JTL Studio
JTL Studio:Located in the core of Hongkou District, Shanghai, the project sits within the vibrant heart of a modern metropolis. We choose to coexist with nature — to re-establish a connection with the natural world within the urban grid.Through undulating landforms and meandering, tranquil streams, we seek to weave nature back into the fabric of the city.Rather than a simple imitation of wilderness, the project constructs a deeper narrative, using topography, vegetation, water and pathways as its fundamental design language.Within this “urban forest”, a minimalist and contemplative living environment emerges — restrained in form, yet rich in inner vitality.
Threshold · A Spiritual Passage
The design seeks to establish a transition from the urban realm to a natural sanctuary through a rigorous axial sequence and ceremonial control of scale. An over-80-metre-long continuous folded colonnade forms a rhythmic spatial gesture along the eastern garden frontage. Together with a stepped and concealed entrance, symmetrical ceremonial water features, and a hotel-like looped arrival sequence, it creates a deeply immersive and enveloping arrival experience.
Defined by its monumental horizontal scale, the architectural portico establishes a transitional domain articulated simultaneously in both vertical and horizontal dimensions, generating a strong sense of spatial belonging. At its core, this spatial sequence operates through the precise orchestration of scale, materiality and planting, enabling a psychological transformation from public territory to private realm.
To pass through this threshold is to experience a gradual shift in perception — where visual focus moves from the urban fabric toward natural elements, and auditory conditions transition from traffic noise to the rhythmic presence of water. This sensory recalibration prepares the mind and body for a deeper engagement with nature beyond.
Immersion · The Natural Vessel
Passing through the entrance canopy, a 14-metre-high architectural void draws the gaze downward — revealing a dramatic three-dimensional sunken courtyard with a vertical difference of approximately seven metres. As a contemporary interpretation of the “Oriental Rhythm” within the Pure Series product line, this courtyard translates traditional garden wisdom through modern design language, condensing mountains, valleys and forests into a single spatial composition.
Due to the building’s fully elevated ground floor, a triangular visual corridor is formed when viewed from above. From any interior vantage point, the valley garden unfolds like a flowing three-dimensional scroll painting, truly realizing the classical spatial ideal: “the scenery shifts with one’s movement, and wherever the eye rests becomes a living painting.”
With a depth of approximately seven metres, the valley garden generates a strong sense of immersion and enclosure. The sunken courtyard is no longer perceived as a conventional underground space, but rather, through layered water features (such as forest streams), a floating teahouse and a moss woodland, it becomes a quiet, centripetal “natural vessel” that converges toward its core.
The spatial experience is intimate yet expansive, restrained in scale yet rich in layers.Traditional garden techniques are reinterpreted through “borrowed views”: the floating teahouse and the opposite resting terrace frame each other as reciprocal visual compositions, creating a dialogue between sightlines and functions.“Screened views” and “filtered views” subtly regulate the rhythm of movement — for instance, along the descending path toward the water, partial visual obstruction generates moments of surprise and discovery at turning points, evoking the poetic sequence of “a hidden turn revealing a sudden clearing.”Every step becomes part of a carefully choreographed spatial narrative, where unexpected fragments of nature unfold through deliberate design.
Vertically, the landscape adopts a terraced sectional strategy, distributing functions across multiple levels. The enamel-finished stair becomes a key connective element: its materiality and tread proportions are precisely calibrated, resolving height differences while reinforcing the ceremonial rhythm of movement.
Here, the interface between architecture and landscape is redefined.A 15-metre-high elevated ground floor enables visual continuity between the sunken garden and interior spaces, allowing natural elements to penetrate inward while architectural space extends outward, ultimately forming an organically interwoven whole.
The senses are gently activated:vision is soothed by dense groundcover greens and the moist sheen of stone surfaces;hearing is enriched by cascading water and the subtle rustling of leaves;touch is awakened through incidental contact with rugged rock textures and soft fern foliage. Planting establishes a complete, forest-like ecological structure — from towering canopy trees to layered understory and groundcover — allowing the passage of seasons to leave tangible traces within the site.
Coexistence · Organised Emptiness
The concept of coexisting with nature at the Jinmao Hongkou Demonstration Area seeks to explore a state of “organised emptiness”, creating a mountain forest sanctuary within the urban core — a place capable of accommodating both body and mind.Rather than pursuing visual complexity or formal spectacle, this design strategy emphasizes precise spatial restraint and deliberate organisation of elements, allowing natural processes to express themselves and human experience to deepen.
This approach operates on three levels.First, the precision of elements: every water feature, every tree placement, and every stone composition has been carefully studied and refined, enabling natural elements to appear in their essential form.Second, the blurring of boundaries: through water infiltration, plant migration and material transitions, conventional distinctions between landscape and architecture, hardscape and softscape, artificial and natural are gently dissolved.Third, the introduction of time: the design anticipates processes such as plant growth, stone weathering and water sedimentation, allowing the site to evolve continuously and cultivating a living sense of temporality.
We believe that limited physical elements, when engaged with natural processes, can generate infinite spatial experiences and spiritual resonance. On this land in Hongkou, Shanghai — regardless of how the city lights shift and flow — Jinmao Hongkou continues to construct an immersive terraced mountain forest, guided by the ethos of coexisting with nature. As winter gradually recedes and spring approaches, within this woven realm of city and landscape, nature becomes the everyday backdrop, and poetry quietly grows with every pause and every step.
