B|D Landscape Architects:
B|D Landscape Architects:The urban significance and sensitivity of the site within the Conservation Area demanded a respectful and carefully considered architectural and landscape response. The confined site of approximately is 0.3 Ha is highly constrained, bounded to the west by Parks Road and to the north by University Parks, coupled with the proximity to the location of the existing notable buildings including the Grade I Listed Keble College and Chapel, the Clarendon Laboratory and Martin Wood Lecture Theatre. A mature Blue Atlantic cedar planted in 1880, whilst an amazing opportunity for the site also created a significant constraint.

There were two areas for the brief, one being the site within the science area (Sherrington Quad) being the primary focus for the landscape proposals to create a distinctive and high quality landscape environment; the second being the interface between the Beecroft building site (formerly named CL2), Parks Road and the University Parks, in particular the potential adjustments to the Parks entrance and boundary treatment.
The new physics building would be constructed primarily within the car park area to the front of the Lindemann Building to provide an innovative building for theoretical and experimental physics research. The approach to the landscape design of this important site reflected a shared aspiration to live up to the opportunities presented by the site and its prominent location as the gateway to the Science Area of the University of Oxford.
The aim was to establish the optimum site layout that would create a distinctive and high quality landscape environment for the new Quad that would be of significant value and provide a for the new Physics building that would be visually integrated within its setting and local context.
The landscape should provide opportunities for passive recreation and relaxation, considering security and safety inside and outside the science area campus, and thought was given to ensure comfortable , level access and circulation within and around the new Physics building. The proposal would need to create space for wildlife and visual delight with extensive planting and enhance the setting of the existing Cedar.
The design developed with a strong collaborative approach between the Client, Hawkins\Brown and other associated design disciplines such as structural, mechanical & civil engineering consultants. From the outset B|D proposed the use of high quality & robust materials that references the distinctive Oxford palette of kerbs, pavers, & trees. Linear natural stone planks would provide a simple ‘carpet’ to provide a strong directional emphasis aiding way finding & arrival sequence.Through research, a concept developed based around the simulation of a detection of the Higgs boson was developed. The model was overlayed with the Cedar at the centre to identify potential areas for planting and pedestrian circulation routes. This was developed further to create varying extents of lines of planting, providing a sense of rhythm in the ground plane with plants to hide and reveal as people walk along the pedestrian routes.

The urban floor was shown enriched with specialist lighting, bespoke benches that emerge from the ground plane and seams of bronze that correspond to the architectural vertical fins of the building, creating a holistic and legible space in three dimensions. The interface between the site, Parks Road, Keble Road and University Parks was carefully considered, in particular the potential adjustments to the Park’s entrance and boundary treatment to create a strong pedestrian & visual connection to the Park from Parks Road and University of Oxford Science Area.
