01 项目背景PROJECT BACKGROUND
项目位于重庆市沙坪坝区石井坡街道中心湾社区花弄里小区，该社区前身作为特钢厂工人社区，历史悠久。社区中老年居民占比较大，多为退休工人，对于社区活动有较高的参与积极性。“时光不弃”花园选址于居民楼之间的一处土坡，占地面积34㎡，与周边场地高差约为4米，以楼梯相连。这里是居民们日常出行的必经场地，但由于环境消极、蚊虫滋生而被闲置，社区居民对场地的改造意愿强烈。
The project is located in Huanongli residential quarter, Zhongxinwan Community, Shijingpo Street, Shapingba District, Chongqing, which was formerly used as a Chongqing Specially-made Steel Factory workers’ community with a long history. The middle-aged and elderly residents in the community account for a large proportion, most of them are retired workers, and they have a high enthusiasm to participate in community activities. “Time Never Abandon” Garden is located on a soil slope between residential buildings, covering an area of 34 square meters, with a height difference of about 4 meters from the surrounding site, and is connected by stairs. This is the only place which must be passed for residents to travel daily, but it is idle due to the negative environment and mosquito breeding, and the community residents have a strong desire to transform the site.

2022年9月，重庆大学建筑城规学院肖竞与罗丹副教授带领“空间之间”（Inter-Space Studio CQU）营建团队在沙坪坝区住房和城乡建设委员会、沙坪坝区规划与自然资源局、沙坪坝团区委的组织协助下，联合中心湾社区发起“时光不弃”花园营建项目。
In September 2022, urder the organization and support of Shapingba District Housing and Urban Rural Development Committee, Shapingba District Planning and Natural Resources Bureau, Shapingba Youth League Committee, our team of Inter-Space Studio CQU led by Xiao Jing and Luo Dan, associate professors of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning of Chongqing University jointly launched the “Time Never Abandon” Garden construction project with the Zhongxinwan Community.

营建团队希望由花弄里居民参与共建一个美丽的社区花园，并使之成为一个可以储存居民情感故事和记忆、记录居民邻里生活的日记本。它也将是一个创意碰撞的艺术花圃，一个可以体验种植乐趣的迷你花园，一个促进所有共建者情感交流的多彩平台。
We hope that the residents of Huanongli will participate in creating a beautiful community garden, and make it a diary that can store the emotional stories and memories of the residents and record the life of the residents in the neighborhood. It will also be an artistic flowerbed for creative collisions, a mini-garden to experience the joy of planting, and a colorful platform to promote emotional exchange among all co-builders.

02 零废弃更新理念ZERO WASTE RENEWAL CONCEPT
在实地调研之后，营建团队被花弄里浓厚的社区氛围吸引：在这个大多数年轻人白天外出工作的社区，一些退休的老年人们围绕着社区自发形成了志愿服务组织，为社区居民提供各种帮助。与此同时，在对社区居民的访谈和问卷调查中，团队捕捉到了居民参与社区建设的热情以及在社区中情感交流的需求。因此，团队希望在“物质垃圾回收，生态环境保护”这一理念之上，对“零废弃”的主题进行延展，既实现【物质的零废弃】，也能实现【才能的零废弃】与【情感的零废弃】！
After the field research, we were attracted by the strong community atmosphere of Huanongli: some retired elderly people spontaneously formed voluntary service organizations around the community to provide various help to residents in this community where most young people go out to work during the day. At the same time, in the interview and questionnaire survey of community residents, we captured the enthusiasm of residents to participate in community construction and the need for emotional communication in the community. Therefore, we hope to extend the theme of “zero waste” on the basis of the concept of “material waste recycling and ecological environmental protection”, and realize not only “zero waste of material”, but also “zero waste of talent” and “zero waste of emotion”!

