Not A Studio: It is inevitable that all things hidden must be found. Unfortunately, this process often marks the start of a transformation where all original charm is lost, succumbing to conventional modernization. Bingzhongluo today is in this gradual process, trying to find its place in a rapidly modernizing society but not knowing where to begin. We created a space there, hoping to let a little light shine into this unstoppable trend of change. Rural construction is not just about building villages.
Bingzhongluo,Introduction to Ding Mama
In 2004, the first shot of the poetic documentary “Drum” by director Tian Zhuangzhuang was a distant view of Bingzhongluo. Shrouded in clouds, Bingzhongluo appeared like a fairyland to those unfamilar. As Tian Zhuangzhuang said:“The people living here, like the mountains on the plateau, are humble and proud, full of legendary colors, coexisting harmoniously with nature. We outsiders can only look up to them, appreciate and admire them. This place gives you strength, peace, and inner joy. They will not change themselves to garner our praise.”
In this powerful, mysterious, and beautiful land, more than ten ethnic minorities such as the Nu, Lisu, Tibetan, and Dulong have lived for generations. This multi-ethnic coexistence allows for diversity of thought and free expression of religion. It is here religions such as Christianity, Catholicism, and Tibetan Buddhism gracefully coincide. The people of Bingzhongluo express their faith and love in different languages with primitive purity.
A Homestay is More Than Just a Short Stay ,It’s a Home on the Road
“Ding Mama’s House” was the first homestay in Bingzhongluo. As the country opened up in the 1990s, backpackers stumbled upon Bingzhongluo and met the sheltered Ding Mama by chance. Ding Mama, whose Han name is Yu Xiulan, is Tibetan. Known for her enthusiasm in guiding travelers and sometimes inviting them home for tea and rest — she became affectionately known as “Ding Mama”. With word of mouth spreading, Ding Mama’s house welcomed more and more guests.
When we first arrived in 2022, 82-year-old Ding Mama remained simple and warm-hearted. However, her home and courtyard had become weathered and old. The rainy climate of Yunnan led to leaks, dampness, and tilting walls, making the home that had once hosted countless travelers unable to shelter them from wind and rain.
Overall Renovation Description
During preliminary visits, we found that the terrain of Ding Mama’s house had significant elevation differences. This presented an opportunity to create vertical distinctions within the architectural components, harmonizing them with the natural landscape. The terrain also provided an opportunity to seamlessly blend the old houses with the new. To connect the various functional areas, we incorporated open pathways, transforming the walls and corridors with a winding route through the rolling hills of Bingzhngluo.
Architecture is a vessel to enhance and bring attention to nature and the surrounding mountains. We sourced local materials for the exterior and landscape retaining walls, expressing reverence for the mountains. The mountains of Bingzhongluo present another unique opportunity to utilize local materials. A distinctive feature of the mountains is their surface — though untouched, they appear so smooth, one would assume it had been polished. By using stone to construct walls, the distinctive texture enhances the local character, dissolving the distance between modern architecture and nature.
A triangular sloped roof was added to the main building, resolving height differences between the entrance and internal structures. The glass curtain wall at the top, paired with large-span steel structures, allows natural light to enter, opening a dialogue between the occupants and the light shining in. Inside, a circular dome leads to the sky.
The Pyramid
In Tibetan culture, circles symbolize rituals and reflect reverence for the sun. As the sun rises, beams of light pierce through the clouds and enter through the dome, setting the tone and spirit of the space. As the day passes, the natural movement of the sun around the sky presents a pure spectacle of nature which can all be observed through the dome.
A reflecting pool in front of the main building mirrors the sky, creating symmetrical compositions that appear pure and serene against the mountainous backdrop.
The first floor of the main building houses a multifunctional resting area called “Xie,”. Xie is a transitional space that blends the cool natural exterior with the warm hospitable interior and invites people to experience the peaceful coexistence of two worlds. In the exterior part of Xie, near the reflecting pool, lounge chairs are tucked away in an unassuming quiet corner. The space fosters serenity and calmness.
In the interior portion of Xie, we preserved the entirety of one of the original walls of the building. Furthermore, we used recycled furniture and fabrics from locals to create an immersive blend of historic influences with the renovated space.
Guest Rooms 、Hostel 、 Dining
Ding Mama’s guesthouse is the only new building in the complex. The site was previously scattered terraces, and we catered our design to adapt to the terrain, ensuring connectivity with the hostel’s main hall. Backed by mountains, all rooms offer views of the snow-capped Gawa Gap mountain.
The ever-changing clouds and mist bring dynamic, framed views of the mountain into the space, inspiring anticipation.
Structural elements become artistic expressions as light and shadow interplay, creating a powerful geometric sequence. The hostel spaces cater to both private stays and short-term, interactive accommodations for young travelers. Shared reading and relaxation areas connect the units, blending interior and exterior scenery. The units feature large open windows inviting the sky and the mountains to infuse with the residents.
The dining area highlights local culture, with yellow hues representing the land in Tibet. The textured walls preserve authenticity, and diverse furniture breaks monotony, extending views to the mountains and enhancing immersion.
Tyndall Hall
Ding Mama’s house stands near Chongding Church in the village center. As a Catholic, Ding Mama holds the key to the church, and she often sings Tibetan hymns there.
Inspired by the Tyndall effect, from the very start of our renovations we envisioned a spiritual space for Ding Mama, Tyndall Hall where light represents a divine presence.
Tyndall Hall is accessible for non-religious purposes as well and can serve as a space of quiet reflection as light filters through colored glass, dynamically shaping the space. When Ding Mama sings hymns in Tyndall Hall, the energy between people and architecture touches the soul.
The Fire Pit,Time and Memory
In the past, whenever travelers came by, Ding Mama would invite them to sit by the fire pit, drink tea, corn wine, and chat. The renovated fire pit retains its original structure, preserving the smoke-stained beams and memories. The fairly untouched space invokes a feeling of nostalgia and of its previous life.
The open area by the fire pit, where a bonfire lights up at dusk, invites interaction in this wild yet warm space.
Preserved Trees,Reverence fills the space with spiritual faith
Most of the trees within the site were preserved. They may not have any meaning or represent anything, yet like Ding Mama’s hymns, they can still greatly influence their surroundings. An old tree growing from a basin within the terrain and encircled by a bridge lies coincident with the main building. When the fog settles between the mountains, it poetically frames the old tree and the buildings against the mountainous backdrop of Bingzhongluo. This scene raises a call for inner reflection and tranquility in the viewer.
结语
Conclusion
“If beauty had a color, you will see it here”, this is the slogan used by Bingzhongluo locals. However, we want to paraphrase this and say, “if light can be seen, you will see it here”.
