MYP:The Qiantan Leisure Park is located in the core area of the waterfront in Qiantan area, known as the “second Lujiazui” in Shanghai, with an area of about 23,000 square meters. In 2015, relying on the construction of Huangpu riverfront avenue, the park was first constructed as an affiliated greening project. In 2017, with the gradual progress of the construction of the two banks of the Huangpu River, the Qiantan waterfront, as the demonstration section of the east bank of the Huangpu River, took the lead in completing the 2.5-kilometer three-way construction and arranging simple public facilities such as seats and shelters. Due to the relatively incomplete supporting facilities, the Qiantan Leisure Park was not included in the list of parks along the waterfront until 2019.

Unlike Lujiazui financial district, Qiantan area not only has office space, but also residential, commercial, and leisure spaces, which is a vibrant 24-hour complex city area. It gave MYP the first vision: as a leisure park for family entertainment and family interaction, how to create a spatial immersive experience through the integrated design of architecture and landscape, make the scarce green space resources in the city more complete, and create a landmark image for the project. The overall green space system in Qiantan adopts a spatial framework that integrates nature and the city, with green environment and city intertwined and intermingled, and obvious ecological advantages. Also, it gave MYP the second vision: as an important front-end waterfront green space in the Qiantan waterfront, the design hopes to continue the ecological gene of the Qiantan area, create eco-friendly green buildings based on ecology, create ecological, fun, sustainable activity spaces, and create a sustainable life with both poetry and beauty on the basis of nature.

Challenges

The original park had a single function: With the continuous development of Qiantan area, the original single and simple recreational function of the park could no longer meet the needs of the public for high-quality living environment. The construction of Qiantan area has been basically completed. With a large flow of people during evenings and weekends, the existing public event spaces and supporting service facilities are insufficient, making it difficult to meet the needs of the surrounding high-density residential population.

The greening lacks character:Simple plant species in the park and lack of grouping design. The ground cover grows generally, with large areas of exposed soil in some spaces, and the greening standards are low.

Lack of highlights and characteristics: As an important part of the Golden Central Ring and the front-line display of the waterfront in Qiantan, the current landscape design is not enough to reflect the overall position and image of Qiantan area, In addition, the pedestrian system is not well integrated with the connecting footway. There are few distinctive features in the park, which urgently needs to be upgraded.

Playing in Sand Wonderland – The best family destination along the waterfront in Shanghai

The site was formerly a barren bottomland along the Huangpu River, surrounded by scattered villages and farmland. Nearly 20 years’ rapid development has turned the Qiantan area into a 24-hour three-dimensional city, and has also raised higher demands on the function and image of the original green space. The design hopes to maintain the memories of the old river bund in the rapid development of the new city, and make the site an emotional bond connecting nature and urban functional areas. Based on this, MYP proposed the design concept of “Playing in Sand Wonderland”. The river waves ripple the bottomland, forming a flowing foundation, the wind and waves roll up the sand, building a naturally undulating terrain, animals and people act through the nature, sometimes looking far into the distance, sometimes exploring the underground. This is a dreamland inspired by the natural elements of the river beach, and is also the best family destination along the 45-kilometer waterfront in Shanghai.

From “Site” to “Scene”

Traditionally, architecture is the main body of space and has a clear purpose of use. The design takes architecture and landscape as part of the activity space at the same time, blurs the boundary between building and landscape, and forms three landscape areas around three buildings. It shapes multiple scenes of immersive experience with IP, and creates a dream space with distinct themes.

From “Scattering” to “Convergence”

The original site was long and narrow, with three buildings arranged in a straight line, lacking interaction and enclosure between each other, making it difficult to gather popularity. The landscape land was in strip or dot form, with scattered layout, and individual area is small, making it difficult to carry out diverse functions. The buildings and landscape were independent of each other and lacking interaction. The designed buildings are arranged in a clustered layout, with interactions and enclosures between the three buildings, creating a central activity area surrounded by the buildings, gathering popularity. Also, the construction of the building also forms three concentrated green spaces, which is conducive to the creation of themed landscapes and diverse experiences.

