ArCONNECT Architects:  Two Distinct Charms and Scales of the Site

The site is situated outside a rural village beneath Cangshan Mountain, occupying an isolated, ancient farmstead. This parcel of land is elongated east to west, with limited depth from north to south. To the north lies Shuangyuan Creek, one of Cangshan’s Eighteen Streams, enveloped by dense forest. Amidst the babbling brook and verdant foliage, there is a subtle sense of serene woodland tranquility. To the south, expansive farmland stretches out, revealing the undulating silhouette of nineteen peaks of Cangshan Mountain, offering a breathtaking vista that evokes the poetic sentiment of “plucking chrysanthemums beneath the eastern hedge, leisurely gazing upon the southern mountains,” embodying a vast pastoral landscape. The terrain seamlessly blends the dual characters of “mountain forest” and “rural idyll.”

Within this locale, one can simultaneously perceive two distinct natural scales. The first is the “intimate scale,” characterized by an abundance of natural elements: to the west, a pond and a shaded avenue; the main building area dotted with poplars, blue-leaved trees, cypresses, and eucalyptus; a small walnut grove extending into the farmland on the south; and towering eucalyptus trees lining the creek on the east and north. The second is the “mountain-water scale,” with Cangshan’s southern face unfolding in a classical “broad and distant” vista, evoking a grandeur that spans the heavens and earth. From the west, two or three peaks among Cangshan’s nineteen are framed by tall trees and the pond, remarkably reminiscent of the “Stream-Travelers” scroll of the Northern Song Dynasty, presenting a rare “lofty and distant” scene.

Earthy Stone Walls: Reshaping Internal-External Bonds Through the Site’s Context
The original red brick and rudimentary lightweight steel structures within the site pose significant safety hazards. Consequently, the new construction must be confined within the footprint of the existing buildings, allowing for restoration and reconstruction on the same site. The design begins with a focus on how to reawaken and enrich the dynamic relationship between the architecture and the natural landscape. Under the premise that the building’s overall outline remains unchanged, the challenge lies in transcending the traditional indoor-outdoor boundaries and blurring the lines between architecture and landscape, thereby integrating the myriad natural elements—large and small, within and beyond the site—into an immersive spatial experience.

The fundamental framework shaping this new spatial relationship is the “Great Earth Stone Wall.” This wall weaves through the architecture and landscape, facilitating seamless movement between indoor and outdoor spaces, with varying heights and depths. While maintaining the building’s perimeter, the Great Earth Stone Wall extends the perceptual boundaries of the architectural space, creating courtyards with distinct public and private layers, and redefining the spatial interplay between interior and exterior. On this “spatial skeleton,” the pitched and flat roofs are designed to grow organically according to their functional needs and the interior spatial requirements, forming an expressive topography.

The creation of this new spatial order relies on two principal “forces” derived from the site’s connection with the surrounding mountains and water: the “broad and distant” perspective of Cangshan to the south facing open fields, and the “lofty and expansive” view of Cangshan’s western face toward the pond and grassland. Leveraging these dominant forces, along with the distribution of large trees, the walnut grove, and the pond—rich resources within close proximity—the design unfolds into two primary experiential sequences.

The first sequence draws upon Cangshan’s “broad and distant” perspective, beginning within a semi-enclosed courtyard and extending from north to south. The courtyard’s native trees, lush shrubs, and flowing water evoke the woodland atmosphere by the creek. The tea pavilion at the courtyard’s corner seamlessly integrates with the space, while a lightweight steel corridor links the surrounding areas. In the southern part of the courtyard, a slender, transparent garden living room is flanked by large sliding doors, inviting the experience from the interior to flow outward into the walnut grove. Under the shelter of the walnuts, visitors relax and enjoy views that gradually open onto the expansive farmland and the majestic Cangshan peaks, culminating in a panoramic vista of the water pond and the distant mountain range.

The second sequence harnesses the “lofty and expansive” perspective of Cangshan’s western face, unfolding from east to west. It begins with an interior dining space featuring soaring ceilings and a lowered eaves to block the western sunlight. Moving westward, a semi-enclosed, open grassy lawn faces Cangshan, set amidst stone walls, large trees, and architectural elements, forming a segment of axial composition. Continuing westward to the water pond, the building recedes, revealing Cangshan fully embraced by clusters of trees reflected on the water’s surface, capturing another unique “lofty and expansive” realm of the mountain on the site.

A Home Beneath the Sloping Roof
Building No. 1, designated as the “Farmhouse,” originally presents an L-shaped silhouette. We have interwoven the four-pitched roof with a two-tiered stepped flat roof, harmonizing with the existing boundary constraints. This structure serves as the primary living area for AKA and his family. The entrance hall, open staircase, upper corridor, and attic on the third floor are interconnected by the pitched roofs, creating a distinctive spatial experience. Skylights and traditional east-facing “tiger windows” usher in natural daylight and dappled bamboo shadows, enriching the interior ambiance.

