Motif Planning & Design Consultants: A garden is a simulacrum of the world. What place other than a garden can one see birth and death, evanescence and immortality? It is a form of living art that evolves along with time. Here, one can see hope, beauty, power and fragility. Plants grow in perpetuity. The cycle of life and death revolves endlessly.
Michel Foucault believed that in contrast to the imperfection of the realworld, the world in the mirror is a utopia, and the mirror through which we approach that utopia is a utopia as well. Beginning in a “garden,” plants may transform in pursuit of different strategies or exist on the land without changing, but human beings evolve over the course of time, as one age follows another. They may disappear due to diseases and wars.
But nature never changes. Heterotopia Garden is a deliberately crafted artificial space (outdoor venue/living space/passage/flow/semi-flow/rest stop), a more perfect, seemingly real “heterotopia.” Throughout this mirrorlike world can be found the traces of human activity, subtly expressing people’s relationships with other people and the world, and an understanding of people living in their world.
The project design reflections on the nature of social gathering during the 2020 pandemic. Pondering the conflict between the human desire to come together on the one hand, and the epidemiological need to maintain separation on the other, the installations attempt to capture the tension between gathering together and remaining apart by creating multiple interconnected but individuated and isolated spaces.
There is an ambiguous and ill-defined distance between each of us, meaning we can’t be exactly 1.5 meters apart. The imbalance caused by the invasion of human space by invisible germs and viruses has forced humans to think about whether the tangible and intangible boundaries that separated nations in the past are real or not.
Heaven, plants, forests, and shadow and light are created inside the flowing plant landscape in an attempt to implicitly indicate the smallest unit of a living environment for human beings. The space surrounded by all plants also reminds us of the origins of human beings. These boundaries that separate us did not exist at first. Although they were mapped out by people a long time ago, they could vanish or become stronger because of a temporary bacterium spread; the flowing plants, on the other hand, lead and construct a fuzzy path that represents our exploration of the unknown.
There are nine chairs in this work, and only ten people may enter at the same time. Three senses — smell, sight, and touch — are the crucial resting spots for creating several resets of the relationship with the surrounding environment, in these relationships, plants do not serve human beings, and the existence of human beings also needs to adapt to the rhythms and gaps revealed through the interaction among plants.
