Design Concept
The demonstration area draws inspiration from the Zen Buddhist philosophy of Qingyuan Xingsi’s three realms: ‘Seeing mountains as mountains, seeing mountains not as mountains, seeing mountains again as mountains.’ It employs poetry to create painted scenes, infusing the natural landscape – a journey of listening to sounds, wandering mountains, and seeking Zen – with Zen spirit. As the scenery is explored more deeply, visitors can feel their state of mind shifting in harmony with the changing space.
Drawing upon the Eastern Zen aesthetic of ‘simplicity, plainness, and beauty,’ and embracing the Zen Buddhist principle of ‘unity of self and things,’ the project integrates the artistic essence of Zen into the landscape and daily life. It explores the boundless interplay of Zen with water, pines, stones, and pavilions – listening to the wind whisper through the pines, sitting on stones to contemplate the water, and quietly embracing the universe. This approach returns to the authentic nature of things, revealing a beauty that is unadorned and artless.

I | Unfolding Mountain Gate
The main gate, spanning 62 meters wide and 5 meters high, utilizes stone, a metal roof, and solid wood screens to amplify its visual weight and create layered depth. The structure’s crown incorporates traditional Chinese mortise-and-tenon joinery and formal architectural elements, giving it the appearance of an open scroll from a distance.
At the gate’s center, borrowing from the framing techniques of classical Chinese gardens, a semi-transparent metal mesh curtain serves as canvas, framed by textured gray stone walls on either side. The play of swaying, ethereal light and shadow, together with carefully chosen plantings, provides the ink, creating a poetic landscape painting.
The paving incorporates subtle wan (swastika) motif details at transitions, echoing traditional symbolism. To the left of the entrance water feature, a carefully sculpted Buddhist pine adds a touch of elegance. A black mountain stone, shaped like a traditional black-awning boat, is centrally positioned, evoking the refined Jiangnan aesthetic of bridges over flowing streams. Slate fragments mosaic the pool floor with a koi carp pattern, as if the fish are swimming along a gentle current, passing beneath the bridge and flowing into the rear courtyard.
II | Wandering the Veranda
On one side, flickering shadows play; on the other, an unbounded expanse of verdant growth.
Undulating groundcover evokes the contours of natural landscapes, conveying their spirit through expressive, freehand design. Accented by the graceful form of Chinese tallow trees, the space cultivates an atmosphere of luxurious mystery. In the distance, a black pine extends its branches laterally, its foliage a lush and vibrant green. To the right, rugged rocks rise, accompanied by the gentle murmur of spring water. Movement and stillness interplay, each enhancing the beauty of the other.
The paving features a natural collage of deep mountain granite in varying sizes and specifications. Copper fish-motif tenon joints are inlaid at the granite intersections, while select areas are engraved with stylized sea wave and cloud patterns, emphasizing the exquisite contrast between refinement and rustic simplicity.

III | Tranquil Courtyard Stroll
‘Contemplating water unlocks Zen insight; inhaling fragrance purifies the spirit.’
The water courtyard eschews the intricate density of classical gardens, embracing instead an expansive plane of water. Seated, one can observe the sky reflected in the water’s surface, framed by verdant trees, and perceive the passage of time through the shifting interplay of light and shadow.

IV | Suspended Pavilion Reflection
Upon the rippling water, a pavilion captures the essence of the mountain landscape.
The Zen pavilion floats on the water’s surface, its form reminiscent of a jade seal, while its interior takes the shape of a traditional pavilion. The roof features a classic Chinese ‘人’ (rén – person) gable design. Together with the sales center’s roof, it creates a composition of two staggered peaks, evoking the sensation of being immersed within the mountains, echoing the sentiment: ‘The true face of Mount Lu is lost to view, for I myself am amidst its peaks.’ Thus, it is named ‘Solitary Peak Seal Pavilion.’

V | A Grove of Zen
“The winding path leads to secluded depths, where the Zen retreat lies amidst blossoms and trees.”
Following the stream into the heart of verdant woods, the water murmurs gently, and the path meanders gracefully. Towering, swaying holly trees are artfully arranged on either side. The path is paved with natural stones gathered from deep within the mountains. Beside the stone path lies the ‘Veiled Moon Turning Corridor.’ Passing through the corridor, the vista suddenly opens, and one can proceed across the water to reach the ‘Solitary Peak Seal Pavilion.’

VI | An Acre of Blossoming Fields
“A bamboo screen whispers of a thousand autumns; three mountains, a single stone, and half an acre of fields.”
Against a backdrop of natural wood-toned bamboo fencing, meticulously placed crimson maples and reclining stones intertwine with flowing water, cultivating an atmosphere of Zen-inspired rusticity. Facing this scene, a pond with three miniature mountains is constructed, subtly evoking the grandeur of natural landscapes. At ground level, dark pebbles intermingle with moss, creating a creeping groundcover. Eschewing the use of traditional shrubbery balls, a variety of gracefully spreading shrubs are selected for the middle layer to create a seamless transition. The upper layer is adorned with crimson maples and other small, colorful-leaved trees, weaving together a three-dimensional Chinese painting.

VII | A Gathering of Stone and Moss
To still oneself, and then to observe. To find, within the intervals, a place of liberation.
Using stones to represent mountains, and wood for its refined elegance, two rain chains descend, their waters flowing across the moss-covered stones. With a foundation of wooden fencing, accented by crimson maples and Japanese maples, the artless stones speak of Zen-inspired tranquility.

| Designer’s Statement |
‘Zen’ is never confined to dry landscapes and moss, but rather yields to nature, allowing the space to naturally decay over time, even to be ‘devoured’ by vegetation. Rejecting neatly trimmed lawns and deliberately symmetrical ‘eternal’ landscaping, the space is imbued with the vitality of ‘incompletion.’ Through irregular paths and labyrinthine layouts, the inertia of ‘efficiency above all’ is disrupted. By using native materials and extreme environmental elements to stimulate bodily awareness, one can focus on the present, and experience the here and now.
