GM LANDSCAPE:Guangzhou Asian Games City, a new city bearing the glorious memory of the 2010 Asian Games, is undergoing a major ecological and vibrant urban renewal in its core area. In the post-Asian Games era, how to ensure this land transcends its glory days, continues to serve the daily lives of residents, and becomes a vibrant anchor for the regional ecological network is an unavoidable topic in this renovation.
The goal of inheriting the natural and healthy spirit of the Asian Games is to repair and strengthen the waterfront ecosystem, explore the seamless integration of nature, architecture and community, and ultimately create an urban waterfront living room that is accessible to all and shared all the time, full of natural wildness and vitality, injecting lasting vitality into the Asian Games heritage and providing a practical example for the creation of waterfront public spaces in high-density new cities.

Project Overview DESIGN STRATEGY
The Asian Games Park is located at the core island tip of the Asian Games City in Panyu District, Guangzhou. Surrounded by the lake on three sides, it offers unparalleled 270-degree panoramic views. Adjacent to the landmark Asian Games Gymnasium on the southwest side, it seamlessly integrates with the mature urban fabric.
As a gateway to a modern new city integrating residential, commercial, tourist, and leisure facilities, the park meets urgent ecological and public activity needs. Its purpose goes beyond simply serving surrounding residents; it aspires to become an iconic urban public space that connects and engages Guangzhou citizens.
The existing hard revetments not only weaken ecological functions and sever the connection between people and water, but also lead to a lack of waterside spaces. While the waterfront green corridor boasts pristine and wild vegetation, a long-term lack of systematic maintenance and management has left it in a state of disarray, making its ecological landscape value difficult for the public to effectively perceive and utilize. Furthermore, the existing open spaces are limited in function and capacity, making it difficult to meet the growing diverse leisure, exercise, and social needs of the surrounding high-density population and the citizens.
In response to the characteristics of the site and the demands of citizens, the design decided to organize and sort out the overall park space structure based on the existing road net, site, and preserved trees. While building a resilient habitat, it also creates a natural ecological vitality field that is friendly to all ages and shared by all people, making it a core vitality link that sews together the city and nature, and connects history and the future.
Perception and expression under natural community succession
The renovation preserves the trees on the site and reconstructs resting pools to activate the forest space, creating a comfortable all-day living environment for the surrounding indigenous residents, attracting them to spontaneously form diverse Cantonese-style life scenes such as morning exercises, folk art, and markets, transforming ecological protection into a vibrant container that carries the memory of geographical places, and realizing a symbiotic narrative of natural ecology and urban life.
The ecological framework is constructed by creating a landscape base based on naturalistic communities. Distinctive native species are added to the existing vegetation to create a multi-layered space that blends trees, shrubs, and grasses. Tropical plants are incorporated to create a rainforest-like experience, shaping a linear habitat corridor that combines ecological resilience with a sense of wildness.
Reshaping Waterfront Living in Blue-Green Coexistence
Addressing the core issue of predominantly hard revetments and weak water accessibility, the design reconstructs the waterfront loop based on the principles of weakening boundaries and restoring natural resilience. A gentle ecological slope into the water, combined with wetland plants, creates a gentle natural shoreline, restores the water-land ecotone, and creates a low-intervention, high-perception, healing spatial atmosphere, achieving a deep integration of ecological function and humanistic experience.
By enlarging some paths to create flexible spaces and setting up waterfront platforms in areas with wide views, the space’s engagement and aesthetic appeal are greatly enhanced. Wetland vegetation belts are installed along the waterfront, softening the hard boundaries while creating a habitat for aquatic life, achieving a multi-dimensional symbiosis between people, water, and greenery.
The resilient succession of the ecosystem demonstrates the effectiveness of the restoration of blue-green spaces, making the park a living example of enhancing urban biodiversity.
The loop connects multiple waterfront locations, with a landscape bridge connecting the three banks. The updated landscape bridge, inspired by the dynamic lines of the Guangzhou Asian Games logo, features a wavy, hollowed-out texture that enhances the waterfront and evokes the spirit of sports. Adding local trees and recreational facilities, the loop creates a green, slow-moving lifestyle loop, allowing residents to fully enjoy the vibrant waterfront at all times, surrounded by nature.
Construction of an all-ages-friendly waterfront space system
Targeted at the needs of all ages, we incorporate multifunctional activity scenarios. Leveraging the natural landscape, we organically connect the elements to create a vibrant waterfront system, fostering shared values and emotional resonance among people, and continuing the spirit of the Asian Games.
The curved layout of the grass-step theater enhances the focus on the lake view, and accommodates activities for all ages such as citizens’ rest, small gatherings, and sunset viewing, achieving a topological superposition of ecological interface and viewing function.
Drawing on elements from the Guangzhou Asian Games logo, the design is refined into a fluid, curvilinear language, evolving into a generative logic for platforms, pathways, and facilities. This infuses the spirit of the Asian Games into tangible spaces for parent-child and tree-shaded spaces. An open, flexible lawn is incorporated into the core area to support festive gatherings and free activities. Vertical design and barrier-free transportation eliminate height differences, optimizing accessibility and safety.
Translation Practice in the Creation of Place Spirit
Exploring the spirit of the Asian Games, the spatial language is refined from the core imagery of the Asian Games, the “gears of time,” translating the spiritual ring symbolizing growth towards the sun and eternal exploration into a ring within the venue. The dates and cities of past Asian Games are engraved in metal, while the hands depict the history of the Asian Games and the moments of victory of outstanding athletes at the Guangzhou Asian Games. This iconic waterfront landscape, embodying both natural wildness and a contemporary spirit, has become a new name card for the city, carrying collective memory.
Time becomes a readable spatial narrative. The artistic carvings serve as both a frozen commemoration of the Asian Games’ glory and a continuously generated urban memory. This allows historical context, natural growth, and contemporary life to coexist in a symbiotic relationship, creating a spiritual landmark that embodies collective identity.
A central tree stands at the center of the meditation lawn, becoming the visual focal point of the space. The seamless connection to the expansive lake creates a progressive spatial hierarchy, allowing those seated here to naturally gaze toward the water-sky interface. The natural soundscapes of wind, birdsong, and rippling water create a sensory immersion, detached from the hustle and bustle of the city, providing citizens with a space for spiritual healing and quiet contemplation.
The Asian Games Park transforms the city’s waterfront island tip into a sustainable living entity that inspires community cohesion and carries the city’s memories. Its significance not only reshapes the blue-green public space along the waterfront in a densely populated urban area, but also explores sustainable landscape practices in the post-Asian Games era, using nature as a foundation to activate daily public life and strengthening collective identity through cultural symbols.
