WMLA:The Mountain-to-Sea Trail Initiative, as Shenzhen’s pioneering exploration in high-quality sustainable development within its role as a demonstration pilot zone, exemplifies the city’s commitment to the provincial Green Beauty Guangdong initiative. By linking regional green spaces dominated by mountain forest ecosystems, the plan establishes a “three-route system” for long-distance trails. Among these, the Peng Trail—a continuous 200-kilometer backbone route traversing from west to east, connecting ridges and coasts—was designated in 2024 as one of China’s “Top 10 Featured Outdoor Destinations” by the China Mountaineering Association

Seamless Transition from Urban to Wilderness

As Shenzhen’s earliest developed urban district, Luohu maintains a unique ecological pat-tern of “half landscape, half city.” The wilderness trails serve as vital connectors for citizens to engage with nature. Benefiting from its exceptional location, the Donghu Park MountainTrail-Liantang Port Line stands out as one of the most accessible wilderness paths between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.

Spanning approximately 2 kilometers, the trail’s southern entrance is just 150 meters from Exit B of Liantang Port Metro Station, enabling a seamless shift from bustling city-scapes to serene woodlands. The northern trailhead begins at Mingcui Pavilion along the Wutong Greenway, passes through Donghu Park, and connects with Section 10 of the Kunpeng Trail—offering citizens a convenient gateway for advanced exploration.

Design begins where nature guides the hand, each stroke flowing with its essence.

Understanding and respecting nature, we avoid large-scale construction. By eschewing heavy machinery and concrete, we create trails that return to nature using locally sourced materials.

A Pathway Connecting with Nature

Built using traditional handcrafted methods, these trails minimize human impact while preserving the land’s original contours. We employ locally available materials like wooden stakes and stones to maintain ecological integrity.

Syncing with Nature’s Rhythm

We work with the land’s natural drainage and root systems, installing 45°-60° water bars along slopes to disperse runoff while maintaining existing soil paths—preventing muddi-ness without disrupting the terrain.

Amplifying Wilderness Beauty

Designing wilderness trails doesn’t always mean adding elements. Sometimes the most powerful interventions are invisible, revealing decay’s unex-pected usefulness while mag-nifying the wild’s inherent beauty.

Dialoguing with Nature: Chronicling the Mountains and Forests

While the wilderness landscapes of Shenzhen may appear similar at first glance, each hiking trail possesses its own unique spirit. These trails yearn to have their distinctiveness discovered and to be endowed with a tailored “Chronicle of the Mountains and Forests.”

With the rigor of environmental educators, we meticulously document the fascinating flora and fauna, as well as the culturally significant landmarks along the trails, compiling them on interpretive signs—as if composing a chronicle for this very stretch of wilderness.

With the creativity of game designers, we connect the interpretive signs along the 2-kilometer route through exploratory missions, transforming the hike into an immersive, giant “adventure park” experience.

With the precision of picture book authors, we meticulously refine the text and illustrations on the signs, ensuring that reading them becomes as de-lightful as flipping through a vividly illustrated storybook.

With the sensitivity of landscape architects, we identify and preserve the unique features of the terrain, incorporating interactive installations that allow visitors to effortlessly engage with and appreciate the wonders of nature.

A Shared Cultural Bond Across Shenzhen and Hong Kong

The unique proximity to the border checkpoint, the connection between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, the Shenzhen Reservoir that supplies water to both cities, and the shared mountain wildlife and seasonal changes all converge to make this trail a pathway of cultural kinship between the two regions. The intricate ties and inseparable bond between Shenzhen and Hong Kong serve as the defining feature of this wilderness trail.

Gamified Interpretive Approach

We connect all interpretive signs through a game-like narrative, transforming the act of reading them from mere “learning” into completing “mis-sions” within an adventure. This turns a simple hike into an immersive and engaging quest that visitors find irresistible.

We preserved a natural tree arch spanning directly across the path and installed an interactive feature beside it, making “passing through the tree gate” a playful activity that delights both children and adults.

Vivid and Engaging Interpretive Content

As one of the few man-made installations along the wilderness trail, the design of the interpretive signs must remain unobtrusive to preserve the natu-ral ambiance. Yet, through meticulously crafted content, they leave a lasting impression on visitors.

The Story Behind the Trail

Past and Present

Hikers enter the mountains seeking communion with nature, yet often trample vegetation and carve unofficial paths for passage. A well-designed trail not only fulfills our sense of accomplishment but also reveals hidden natural wonders that might otherwise go unnoticed—discovered precisely through the process of trail construction.

Research

Every step along this path bears the imprint of sweat shed during meticulous fieldwork.

Construction

Using only manual labor and non-motorized tools, we built the trail following the “Three Zero Principles” (minimal disturbance to ecology, terrain, and history), enhancing its sustainability and integration with the environment.

Trail-building is both a philosophical and mathematical lesson taught by the forest. Every inch of this wilderness path represents a humble response to nature’s laws—not a conquest of the wild, but a guide back to nature itself.

Community Collaboration

“Collective building and sharing” has been our guiding principle throughout the trail’s creation and maintenance. We’ve engaged over 60 volunteer groups (including adults and families) to help construct log steps, install edge barriers, and mount interpretive signs along the Donghu Park Mountain Trail . Post-construction, we continue organizing regular clean-up events, inviting the public to jointly protect this shared space.
