an important source of energy for primitive people at a time when fire had not yet been discovered and there was no way to obtain heat by man-made means. Now we are so used to gas stoves or electric heating that we have forgotten the importance of nature’s energy. When the hot sun goes down to the horizon, to combat the cold air, we soak in the hot springs like monkeys in the snow, using the heat from the earth’s core to warm our bodies, so close and interdependent is nature’s energy with us humans.

Silence, anticipation, wonder, exploration of an alien world known to none

Creating a life starts with exploring “know nothing”. The site was originally a mining site where workers pulled the surface with a single axe to create a rock formation exposed 30 meters below the surface. The initial appearance of the star is rarely seen in the usual way, which means that there is naturally with wonder everywhere. The building is designed to build on the rock mass , It is a starting point for exploring the paths, a cabin for peeking into the polar regions, and we are the intergalactic traveler who set up camp.

The aim of the Nanjing Garden Expo is to create a ‘Garden of Nanjing’ that will always be in bloom, creating a world-class garden complex through a combination of gardening art + ecological cultivation + multiple functions; technically adopting an ecosystem, practising the concept of Double Urban Repairs, restoring the ecological substrate and building an ecological corridor. The Banyan Tree is located in the Longquan Quarry in Tangshan, which was first built in 1990,large areas of gray and bare cliff rocks are the status quo of the base, and the architectural form is set against the mountain and blends into the rocky walls of the mountain forest. The main purpose of the landscape is to retain the landscape features of the industrial site and to recreate its appearance, so we have incorporated the images of misty cloud pools, suspended views, half mountain cliffs and multi-dimensional space scenery into the landscape design, form as half mountain cliffs suspended in mid-air, shape as half interior and exterior space integration, like a garden in the sky above a sea of clouds.
