XJ Design:The CPI Commercial Cluster is situated between the core ecological waters of Luhu Lake and the main commercial district of the Water Town, featuring a large spatial layout of wooded hills and lakeside terrain. Phases 3 and 4 are located in a tranquil forested hillside area, with a maximum elevation difference of approximately 10 meters. The nine original buildings of Phase 3 are terraced in staggered layers along the mountain slope, with roads meandering and connecting according to the topography. The five newly constructed shops of Phase 4 unfold sequentially along the foot of the mountain, maximizing the preservation of the continuity of the natural landscape.

In response to the complex vertical site conditions, the landscape design offers a multi-sensory three-dimensional circulation system that connects the staggered individual shop units into a cohesive pedestrian flow. From the lakeshore to the wilderness, set against the backdrop of CPI’s overall open park-like rustic ambiance, the landscapes of Phases 3 and 4 lean toward a more private and introverted courtyard quality, adding a sense of exploration akin to “a winding path leading to a secluded place” during the hillside stroll.

Spatial Layout: Deep Integration of Programming and Landscape

Phase 3 breaks away from the conventional commercial spatial logic of “emphasizing the front-of-house while neglecting the back-of-house.” Featuring mainly niche studios, lifestyle aesthetic retail, and specialty dining, each shop is equipped with its own inward-facing courtyard or slope-side outdoor seating area, forming independent, quiet, and private garden spaces. Leveraging the natural slope topography and existing trees, the site incorporates winding, relaxing walking paths and stepped bridge walkways that ascend through the woods as public circulation nodes, serving to channel pedestrian flow and transition between scenes. In terms of sightlines, the exclusive courtyard and outdoor seating areas of each shop intertwine with the public circulation nodes, allowing the commercial public spaces and garden landscapes to fully permeate each other. This provides merchants with ample flexibility while ensuring a highly consistent indoor-outdoor spatial experience. It offers a sense of exploratory wandering and meandering through a park, allowing “greenery” and user activities to permeate into every visible scene.

Landscape Scale: Human-Centric Long-Life Design

Abandoning large-scale grand landscaping approaches, the design remains firmly anchored to a human scale throughout, with long-term durability as the core guiding principle, ensuring that the landscape deeply aligns with the daily operational rhythms of the spaces it serves. In terms of spatial scale, the landscape environment is fully adapted to the architectural fabric of small-volume standalone structures—all landscape elements (plazas, grass slope gradients, seating retaining walls, planted enclosures, courtyard partitions, etc.) are kept within a comfortable range of human perception. Continuing CPI’s consistent philosophy of “design without over-design,” the focus is on the delicate textures that users can touch and perceive when immersed in the space. All human-scale design returns to functional essentials: low retaining walls protect existing trees while doubling as seating surfaces; cantilevered platforms also serve as display or resting surfaces; green borders simultaneously delineate private and public realms. The result is a stable, comfortable, enduring, and highly usable spatial foundation for both operators and consumers—a landscape that, through daily use over time, becomes a place where diverse groups can freely gather and discover value.

Material Dialogue: The Complement of “Grand Rusticity” and “Refined Intimacy”

The site employs a material dialogue of “grand rusticity + refined intimacy” to construct a dual-layered spatial quality that embraces both nature and commerce, achieving a perfect complement between a relaxed wilderness atmosphere and a refined commercial experience. The foundational materials of “grand rusticity” establish the site’s naturally relaxed structural backbone: permeable concrete paving and concrete retaining walls delineate a raw, unpretentious textural framework that defines the free-spirited, hillside character of the site. The selective use of wood decking, metal, and other materials extends the natural, relaxed ambiance while accommodating the refined experiential demands of the commercial spaces. Native plants serve as the soft carrier of wildness, complemented by naturally growing moss among the stone crevices. Eschewing artificial ornamentation, the design preserves the authenticity of natural wildness while exercising appropriate restraint—allowing the sense of the untamed hillside and the delicacy of commercial refinement to interweave and coexist in balanced harmony.

The completion and opening of CPI Phases 3 and 4 further perfect the commercial cluster’s pedestrian circulation system, connecting the diverse landscape resources of the hillside woodlands and the lakeshore to form a complete, seamless, and immersive looping experience. As people step into this natural domain, they instantly escape the urban hustle, effortlessly transitioning from city dwellers to visitors of the wild—immersing themselves in a naturally relaxed atmosphere.
