Atelier Pierre Thibault: A Residential project in the Portneuf region, “Le quai” is bathed in forest, bordered by a dense wall of hardwoods on one side and conifers on the other. This residence has been designed for lovers of natural spaces and the outdoors who dream of a place for contemplating and connecting with nature. To be consistent with this desire for connection while adopting a responsible approach, the architecture demonstrates the possibility of creating smaller homes in nature.

The concept is based on three distinct parts — the workshop, the house and the dock — which complement and enhance the total experience. Residents and visitors are led to wander between these three spaces, slowly discovering them and investing in the whole site, which gives the home a sense of great amplitude. This stroll begins with the blacksmith shop between the street and the house, creating a buffer zone between them. Expressing itself as an independent opaque volume from the outside, it creates privacy for the house while accompanying the visitor to it. The front of the house is a long relatively closed wall, designed almost like a palisade from the entrance. The entrance door, a thin break in this facade, aligns with the sober axis of the blacksmith workshop. When entering the house, the eye is drawn to the landscape through the abundance of windows, accentuated by the contrast with the facade.

On a narrow sloping lot, the home’s light wooden frame rests gently on the rocky ground. It occupies an L-shaped plane on a single level, the living area reduced to a minimum without compromising spatial quality. This double objective is achieved through the use of simple traffic patterns and quality spaces that deliberately blue the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Accessible from each of the rooms, the adjacent exterior space effectively contributes to the interior spatial composition.

In two perpendicular wings, the project creates private and living spaces that have beautiful, varied views of the surrounding landscape. This particularly narrow plan offers a string of rooms and gleams with comfortable minimalism. Its big southern exposure windows and openings in the wall of built-in furniture to the north invite the eye to go beyond the walls and bathe the spaces in striking natural light. Completely made of wood, the interior walls provide a comforting, benevolent feeling in total continuity with the surrounding natural beauty. At the end of the living spaces wing, a screened room with a fireplace seems to extend the kitchen and dining room while offering a usable space for much of the year. Hugging the cliff, this room gives a sense of vertigo with its spectacular diving view.

The stroll continues along a steep path down to the lake and a dock stretching into the water. Completely disconnected from the other spaces due to the difference in level that makes visual breakthroughs between them impossible, the dock gives residents the impression of facing the vastness of the lake and gives them a lasting sense of amplitude when they return to the house.

As with all of the projects designed by the agency, a dialogue is created between the interior and exterior through the choice of materials, which promote continuity. Here this idea is expressed by the long roof overhang and the terrace that connects all the rooms. This large terrace, naturally incorporated without a railing, echoes the dock in size, the horizontal slats and its function, inviting contemplation of the last rays of the sun.  The whole concept blends into the surrounding forest thanks to the choice of natural wood siding, the colour merging with the tree trunks and soil. The whole project, both in intention and design, shows a deep respect for nature. It is proof that the quality of the spaces does not have to be sacrificed in modestly-sized projects.
