Compartment S4 ：Sensorium Park a contemplative blend of historical preservation and ecological sensitivity, located in the serene pine forests of Uttarakhand, India.
What was once a neglected, overgrown British-era cemetery dating back to the mid-1850s has now been thoughtfully transformed by Compartment S4 into a meaningful public space for reflection and sensory discovery. The Uttarakhand Government envisioned an accessible public site, and the design team embraced a more nuanced interpretation—one that honours the land’s layered and often undocumented history while safeguarding its fragile ecosystem.

During early excavation, multiple graves were uncovered, possibly linked to the First World War, yet without traces of archival identity. This absence of documentation introduces a profound sense of reverence, making its preservation even more critical. The interventions remain intentionally minimal: carefully laid pathways and sensitively restored elements ensure the natural landscape and historical significance remain paramount. The goal was to revive the space without overpowering its quiet dignity or disrupting the existing flora and fauna.
以一段身心之旅为设计理念，引导参观者同时思考记忆、生命和自然。修复后的石门，在现代金属结构的巧妙衬托下，为过去与现在的对话奠定了基调。蜿蜒的石径自然地穿过森林，随着每一处装置的出现，逐渐揭开这片土地的故事，为参观者带来片刻的静谧探索。
Guided by the notion of a journey, physical and metaphysical, the design invites visitors to reflect on memory, life, and nature simultaneously. The restored stone gate, framed subtly by a contemporary metal structure, sets the tone for this dialogue between past and present. A winding stone path organically meanders through the forest, unravelling the story of the site as each installation emerges as a quiet moment of discovery.
在感官公园，历史并非仅仅是被观察，而是通过感官被体验。一座镜面小屋融入森林，营造出一种如梦似幻的视觉体验。一口巨大的竹制风铃将自然之声与人工之声交织成和谐的旋律。芬芳的雪松木、可食用的浆果园、触感丰富的森林纹理、镌刻的标牌以及凿刻于天然涵洞中的石凳，共同构建了一个令人沉浸其中的环境。旅程的终点是一个象征生命轮回的生动装置，引人深思存在、联结以及时间的必然性。
At Sensorium Park, history is not merely observed; it is experienced through the senses. A mirror-clad cabin dissolves into the forest, creating an illusory visual encounter. A monumental bamboo wind chime merges natural and crafted sound into a unified melody. Fragrant deodar wood, edible berry gardens, tactile forest textures, etched signages, and stone seating carved into natural culverts collectively create a deeply immersive environment. The journey culminates in a vibrant installation symbolising the circle of life, inviting contemplation on existence, connection, and the inevitability of time.
这一转变在颂扬生命和记忆的同时，也引发了一些关键问题：
• 在后殖民时代背景下，我们如何看待殖民时期墓地的遗留问题？
• 此类场所能否在不削弱其历史特性的前提下，发展成为包容性的公共空间？

• How do we navigate the legacy of colonial burial grounds within a post-colonial context?
• Can such sites evolve into inclusive public spaces without diluting their historical identity?
• Does reinterpretation revive forgotten narratives—or risk overshadowing them?
Sensorium Park does not assert itself loudly. Instead, it offers a poetic restraint, allowing history, nature, and human presence to coexist gently. It stands as a reminder that restoration is not only about recovering the past, but also about opening space for dialogue, introspection, and future meaning.