03 设计策略DESIGN STRATEGY
面对场地零废弃的更新目标和现存问题，营建团队从空间激活、功能植入和记忆焕活三个角度提出了花园的更新策略。
1）空间激活：借助高差打造分台立体空间 Spatial activation: Use the height difference to create a three-dimensional space
地块内部地势东南高西北低，有两根天然气管道由花园场地背面的高挡墙伸出，大致顺应着场地内原有的土坡坡度，以约45度角的形式横跨整个花园。因此团队决定增设一层平台覆盖燃气管道。
In the face of the renewal goal and existing problems of zero waste site, our team proposes the renewal strategy of the garden from three perspectives: spatial activation, functional implantation and memorial rejuvenation.
The internal terrain of the plot was high in the southeast and low in the northwest. There were two natural gas pipelines extending from the high retaining wall at the back of the garden site, roughly following the original slope of the soil in the site, and stretching across the whole garden at an Angle of about 45 degrees. So, our team decided to add a platform to cover the gas pipeline.

由于两层平台之间的交通空间会占据比较多的既有活动空间，且高差需使用土坡消解，可能会造成滑坡且植物不易在坡度较大的土地中生长，营建团队推翻了场地内部平台之间有台阶连通的方案，最终选择让场地内部平台之间不连通，以此拓宽场地深度来增加活动空间，并在西侧矮墙外部新建由南向北进入场地的台阶来丰富路径体验。这样可使一层平台相对较平坦，植物覆盖面积与人群活动面积更大，便于组织更多活动。
Since the traffic space between the two platforms would occupy more existing activity space, and the elevation difference would need to be resolved by soil slope, which could cause landslides and make it difficult for plants to grow in the land with high slope, our team overturned the plan to connect the platforms inside the site by steps, and finally chose to make the platforms inside the site disconnected to broaden the depth of the site and increase the activity space. In addition, a new step was built outside the west low wall to enter the site from south to north to enrich the path experience. In this way, the platform is relatively flat, the plant coverage area and crowd activity area are larger, and it is convenient to organize more activities.

2）功能植入：与社区功能互补的复合利用空间Functional implantation: Composite utilization space to complement the functions of the community
周边公共空间多以开放式的休憩空间为主，有个别具有小型活动、公共议事功能。为避免与周边空间相似，营建团队结合居民需求，最终将空间主要功能定位为园艺种植、情感记忆分享、创意艺术、小尺度的交流平台。由于空间尺度小，存在时间与空间的矛盾，因此花园在不同时间段承担不同功能。日常作为休憩与园艺空间，在社区举办园艺或手工活动期间可作为展览和活动宣传空间等。
The surrounding public spaces are mainly open rest spaces, and some have the functions of small activities and public discussions. In order to avoid being similar to the surrounding spaces, our team combined with the needs of residents, and finally positioned the main function of the space as a platform for gardening, emotional memory sharing, creative art, and small-scale communication.
Due to the small spatial scale and the contradiction between time and space, the garden performs different functions in different time periods. It can be used as a rest and gardening space in daily life, and can be used as an exhibition and activity promotion space during gardening or handicraft activities in the community.

