Growers Square is a 1980s office development centrally located between downtown Walnut Creek and a busy transit station. Within this highly walkable context, Groundworks Office redefined the character of the plaza by referencing important historical touchpoints and building a resilient landscape for the future.

The dynamic new plaza features integrated custom seating and shade structures that create opportunities for outdoor meetings, coffee breaks, and impromptu get-togethers. Our design adds clearer and more accessible paths of travel while increasing the overall plantable area to reduce rainwater runoff and bring a sense of life and place to the formerly nondescript office plaza.

Conceptually, our plan references the successive waves of people who once occupied this pristine valley. The central plaza’s distinctive black and white paving pattern is a direct reference to the pattern used in the crafts, tattoos, and ceremonial headdress of the Volvons, a band of the Bay Miwok Indian tribe.

The plantings, however, are more evocative of the Spanish explorers who came to the area in the 18th century. Though they may seem foreign to the area today, the plants we’ve chosen Boutelous gracillis, Eriogonium grande and Frangula californica are all suited for a future of higher temperatures and lower rainfall.

It’s a big story to tell on a small site. But the impact has been transformative. and the new plaza has become a major selling point for the Grower’s Square development.
