DDON: Located in the core area of Huangpu Expo in Shanghai, the project is also an important segment incorporated into the city’s urban renewal and old town renovation. It gathers the glory of the Huangpu River and preserves the memories of the Expo. The Expo Axis brings together the essence of world civilizations within its space, while the memories of Huangpu bear witness to the city’s ongoing transformation. With the artistic elegance of Shanghai-style culture and a modern, trendsetting attitude, the project seamlessly integrates nature into everyday life. It creates a symbiotic realm that combines the forms of rivers, streams, and islands with the texture of modern art and the ethereal charm of nature—allowing art to transcend beyond mere “landscape” and truly immerse into “life,” quietly exploring the traces of art in the present.
Greentown · Huangpu ONE is situated at No. 986, Longhua East Road, Huangpu District, on a former site of the Shanghai World Expo. With the deepening of urban renewal, the surrounding area has gradually developed a fashionable, diverse, vibrant, and open artistic atmosphere. As a significant practice in urban renewal, this project is dedicated to inheriting the historical context while injecting contemporary vitality. We have thoroughly examined the site’s historical脉络, preserved carriers of memory, and ensured that every design element responds to the layers of the city’s development. Through strategies such as integrating art spaces, reshaping the pedestrian experience, and optimizing the ecological foundation, the transformation of the old district has been turned into a sustainable and warm organic renewal process, achieving both functional and aesthetic enhancement of the area.
Taking this urban renewal project as an opportunity, we have chosen to align with the district’s atmosphere and adopt the concept of an “Outdoor Aesthetic Living Room.” Here, historical heritage and contemporary ideals organically merge, jointly shaping a new public space brimming with vitality and artistic ambiance, while reinventing warm and connected community life. The uniqueness of the site presents numerous specific challenges, which are crucial to our approach in creating the Outdoor Aesthetic Living Room:
How can landscape planning be implemented within a limited site to create an artistic living room facing the city? How can intangible art be integrated into daily life to establish new artistic community relationships? How can original historical memories be preserved during the renewal process, while achieving sustainable ecological development with minimal intervention? These questions have become central to the focus and resolution of this renewal project.
Urban Art Performance Venue: Reconstructing Boundaries, Connecting Symbiosis
We have reshaped the ambiance of the site through a curatorial approach to art, breaking traditional spatial boundaries. A super mirror water surface, the Visconti White scenic wall, and oil olive trees with a distinct oil painting charm together create an open and ritualistic artistic entrance. The artist’s sculpture “Mountain & Sea · Golden Palace” stands quietly at the center of the water feature, engaging in a dialogue with the rhythmically modern aesthetic pavilion architecture. This establishes a visual connection between the city and the art gallery, crafting an immersive performance scene that balances openness and artistry. Here, it is not only an artistic living room facing the city but also a never-ending public art event.
Boundary-less Aesthetic Experience: Art Integrates into Life, Life Becomes the Scenery
Art transforms from passive observation into a tangible and interactive experience, blending into every corner of the space. The native fir forest in front of the aesthetics pavilion becomes a natural exhibition corridor where art and nature intertwine. Art installations, tranquil water surfaces, and platform seating appear to organically emerge from the environment, softly dissolving the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, exhibits and surroundings. The Floating Wood Tea Island and mirrored water feature form a social axis for both rest and interaction.
Light cascades down, casting a glaze-like clarity upon the water surface, where the silhouette of the art and aesthetics pavilion is reflected in ethereal tranquility. The gentle murmur of cascading water and the soft whispers of the breeze accompany the scene. The yellow-tinged limestone rocks arranged along the water’s edge resemble cherished art pieces, with a warm glow seemingly emanating from their crevices. The custom-designed sculpture “Eight-Pointed Star” by the artist adorns the gentle grassy slopes, endowing the art with readability and tangibility. Here, art is not merely observed—it becomes a part of citizens’ daily lives, seamlessly blending into their routines of strolls, dates, and moments of respite, achieving a harmonious fusion of art and urban living.
Let Nature Thrive Freely: Low-Intervention, Ecological, and Sustainable Landscape
We have preserved the original dawn redwood forest to the greatest extent, applying only ecological remediation and pathway guidance to transform the once dense woodland into a green living room accessible and functional for citizens. The Cedar Forest Theater, leveraging micro-topography and Bai Po Yellow gravel, reshapes the site’s relationships through minimal-intervention geospatial techniques. Self-sustaining plant communities were selected to reduce long-term manual maintenance. Ecological zones such as the xerophyte garden and open woodland grassy mounds evolve autonomously over time, revealing another form of artistic expression through natural growth—nature itself is the most captivating exhibition.
Craftsmanship: Overcoming Implementation Challenges
With a tight project timeline, we successfully addressed several technical difficulties during construction:The precise hoisting and placement of large scenic rocks (the largest measuring 2.5m × 4.5m) and their seamless integration with the water feature demanded extremely high standards in both rock-cutting techniques and on-site execution.
Every piece of stone used in the on-site Bai Po Yellow weathered stone platform underwent dry-laid mockups, custom-cutting according to design specifications, and numbering before being manually laid in place to ensure perfect realization of the intended design effect. Overcoming these technical challenges reflects our unwavering commitment to quality and profound respect for artistic integrity.
The entire site, as an extension of the urban art gallery, is not only a landmark public space within Huangpu’s urban renewal but also a social experiment that blends art, ecology, and daily life into a harmonious whole.
In terms of the landscape design framework, the historical character and original texture of the site were respected. On one hand, the native dawn redwood forest was preserved to the greatest extent and ecologically rehabilitated, maintaining the sense of belonging and identity of the place. On the other hand, through modern and minimalist artistic approaches, the clever use of textured stone walls and oil-painting-like vegetation introduced a sensory experience. The incorporation of reflective water features, soft paving, lighting, and collaborations with artists to integrate artworks further deepened the fusion of nature and art. The goal was to create an urban public aesthetic space that embodies vitality, artistry, and natural qualities, ultimately reinventing warm and connected community life. We envision this not merely as a landscape, but as a continuously evolving outdoor art scene where everyone can encounter art and coexist with nature.
As Matisse once said, “Art is not decoration, but a dialogue with the world.” Here, everyday life resonates with the symbiosis of art.