此外，设计还着重考虑场所空间的适老性。由于社区内现存的特色空间强调工业气质，缺少亲和力，且居民以老年人为主，因此花园使用亲和材质（植物、碎石、木材等），在硬件基础设计（楼梯踏步、扶手、台层、座椅等）上考虑老年人使用尺度，贴合老年人生理特征。
In addition, the design also focuses on the aging of the space. Since the existing characteristic space in the community emphasizes industrial temperament and lacks affinity, and the residents are mainly the elderly, the garden uses friendly materials (plants, gravel, wood, etc.), and considers the use scale of the elderly in the hardware basic design (stair steps, handrails, platform floors, chairs, etc.) to fit the physiological characteristics of the elderly.
3）记忆焕活：承载“特钢记忆”和邻里交流的精神空间Memorial rejuvenation: Spiritual space to carry “special steel memory” and neighborhood communication
考虑到社区老年人群多为特钢厂旧职工或家属，团队在花园中设计能促进社区居民记忆分享、情感交流的节点，保留其对特钢厂的记忆与归属感。
原有污水井具有一定高度且由于密封不完全而存在臭味。但污水井作为寄托场地记忆的标志物，营建团队决定将其优化处理后予以保留：将污水井加高至与二层平台齐平，对井进行密封处理，设置为具有三层储物抽屉的【时光机】，作为居民记忆和情感交流的存储空间。团队希望居民在读取他人的记忆（物件、照片和故事等）之后，也能受到启发，自己动手存储记忆（过去的老物件、现在的照片和对未来的祝愿等），最终通过种下种子的方式来延续花弄里的未来。
用绳子在【时光不弃墙】边的管道上悬挂照片和便签留言，以便更加直观地讲述居民个人对于生活的理解、对过去的记忆和对未来的祝愿。团队希望，将记忆转化成为可读可观可展的景观，通过“展示记忆内容”的方式来延续花弄里的未来。
设置磁吸白板作为【花园公告板】，用于展示花园使用手册、活动公告、花园活动过程与居民生活照片，使花园的共建、共享特性得到更加直观的展示。居民通过花园公告板获取社区信息，也可以发布和分享信息，成为花弄里社区的BBS平台。
Considering that most of the elderly people in the community are former workers or family members of the special steel plant, our team designs nodes in the garden that can promote the memory sharing and emotional exchange of the community residents, so as to retain their memory and sense of belonging to the special steel plant.
The original sewage well had a certain height and was smelly due to incomplete sealing. However, as a marker of site memory, we decided to retain the sewage well after optimized treatment: the sewage well was raised to the level of the second-floor platform, the well was sealed, and set as the [Time Machine] with three layers of storage drawers, which was used as a storage space for residents’ memory and emotional communication. We hope that after reading other people’s memories (objects, photos, stories, etc.), residents will also be inspired to store their own memories (old objects from the past, photos of the present, wishes for the future, etc.), and ultimately plant seeds to continue the future of Huanongli.
Hang photos and notes on the pipe beside the [Wall of Time Never Abandon] with the rope, so as to more intuitively tell the residents’ understanding of life, memories of the past and wishes for the future. We hopes to transform the memory into a readable, observable and exhibitable landscape, and continue the future of Huanongli by “showing the memory content”.
The magnetic whiteboard is set as the [Garden Bulletin Board] to display the garden user manual, activity announcements, garden activity process and residents’ life photos, so that the co-construction and sharing characteristics of the garden can be displayed more intuitively. Residents can obtain community information through the garden bulletin board, and can also publish and share information, which becomes the BBS platform of Huanongli community.

04 社区参与COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
在营建团队看来，社区花园营建的核心是风景园林师、社区管理方、居民三者之间的协调。从方案生成、施工土建到共建活动的组织，均有居民参与其中，保证居民意愿的实施。在后续的营建过程中，邀请居民一起参与花园共建，既是对社区交往的复兴，也是对居民利益的保证。
花弄里是一个已经历过数次微更新改造的社区。社区居民对自己的家园感情深厚，且已经形成了成熟的社区志愿服务组织关系。居民自我管理、自我教育、自我服务的基层自治模式提供了实现本次花园共建的沃土。
方案生成过程中，团队首先根据实地勘察后对现场情况、社区历史背景等理解，拟出一份问卷来调查居民的需求和偏好、活动参与意愿与态度以及征求他们对花园的建议作为“社区专家”角度的补充。团队成员还前往花弄里社区对当地居民进行多次访谈交流，通过交谈进一步了解了他们对场地的看法与改造意愿。
In the view of our team, the core of community garden construction is the coordination between landscape architects, community managers and residents. From the plan generation, construction implementation and organization of co-construction activities, residents are involved to ensure the implementation of residents’ wishes. In the subsequent construction process, inviting residents to participate in the garden construction is not only a revival of community exchanges, but also a guarantee for the interests of residents.
Huanongli is a community that has undergone several community micro-renewals. Community residents have deep feelings for their homes, and have formed a mature community volunteer service organization relationship. The self-management, self-education and self-service model of the residents provides a fertile ground for the realization of the co-construction of the garden.
In the process of generating the plan, we first drew up a questionnaire based on the understanding of the site situation and the historical background of the community after field investigation to investigate the residents’ needs and preferences, willingness and attitude to participate in activities, and solicit their suggestions on the garden as a supplement to the perspective of “community experts”. Team members also visited Huanongli for many interviews and exchanges with local residents, and further understood their views on the site and transformation intention through conversation.

