UP+S:Today, as digital technology empowers remote work, the workplace has transcended geographical boundaries. When work activities can take place anywhere, physical office spaces must go beyond their traditional functional positioning. By shaping experiences, forging connections, and endowing meaning, they need to reconstruct their irreplaceable appeal as places.

Alibaba Center · Hangzhou Future Park, also known as Qincheng Park, adopts the “WORK x Park” model. It innovatively integrates diverse urban functions—including work, life, social interaction, consumption, and culture—without boundaries, weaving a daily space that is non-hierarchical, open, and fluid. This model not only creates a vibrant flow of integrated experiences but also transforms the office environment from a single functional destination into a life hub that attracts people to stay and immerse themselves willingly.

Context of the Times and Design Response

The design commenced in 2021. At that time, the pandemic had reshaped social economy and lifestyles: remote work and hybrid work models were on the rise, and the office was no longer merely a collection of workstations. Instead, it was gradually shifting toward facilitating collaboration, fostering cultural identity, and providing experiences beyond what could be obtained at home. As the boundary between the virtual and the real grew increasingly blurred, people’s yearning for a sense of authenticity, human connection, and relaxation became ever stronger.

Within this context, the design of Alibaba Center · Hangzhou Future Park transcends the mere implementation of a singular office function. It represents a comprehensive exploration into the future of workplaces. Aiming to break from the traditional park design logic—which prioritizes efficiency and excessive functional zoning—the project adopts a fresh perspective. It shifts towards a more universal and contemporary spatial design, ultimately seeking to reshape the authentic experience of people within the place.

Project Overview and Building Site Context

Located in the core area of Hangzhou Future Sci-Tech City, the project covers an area of approximately 4.8 hectares with a total construction area of 220,000 square meters. It includes 18,000 square meters of commercial space, 130,000 square meters of office space, and a total landscape design area of about 50,000 square meters. As the starting section of the “world-class vibrant urban central axis”, the surrounding area gathers the headquarters of many technology enterprises such as ByteDance, VIVO, and OPPO, forming a dense office population and a younger consumption atmosphere.

Adhering to the concepts of green, openness and sustainable development, the building layout introduces the quantum community concept — with 30m×30m as the basic module, it constructs flexible and collaborative office units. These units step down progressively along the building and open to the central landscape garden, fully integrating the 360° panoramic view with the natural conditions of the waterfront park and extending to the adjacent Ali Park. The building adopts organic curves in the human-scaled areas, subtly blending into the surrounding nature and leaving abundant room for landscape interpretation.

Boundless Integration: Building a “Valley Living Room” for Urban Interaction

The site boasts excellent natural endowments:

• Buildings are scattered like stacked “mountains”, with roof gardens as the ” peak”.
• Surrounded by water on three sides, it forms a green peninsula and a unique natural external interface.
• Adjacent to a park, it nurtures an inherent outdoor living atmosphere.
• Drawing inspiration from valleys, the building features three-dimensional landscapes, flowing spaces and diverse views.

Alibaba Center · Hangzhou Future Park eliminates traditional enclosed boundaries. By opening up the ground-level commercial interface, it seamlessly integrates internal gardens, pedestrian pathways, and vegetation clusters with both urban public spaces and the adjacent Ali Park. Leveraging and blending into the park’s inherent recreational character, the campus transforms from a traditionally closed, exclusive domain into an urban living room that fosters diverse lifestyles and spontaneous social interactions, enabling a two-way exchange of urban energy and resources.

Strengthen the Valley Spatial Intent and Deploy an Exclusive Natural Color Palette

The design echoes the building’s valley concept, completing the spatial translation from form to atmosphere:

• The scattered towers stand like stacked “mountains”, with roof gardens as the “peak”.
• The sunken courtyard serves as a deep “valley bottom”, with overhanging eaves as “cliffs” — wild shrubs, cantilevered water features and cascading waterfalls enhance this imagery.
• The east-west internal street creates an experience of walking between two mountains, where gray spaces and colonnades resemble “caves” and “stalactites”.
• The office gardens are like quiet gorges flanked by “cliffs”, introducing a streak of skylight.
Ultimately, the campus becomes a navigable and sensory three-dimensional forest valley, achieving the transformation from architectural imagery to landscape artistic conception.

Combining springs, streams, waterfalls, rocks, fallen trees and cool-feeling vegetation, a valley color palette that conveys tangible natural textures, sounds and scents is constructed, offering an immersive full-sensory experience of being truly present. It shifts from “exhibitionist luxury” to “experiential extravagance” — a relaxed atmosphere rooted in real life traces, impossible to digitize, inviting people to return to nature.

Meandering Forest: An Organically Flowing Ecological Archipelago

Tall cedars filter dappled sunlight, Illuminating moss stains on rocks. River birch branches, pale as pristine parchment, await poetry. A winding path invites the start of a natural discovery.

The Meandering Forest prioritizes visual connectivity with the sunken spaces. By combining slender, towering bald cypresses and gracefully spreading river birches, it carefully composes a rhythmically undulating canopy. This design makes the verdant hues of the valley ripple and extend, creating a natural, mountain-like skyline that accentuates the three-dimensionality and vitality of the valley.