Building No. 2, known as the “Sunken Lounge Bar,” was initially conceived as an open pavilion. Eight steel columns are concealed within short walls at the midpoints of each side. Leveraging the cantilever of the pitched roof, the four corners are fully open, with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that can be completely tucked into the short walls. The floor of this space is sunken by approximately 0.7 meters, producing a pronounced sense of enclosure. The central area rises loftily, while the low eaves surrounding the sloped skylight roof add an extra layer of shelter. On the east side, a double-layered fireplace creates an intimate gathering space, where seated visitors, lowering their gaze, can fully admire the distant Cangshan Mountain as it appears beneath the modest eaves.

Manor Hotel,Wandering Between Gardens and Landscapes

Within the estate hotel, architecture merely serves as a conduit through which guests perceive the essence of nature. The true soul of the hotel resides in the gardens, towering trees, flowing streams and ponds, meadows, farmlands, Cangshan Mountain, and the hues of clouds and mist—every natural element that can be sensed within this landscape. These components resonate like distinct voices within a symphony, their harmonies shifting as visitors wander, observe, and dwell within various spatial scenes. Each moment evokes a unique vacation experience, allowing individuals to gradually unwind amidst layers of natural embrace. The tension and tranquility that define this estate hotel stem from the intricate interplay of diverse scales of natural elements—interwoven, collaborating, reversing, and progressing in a dynamic dance of relationship.

The guest entrance is located at the most eastern part of the site, nestled within a tranquil grove of eucalyptus trees. The reception is housed within a vine-covered greenhouse amidst the trees, where aged wooden planks evoke a rustic, farm-like atmosphere. Navigating between the lush plants, visitors’ minds and bodies begin to relax, immersed in the natural serenity.

Flanking the main entrance are undulating curved stone walls that gradually narrow, leading into a shaded porch beneath a black lattice canopy. Circumnavigating a large-leafed plant around the corner reveals a quiet inner garden, accompanied by the gentle sound of flowing water. At the garden’s center, a pitched-roof tea pavilion opens at the corner, seemingly floating above the water surface. Entering the pavilion, one sits low and close to the ground, creating an intimate space. Though modest in size, when the corner sliding doors are opened, the entire courtyard becomes an extension of the tea experience, enveloped in the gentle unfolding of plants and natural elements layer by layer.

The inner courtyard, semi-open and semi-enclosed, creates a layered spatial experience, crucially connecting it to Cangshan Mountain through the transparent garden living rooms on either side. These elongated spaces, with full-height sliding doors, transform into a luminous, delicate void when open, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior. Sitting in the garden living room, one can gaze northward back into the courtyard and teahouse, or look southward over the walnut grove, with distant Cangshan Mountain framing the horizon.

The soaring dining hall introduces a different sequence of natural experience. Its 8.7-meter-high ceilings imbue the dining ritual with a sense of ceremony, tempered by the low eaves of the pitched roof, aligning the grandeur with human scale. Throughout the day, soft natural light filters in through skylights and south-facing “tiger windows,” casting shifting shadows that dance with the movement of the trees. Outside, a lowered deep eave extends over the sliding doors; seated beneath it, the “lofty” vista of Cangshan’s deep ridges unfolds along the nearby lawn, ruinate stone walls, and large trees, extending outward to the distant peak of Orchid Peak, three kilometers away.

Following the lawn through a low gate in the stone wall leads westward into the farmland’s domain. At the far end of the expansive lawn lies the largest pond on the site. Walking along the shaded path beside the water, the surroundings gradually transition to garden and distant mountains. This wandering between garden and mountain landscape ultimately culminates in an immersion into the boundless natural wilderness deep within the farm’s core.

Plants, Gardens, Courtyards, Farms: Embodying a Natural Lifestyle in Dali

Along the shores of Erhai Lake, visitors indulge in fleeting poetic romance; yet, what truly anchors the soul is the pastoral tranquility at the foot of Cangshan Mountain. Here, courtyards, gardens, and lush vegetation form the fundamental fabric of Dali’s indigenous way of life. The estate’s guest accommodations ultimately place visitors amidst serene courtyards and verdant flora. The entire estate comprises only six rooms, each endowed with its own private garden sanctuary. The boundaries of these rooms extend beyond interior sliding doors; the courtyard and garden serve as the true living spaces for each guest, fostering an intimate connection with nature. The proprietor, AKA, with his passion for plants and handcrafted details, establishes the internal aesthetic tone—imbuing the natural lifestyle with refined elegance.

Plants, gardens, courtyards, and farmland collaboratively forge a novel expression of Dali’s natural way of living. Here, both leisure and daily life unfold in a deliberate, unhurried abundance. Secluded tranquility, boundless nature, and a long-lost sense of ease perhaps represent the most authentic experience one can encounter in Dali. It may also be the very “healing” sought by urban dwellers in their quest to reconnect with a primal serenity.
