GLS is focused on the design of contemporary landscapes, which we understand to be fundamentally intertwined with architecture, urban infrastructure, and natural systems. Working from a studio in San Francisco’s Mission district, we design places of simplicity and spatial clarity, typically with complex site planning issues, a connection to nature and often with an architectural component.
We have a multi-disciplinary office culture and work closely with clients to give meaningful form to their aspirations by integrating interior and exterior spaces and materials, reinforcing spatial ideas through horticultural design, and solving problems associated with difficult sites and new ecologies.

2175 Market Street
The landscape of this street-facing residential area subverts the dark and narrow sense of the original triangular site, giving people a fresh and elegant visual impression. The sparse and pure shrubs are matched with the unified foxtail asparagus, and the white floor material echoes the building like a soft package, which instantly isolates people from the outside world and precipitates people’s thoughts.
The courtyard is located above the hotel parking lot, and it is not suitable for a large number of plants due to the structural covering. The choice of birch forest just brings a subtle atmosphere to the mural of local artist Ben Eine on the opposite wall. The irregular planting pond, combined with the seats, makes the whole courtyard look more simple and clean, without tall trees and close groups of green plants, and the mottled delicate leaves stand in front of the line of sight, which gives people a thin and hazy feeling and makes people explore the murals on the wall.
On the roof, the cleanliness of the ground space is continued, and the lighting is embellished at the same time, and the space is refreshed with white masonry materials. In line with the actual needs of the venue, party furniture, leisure hammocks and barbecue fireplaces are added, instead of blindly imitating the lush natural landscape, with a wide view, giving people a modern city that is completely different from the ground.
388 Fulton
RHAA worked with Kaiser Permanente and SmithGroup JJR to develop a new medical campus in Dublin to serve the Tri Valley area. The new 40 acre site is being developed in 3 phases with the first phase consisting of a MOB medical building and a Cancer Specialty Center. Working closely with SmithGroup JJR and Sherwood Design Engineers, RHAA developed a concept that celebrates storm water conveyance as gardens. This not only connects the site to the historical geography, but it also provides a framework for a series of therapeutic and wellness garden rooms.
Here, as an element running through the whole project, dark weather-resistant steel brings a unique atmosphere and appearance to the natural flowing courtyard and roof garden in the center of the city. The waterway design and details of the ground floor courtyard have been treated in a unique form, which has both architectural aesthetics and life functions.
The biological zone in the ground floor courtyard is not only a part of the main landscape, but also a part of the infrastructure. Customized rainwater pipes outside the building connect the ditches in the courtyard. The steel drain conveys water all the way to the rock splash block, and then it is filtered by gravel to form a pollution-free biological canal.
For the roof platform, wind protection measures are taken in consideration of the high-rise wind. The high parapet, cypress swaying in the wind and perforated steel pavilion all play a certain role in adjustment. People can sit on single chairs, sofas and loungers everywhere to enjoy the magnificent scenery of San Francisco and relax.
What’s more worth mentioning is that the project is located in the center of San Francisco. In order to advocate a car-free city lifestyle, one of the design strategies is to replace the original parking lot planning with a one-to-one safe bicycle parking area.
Edwin M. Lee Apartments
In San Francisco, there is relatively little shared community space, and Edwin M. Lee Apartments is a park-style residential landscape for low-income families and veterans. Even if the building is not exquisite and expensive, the landscape creates a quality living environment for users, which is relaxed and comfortable.
As the first project in the city that combines veterans and family housing development, the design focuses on the sustainability of integrated communities and diverse housing models. In order to greatly reduce the homelessness of veterans and build a multi-generational and multi-ethnic community, and everyone can have equal direct contact with nature.
The community is located on the site of the former San Francisco railway station, only a few blocks away from the growing UCSF campus. Instead of leveling the site and reattaching the landscape, the designer eliminated the height difference with a Z-shaped barrier-free passage on the basis of the steep site, which not only added more natural interest to the pedestrian route, but also brought rich scattered scenery to the single atrium space.
