ab2.0: The second phase of Riviera Beach is an extension of the promenade with an amphitheatre, designed in 2020 by architectural bureau ab2.0 and commissioned by the Metropolis group of companies (Sochi). In 2021, the upper part of the embankment was reconstructed: the park area with its large sprawling trees was transformed into a modern public space, the project envisaged the clearing of the area of commercial stalls, and a shaded square with benches was designed. There is also a new ‘sunset viewpoint’ with deck chairs on the roof of the beach administration building.

In Soviet times, the Riviera beach was one of the most popular beaches in Sochi. Over time, the lack of comfortable pedestrian paths to the cape leading towards the beach has caused the infrastructure to decay. The only people who used to come here were residents of nearby houses and athletes who trained. Due to the city’s major urban development plans to build a pedestrian bridge over the Sochi River and create a complete walking route, the Riviera beach area needed reimagining.

The opening in 2020 of the first phase of the promenade with a “sunset amphitheatre”, a workout area and high-quality landscaping showed how much the city needed a modern public space: the place immediately became incredibly popular among young people, tourists and Sochi residents. In 2020, Riviera Beach was recognised as the ‘Number 1 beach in the Krasnodar region’ in terms of infrastructure and attendance. The ab2.0 project design made it possible to revive this space and restore its former popularity.

The main entrance to the beach and the main part of the promenade were transformed. The architects preserved the promenade area, provided for a clearing the space of kiosks, and revived the square. To the left of the main entrance, under the treetops, visitors can finally find a place for some peace and quiet. The new administration building has all the facilities for beach visitors, including a mother and infant room. There is a new viewpoint with deck chairs on the roof where families and groups can relax, sunbathe, watch the sunset, or admire the night sky.

An important task for the architects in redesigning the square was to preserve the existing centuries-old chestnut and cypress trees. The solution was to surround them with wave-shaped flowerbeds, repeating the existing planting outlines. Two new wide paths were designed to connect the key routes and provide a shortcut from the park entrance to the paths leading down to the beach. There is a drinking fountain at their intersection.

Winding paths branch off into different areas of the park from the two straight main trails. Off the main trail, you can rest in a quiet area on a wooden deck around a cypress tree, admire an olive tree in the shade or take a break on a bench surrounded by dense vegetation. The dominant combination of grasses and purple flowers elicit a feeling of sea waves, the coastal wind and a strip of surf.

To the right of the entrance is an open-air exhibition space with retro photographs created at different times on display for the opening. The exhibition may be modified and supplemented in the future.

Custom benches were designed for the curved park by the architects based on their drawings in Moscow. The lighting scenarios intuitively guide the pedestrian along a particular route. The two even lanes are illuminated along the way: you can see their beginning and end, like a runway. The paths, on the other hand, only have low-level lighting, highlighting ambient areas. At the radii, the lights intersect to form an intricate light pattern.