In order to introduce the concept of co-building a garden based on the previous analysis and to absorb the opinions of all parties, we organized an open discussion on the co-construction of the garden in the community. The members of the discussion included the resident representative of Huanongli community, the head of the subdistrict office and the director of the Zhongxinwan Community. There was a full exchange of views, which was used as feedback to adjust the final design of the garden.

秉承“零废弃物质、零废弃才能、零废弃情感”的更新理念，营建团队联合中心湾社区，结合居民们擅长的技艺与竞赛主题，策划了“时光不谢·共建”、“时光不谢·永绽”、“时光不谢·印记”等丰富多彩的联动工作坊活动，成为了本次花园共建计划成功的肥沃养料。

05 使用指引USER GUIDE
考虑到社区花园的公共属性，本项目需要尽可能地告知更多居民花园的使用方法，避免在实际使用过程中让居民望而却步。所以营建团队制作了花园使用手册，使用浅显易懂的文字结合插图来讲解，还会附上每个场景鼓励的和不建议的行为供居民们参考。形式为正反两面的四折页，印刷成本较低且便于广泛传播。
Considering the public nature of the community garden, this project needs to inform more residents about the use of the garden as much as possible, so as to avoid discouraging residents in the actual use process. So, we create a garden manual with plain text and illustrations to explain the garden, as well as the encouraged and discouraged behaviors of each scene for residents’ reference. The form is four folding pages on both sides, which has low printing cost and is easy to spread widely.

使用手册根据不同用途有以下几种呈现形式：在花园建造过程中以及剪彩开幕时，印刷成可手持阅读的尺寸发放到居民手中；印刷成较大尺寸张贴在花园公告板上，便于来往行人了解花园的使用细节；在线上平台展示电子版，用于在公众号等平台辅助花园宣传工作。
The manual is available in several forms for different purposes: during the construction and the ribbon cutting ceremony of the garden, it is printed in a size that can be read by the residents; Print it into a larger size and post it on the garden bulletin board for passers-by to understand the details of using the garden; The electronic version is displayed online to assist the publicity of the garden on platforms such as WeChat official account.

为保障花园持续运行，本项目搭建了一套花园日常管理与维护体系。中心湾社区基层组织负责与花园有关的活动组织与管理工作；“特钢贤人”服务社和红岩“帮一把”志愿者服务队等社区志愿组织主要负责花园的日常维护（例如从居民楼内挑水灌溉以及花园设施的协调维修工作）；营建团队提供花园后续使用建议（例如提供苗木更换表以便植物长势不佳时替换）；在场地对面的路灯处设置监控以防花园里的工具被偷窃。
In order to ensure the continuous operation of the garden, the project builds a set of daily management and maintenance system of the garden. Zhongxinwan Community grass-roots organization is responsible for the organization of activities and management related to the garden; Community voluntary organizations such as “Special Steel Sage” service Club and Hongyan “Lend a Hand” volunteer service team are mainly responsible for the daily maintenance of the garden (such as carrying water from residential buildings for irrigation and coordinating the maintenance of garden facilities); Our team provides advice on the future use of the garden (for example, a seedling replacement table to change the plant in case of poor growth); Set up surveillance at the street lights across the site to prevent garden tools from being stolen.

“时光不弃”花园是营建团队撒在花弄里社区里的一颗种子。居民情感的凝聚不止在花园的方案设计和建设营造过程中，更在其建设完成的后续使用之中。我们希望这个花园可以成为居民未来邻里交往和情感交流的场所。如今，人民城市愈发强调公众利益的保证，在社区层面，越来越多的微更新在社区中得以实践，并表现出了良好的效果；而社区共建花园，也作为一种重要的社区微更新手段具有重要的示范意义和推广价值。
“Time Never Abandon” Community Garden is a seed that we plant in Huanongli.