Immersive landscape experience

In order to compensate for the lack of public activity spaces around the site, the park is required to integrate parent-child entertainment and family interaction functions. A key driving factor in the design is the connection with history and nature, and providing a sense of free play. Therefore, based on the design concept of “Playing in Sand Wonderland “, the site is divided into three themed zones to meet the various needs of children and families in different ages for activities.

Zone 1. Floating Mudflat: The square surrounded by three buildings in the center, with streamlined pavement and tree pools interspersed to create an outdoor space with open and flexible use. Considering the needs of children in different ages, a characteristic pink beach is designed to create a main attraction of the park.

In the selection of outdoor children’s activity areas, unlike traditional facilities-based children’s parks, MYP prefer to provide parents and children with an attractive activity space based on the unique attributes of the site. For children, simple shapes, open spaces, and bright colors help them perceive and understand, while fantasy, creativity, and interaction naturally occur during play. Hence, the pink beach was created.

Considering the spatial needs of children in different ages, the sand pool is divided into two activity areas for younger and older children. Children in the younger activity area can quietly build sand castles in the small pool, and children in the older activity area can ride on the seesaw, play with the sand shovel. The interaction between children and the space is created.

Considering the comfort of children use and the poor shaping ability of coarse sand, the final design selected 40-60 mesh powder sand and arranged hand washing basins between the two sand pits, allowing children to return home happily after playing.

Zone 2. Sensory Garden: This area is located at the westernmost end of the site, with relatively few people flowing through it compared to the central square. The building 2# will feature a tea bar and catering in the future, making it suitable for setting up a relatively private and quiet landscape function. Large flower borders planted on both sides of the walking path and next to the benches create a semi-private space surrounded by vibrant greenery, allowing users to experience the joy of nature. At the same time, intelligent facility is arranged to create highlight in the park.

The plants are spatially rearranged by combining the original large arbors such as Larch, Sycamore, and Chinese tallow tree, while adding color-leafed arbors based on retaining the original trees as much as possible. The deciduous trees, mainly hackberry, Chinese tallow tree, and Sapindus, are planted to form a color-leaf forest belt. The large arbors of different heights outline a beautiful canopy line, creating a multi-level planting space. Under the original forest belt framework, flower-viewing trees such as cherry blossoms, red plum blossoms, begonias, crape myrtles, and magnolias are planted to enrich seasonal change and show different colors, providing a view of different scenery in all seasons.

Zone 3. Wave Forest: This area is located on the east side of the site, adjacent to Building 3#, surrounding a small number of existing trees. Considering the main business of Building 3# is sports and catering, with strong activity needs, the design retains the existing trees and partially reshapes the original terrain, planting shade-tolerant flowers under the forest to create an undulating grassy slope garden.

A natural green space and a diversified social stage

As a public green space on the Huangpu River located at world-class CBD and facing full-view of Huangpu River scenery, the Qiantan Leisure Park leverages scarce resources and integrates the design of the building and landscape. Based on the original design intention of “Building disappearing in the environment”, the building is integrated with the micro-topography, and the indoor and outdoor space streamlines are integrated, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor space, ground floor and first floor space, artificial and natural environments, creating an eco-friendly green building. For outdoor space, it is hoped to be natural, interesting, and pleasant, without too many artificial facilities, but restoring the natural appearance that should be. In the urban “steel forest”, it creates the most “wild” ecological paradise. The Qiantan Leisure Park has changed the traditional closed, artificial, reproducible, and fixed architectural landscape experience, shaping an open, natural, unique, variable, and integrated parent-child experience comprehensive park that blends into the scene, creating a new hot spot in Qiantan waterfront area, giving it a distinctive personality, and standing out among the 45 kilometers of Huangpu waterfront.

Once the park was opened, it became a trending topic in Shanghai on website, with a large number of citizen’s check-in photos and videos appearing on social media continually. Dissociating from the traditional functions and design techniques of children’s parks, the organization of more three-dimensional, diverse, and inclusive functional spaces attracts people in different ages, in different activity periods, and with different needs to actively participate in the park, greatly solving the problem of single function in the past, and generating new social activities, ultimately creating cheerful social benefits that are shared by all citizens.