Whispers of the Empty Mountain : A Civic Theater in the Valley

Step into the oak forest, the theater’s melody drifts over. A little squirrel peeks out from the trees, curious about the wonderful things to come.

When visitors enter from the ground-floor commercial lobby, they should be able to quickly identify the path to the basement-level commercial area. Squirrel sculptures serve as key guiding elements: their dynamic tails are faintly visible among the nuttall oak trees, and as pedestrians approach the railings of the sunken courtyard, the full view of the little squirrels gradually unfolds, attracting people to explore downward.

The terrain design cleverly adapts to the elevation difference, forming a stepped audience area while providing sufficient soil depth for the growth of large arbor trees. At night, the colonnade’s gray space shimmers like a karst cave under the dotted lights, illuminating the vibrant stage in the valley.

Birdsong Glen: A Holographically Perceptive Mountain Stream Valley

The stream winds gently —wade upstream, following its course. Bird shadows flit across the glen; waterfalls cascade like scattered jade. By the stream, attend a valley tea gathering.

The Sky Pool cantilevers from beneath the first-floor link bridge, with a waterfall cascading from its edge. The water outlet is made of wood-grain stone with natural edges — its slightly undulating surface and staggered edges disturb the water flow, creating rich and organic folded forms that endow the waterfalls with vivid texture.

Facing the constraint of only about 400mm soil cover in the sunken space, the design constructs a stream valley vegetation environment through multi-dimensional strategies:

• Precisely locate large arbor positions based on sightlines at different heights, enclose the necessary root space with thin steel plates, and subtly conceal them through micro-topography.
• Use volcanic rock combined with hanging plants for transition where natural grading is insufficient.
• Vertically lay volcanic rock with trailing vegetation in road-adjacent areas to create a three-dimensional and vivid stream valley rock formation landscape.

The strict soil cover condition has instead given rise to rich vertical variations. Circulation routes, rest areas and outdoor seating spaces are distributed at different elevations, enhancing visual layers and intensifying the immersive perception of the stream valley.

The elevation difference also creates opportunities for dynamic water features. Three sections of the stream form 12 water surfaces at different elevations, shaping water curtains and flowing textures of varying widths; water-retaining stones and flow-dividing stones disturb the flow velocity to generate folds, enhancing natural momentum. The pool bottom is paved with 30–40mm variegated pebbles, dotted with 100–200mm pebbles to restore the texture of a natural riverbed.

The overall design pursues de-artificialization in all aspects, including spatial form, pavement, vegetation and landscape stone placement. With a relaxed and naturally interesting approach, it creates a landscape artistic conception as if being in a real mountain valley.

Cloud Reverie : A Shared Stage for Forest-Style Living

Climb the steps upward, reaching the mountain-top meadow. Gaze at the rolling peaks in the distance, sitting to watch clouds rise. A thousand scenes unfold, filling the heart with peace and joy.

On the south side of the forest stream valley, the curved and layered steps are modeled after flowing clouds in the mountains. They naturally guide people upward, gradually transitioning to the Cloud Sharing Plaza and the open lawn, and finally integrating seamlessly with the green space of Ali Park.

The “Cloud Bar” in the Cloud Sharing Plaza, as a small commercial space, houses brand stores and pop-up events, becoming a visual focal point and dynamic catalyst for activating the public area. The adjacent 1,200-square-meter large lawn serves as a blank canvas-style venue, providing a natural stage full of possibilities for corporate events, community gatherings and commercial operations, and accommodating a rich and colorful park life.

Operational Integration: Building a Multi-Functional Valley Commerce Hub

Within the framework of a natural valley’s spatial form, the design fully accommodates the operational needs of both campus commerce and corporate activities. Based on the planned distribution of commercial formats, multiple outdoor seating areas are precisely embedded within the meandering green islands, effectively enhancing the value of leasable units. Furthermore, by incorporating environmental control measures—such as shade and rain protection, summer cooling and mosquito repellent systems, and winter heating—the design creates a comfortable, all-season consumer experience for visitors.

Pathways, plazas, and lawns all incorporate ample flexible space with pre-installed utility connections, ready to support pop-up stores, themed markets, and large-scale commercial events. These design strategies not only enhance spatial adaptability but also transform natural settings into vibrant interfaces capable of hosting diverse content and sustaining ongoing operations—achieving an organic synergy between landscape and commercial value.

Epilogue

The landscape design of Alibaba Center · Hangzhou Future Park integrates into the urban fabric with an open posture. By dissolving the overt expression of a conventional office environment and employing an “un-designed,” relaxed approach, it blurs the boundaries between work, life, and leisure. Through crafting experiences, fostering connections, and imbuing meaning, it reconstructs an irreplaceable sense of place.
This project also signifies a pivotal shift in the philosophy of office park development: a transition from shaping “efficient workplaces” to cultivating “an ideal way of life.” The space is designed to attract people to linger, spark inspiration, and continuously stimulate the users’ most valuable creative potential.
